Words to live by, "One of the bravest men that I ever saw was a fellow on top of a telegraph pole in the midst of a furious fire fight in Tunisia. I stopped and asked what the hell he was doing up there at a time like that. He answered, "Fixing the wire, Sir". I asked, "Isn't that a little unhealthy right about now?" He answered, "Yes Sir, but the Goddamned wire has to be fixed". I asked, "Don't those planes strafing the road bother you?" And he answered, "No, Sir, but you sure as hell do!" Now, there was a real man. A real soldier. There was a man who devoted all he had to his duty, no matter how seemingly insignificant his duty might appear at the time, no matter how great the odds."

That was a magnificent read, sir. Patton was such an incredible character. No writer in the history of man could have come up with a better military character. So pure, so unapologetic, with such genuine unabashed bravado that ONLY he could ever pull off, because that kind of spirit was his ENTIRE essence. He was born to lead men into combat.

Absolutely sharpen the shovels! That was what I got my wife for the first Valentine's Day we were together: an E-tool which I then took a silver Sharpie and drew little hearts all over the blade and wrote "I dig you." Be ready and be FEROCIOUS. Also, you know what's even better than sharpening your knife? Making your own from a solid piece of steel and THEN sharpening it. Seeing that edge form from a straight flat line into a scalpel sharp tool in the size and shape that your mind wills it to be is like you said zen like and soul cleansing, and when you're creating one you breathe life into it, making a living spirit frozen into steel.

I listened to this last night at work & had to listen to General Patton's speech again as I found it quiet inspiring in its raw way, I'm British & we to are cut from the same cloth as we have been fighting for 1000 years, what he says is right, mankind is naturally violent, it's who we are, the West tend to be more hand to hand combat (the viking in us) as the east tend to throw spears & arrows (shout & dance to get them self's ready to fight) as the west is always ready without to much encouragement, it sounds mad but it's in our dna. It's probably why it took so long and using all the west might to beat the Germans as they to are a hand to hand fighting nation, the vikings blood line runs deep

My understanding is Patton used Farm Boys to drive his tanks. Back then when a tractor or plow broke down in the middle of a field, they were on their own to figure out out to fix it. Which makes them perfect for tank crews. Tank breaks down in the middle of nowhere France, they had the mechanical skills and farm ingenuity to fix it on the fly. Not sure if this is true or not. Can anyone confirm?
