Basic disassembly of a Dell Inspiron 17-5000 is as simple as removing the bottom plastic shell. Unscrew all the bottom screws and carefully use a pry tool to pop the plastic clips around the edges. Once removed, you'll have access to most of the internals and can do most upgrades and repairs quite easily. The SATA hard drive or SSD, NVMe SSD slot, RAM slots, CPU fan and heatsink, battery, and motherboard are all easy to work on once you're in. The backlit keyboard is under the motherboard and is probably a pain to replace; I don't disassemble that far because I'm only opening it to upgrade to a SATA SSD.
One of these laptops with an i5 or i7 and backlit keyboard will run you around $650; if you do the SSD upgrade yourself, you'll have a really sweet $700 17-inch laptop.

I finally decided to open mine up. I'm waiting on the m.2 nvme 500G drive now. I opened it first to verify that it has an m.2 slot. I taped the screws in their holes to keep track of exactly where they went (a few are captive by the hinge). I used a polycarbonate scraper for cast iron skillets as my pry tool. It worked great. I just slid it down the sides and across the bottom and a couple at the hinge. The bottom came off easily. Hope it goes back together as easily!

I know this is old, but Dell 17 5000 is one of the best performing machines I ever had. Especially the touchpad, it's super responsive and precise with best gestures support. And otherwise snappy as if it's much more expensive machine. It also keeps low CPU temp. It came with 128 Gb SSD + 1 TB HD, but only 8 gigs of memory, and now I see I can expand that myself. Thanks!

@@MrGoddlie Indeed, it seems like just a bunch of screws to remove and then it's pretty easy access to memory slots. What issues do you have with battery? Mine is still in "excellent condition" after few years. But I did take some precautions, like downloading Dell's neat little tool for keeping the charge at custom percentage (like 50%) when plugged in.

Thank you for the video, it is very informative. I have an Inspiron 17 5767 that I'd like to swap the hdd as well. I've worked on desktops in the past, do you have to worry about grounding yourself? I didn't think that it was safe to use anything magnetic around computers.
@JodyBruchon
@JodyBruchon 4 жыл бұрын
In general, the whole grounding of yourself is not really necessary these days. If you have concerns, touch any bare metal on the case before touching a potentially sensitive part. Magnetic stuff doesn't really affect computers unless you put a VERY powerful magnet on a magnetic hard drive. I have run a computer shop for over a decade and I never ever use a ground strap. Every chip made in the past 20 years or so has circuitry on all the pins that hardens them against static electricity. The static problem was mainly a problem on early CMOS parts.

Do you have to disconnect battery before removing internal screws and adding the SSD? I’ve done it both ways without incident but it always frightens me. Some are just a simple ribbon cable, some are more complex. Noticed your comment about grounding being more obsolete on newer aged machines and curious for your insight

I don't know, but you can look up "Dell Inspiron 17-5000 upgrades" and find plenty of machine-specific resources for that. Crucial offers an upgrade service that tells you what memory and drive type your computer can take, plus the maximum RAM you can reliably install. I don't have this computer anymore; it was a customer machine and I haven't seen it in years.

Dell D600 battery (C1295) With a jumper between Ground and the SYS PRESENT pin I can measure voltage and discharge the battery using a R/C charger /discharger. However I can not charge at the out most pins. No current flow goes into the battery. If I put the battery back in the laptop it will charge it full again. Would you know if I need another jumper to allow the battery to accept charging?

All my previous Dell laptops, back to pentium 2, keyboards were easy, 5 minute swaps when they failed. Not this backlit 17-5770 i-8, 8th gen. I tried and the damn thing is spot welded into the top frame, so you have to field strip everything and reinstall them to a new frame. Don't waste your time attempting to unweld/reweld a new keyboard at home. & good luck finding a new top frame with keyboard. I have 2 "new" + 1 refurbished ones that didn't work. #4 was a 'as new' US English pull from Lithuania exchanged for a different language keyboard/frame. It was down for some 10 weeks as I replaced or waited for the next new or refurb to arrive. IN the end I decided the mobo keyboard socket had poor clamping or connection. This black Lithuanian keyboard looked the same as the silver 5770 i-7 8th gen, but was stickered as "COREi-5, 10th GEN" and it's keyboard ribbon looked thicker and so it clamped tighter into the mobo socket. I have been loyal to Dell, but all this has turned me off to Dell. Yeah I know, they all come from China now. It's working great again & yeah I had already swapped/cloned a 256GB SSD for the 128GB & found another stick of matching numbers 16GB RAM = 32GB + new Intel blutooth 5.1 wifi card. Do you have a preferred laptop brand over Dell as far as serviceability? *Thank you* for your videos.

A spudger or pry tool. Commonly found in a six-piece kit, sometimes called a "clay modeling" kit. Should be easy to find on eBay. It's soft metal with no pointy corners so it won't damage things quite as easily as things like flat screwdrivers.

@@Elkins24 it's very likely the fan is worn out. Test by spinning it with your finger or a blow. It should spin freely and for a little while without vibration or noise. If the bearing is worn out then you'll feel a vibration or hear a buzz or him from it when it spins. It's rare that a fan failure is something jamming it.

Like your video but why didn't you just put an m.2 drive in? A few extra bucks saves a lot of trouble. Once you clone to the m.2 you can then replace the HD with an ssd and the old drive will be a system backup. Did I miss you using a pry tool to remove the cover? To me that is the potentially the hardest part.
@JodyBruchon
@JodyBruchon 4 жыл бұрын
M.2 SSDs cost more than SATA SSDs. I was doing this for a customer who doesn't care either way. If it was for me, I might do things differently. Most laptops have to pried apart these days, so I definitely used a pry tool. The problem most have with the pry tool is thinking that they're supposed to be prying the bottom plastic away from the top plate, but what they should be doing is pushing inward on the top plate to release its hidden clips. It's a slightly different hand movement that is much more effective and less damaging.

The hard drive that comes with most computers is a mechanical drive. It has mechanical delays when accessed that make it much slower than memory chips. A solid-state drive is literally just a bunch of flash memory chips with no moving parts, meaning that they're massively quicker than a mechanical hard drive, but usually lower in capacity for the same cost. It's also a lot easier and cheaper to get laptop hard drive sized SSDs than M.2 slot SSDs, and any laptop currently sporting a hard drive is guaranteed to work with a 2.5-inch SATA SSD.
