All of them were servicemen (Marines and an Airman) returning home while on leave, and I guess it was common for younger people in the service to hitchhike in those days. None of them actually sat with Eisenhower. The motorcade picked them up and they rode in an adjacent car on the way to their destination.

But he's also a damn good dipper, he's dipped out of more american bars and restaurants than any other hitchhiker in american history. Why, one time I heard he went to a hooters, got away with eating 60 dollars worth of buffalo wings and beer, and then dipped saying he 'needed to get his wallet out of his car'. Fun fact, Joe Biden doesn't drive his car when he's hitching, but he still got away with it - though now he's banned from 30 franchise locations. No worries though, he'll still manage.
