One of my teachers studied with Joe. He told me Joe talked a lot about painting as an analogy for how he thought about improvisation - melody as brush strokes and harmony as color. I hear it when I listen to his playing.

This album is one of my all time favorites. The whole record is great-everyone is playing brilliantly. I'll bet I've listened to it 500 times. "Joshua" is a gold mine of ideas-one of my personal faves is at about bar 17 of Mr. Henderson's first chorus. He steps out of the tonality in a really unique way-took me a minute to peel it! Thanks, Bob. Not only are you a great musician, you're an outstanding teacher. What a gift!

This link is uncannily strong. I remember getting into Radiohead before I went to college, and then falling full-bloom in love with Joe once I got there, and you can find so many harmonic parallels between Joe's playing and writing and Radiohead's. It felt so natural to join them which has hugely influenced my own musical concept

Thanks for these kinds of videos! Seeing the work and love that goes into improving as a player makes it less mysterious and feel possible! (Although I'm a piano player, I still get so much out of your vids!)

I’m now incorporating this in my practice, but I use an external Bluetooth speaker. It’s cool that this is how I started 40 years ago with a record player and now it’s the method that still works for me. Thanks, Bob!

It’s interesting when you mentioned trying to sound like Joe Henderson to listen Joe Henderson, and also play along with a lot of his recordings. Or with anyone for that matter. I’ve done that with various players I’ve tried to focus on or draw inspiration from, but while paying attention to details on how they accent or phrase lines, or just getting a feel of the overall mood and atmosphere of whatever tune they are playing. Overtime I’ve noticed that it’s made me naturally adjust my embouchure, adjusted airflow and articulation to resemble what said player is doing. (For example, a player I’ve been trying to do this with has been Johnny Griffin).

I remember taking a lesson with Bob Sheppard last fall and he told me that I should be doing essentially what you described every day. Patrick Bartley also does a similar thing with J-Music songs on his streams. It’s a really cool concept that I’ve had a ton of fun exploring.

I feel euphoric just thinking about Joe’s ‘So Near, So Far’ and ‘Lush Life’ along with ‘State of the Tenor Vol 1 & 2’ recordings! Radiohead is a group I know little about, but have been meaning to check out for years. Thanks for making that connection! Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Branford, Jeff Coffin? Couldn’t you find any good players for your retreat? ;^)

When I was a student at DePaul, our jazz combo class went into the recording studio in December, in Chicago. Weather and traffic caused me to be literally on time for the recording session to start. I was out of sorts to put it mildly. When the Cd came out, I didn't want to listen to it. The teacher said, "listen to it! You sound like Joe Henderson". Which is odd because I was into Dexter, Sonny and Stan at the time.

Bob I would sell them within the studio at a discount price. The group loves your teaching and more specifically you. Give them something back to show your appreciation for them

Bob, I think the bass is playing F. So, yes, you hear "your" C major, which translates to Bb major in concert pitch, which means that this low F makes the mode F-mixolydian. And this means that Joe is actually playing some envelope around mixolydian characteristic tone, the b7 (Es is b7 of F major). Am I wrong?

"How do I sound more like Joe Henderson?" Which era? And, why not study that progression from his debut recordings in the '60s to his more political and avant garde stuff in the early '70s to his "resurgence" on State of the Tenor, to the songbooks of the '90s? It's such an amazing artistic arc!
