Joe Madden is a genius. His take on the game becoming all about “me” and the hell with the team is smack on target. He laments the demise of town teams, Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, and the Pony Leagues, which again, is spot on. Madden has been the catalyst for the success of every team he has managed. That is gravitas. The game needs many more people like MR Madden to draw it away from the total bullshit of analytics.

John Smoltz made a good point when he was interviewed recently. If pitchers keep trying to throw harder, and putting more stress on their wrists, elbows, and shoulders, then it doesn't matter how many pitches these guys pitch. They will still run the risk of getting injured. Pitchers need to pitch smarter, not harder. They are putting way too much stress on their arms by continuing to increase their velocity.

I suppose…but his generation was such a benefactor of ridiculous strike zones. It would be really interesting to see how those Braves pitchers would do if they had to actually throw the ball in the strike zone to modern hitters

Joe totally gets what being a good teammate is all about. The showcase ME concept is not what sports was ever meant to be. I agree with Joe on the over emphasis of analytics. They were designed to be useful tools not the be all and end all. You are still dealing with people who get the job done with their own talents. I disagree on Robo balls and strikes. Umps generally are weak on the outside and the bottom of the zone. And you have catchers who are very good at tricking the eye. It's too hard. Give the Robos a try. If it doesn't work, change it.

Pitchers need to learn how to pitch. How to be deceptive. Think Greg Maddox. As for the strike zone, Nonproblem with the ump calling balls and strikes. However, they should be backed up by tech, and teams should have 3 challenges a game.
@baosommurr4566
@baosommurr4566 8 күн бұрын
If Maddox is pitching rn, he'll have an era of 9. Not surprising most top pitcher today all throw gas... A 92mph fastball in today game just wouldn't work. Hitter bat speed is in whole another lvl where if you ain't touching 96 or with movement, that ball is getting torch. Is a risk and reward for the player and for the team. Look at the Ray's, is not a coincidence why they lose half the starters to TJ each season
@danr154

I dont think hed have an era of 9 but I do believe he would be worse because he couldnt manipulate umpires or the strike zone the way he used to. Of course a 92 mph sinker is more effective 3 or 4 inches off the plate.

I’m no longer a baseball fan. I changed to only NL in the early 70s. The DH ruined baseball. Took away double switches, pitching around the #8 hitter, and the joy of a pitcher getting a hit. MLB needs to take advantage of technology with calling balls/strikes. With more movement and speed on pitches umpires can’t keep up. I’ve seen too many blown calls change outcomes of games. At a minimum there should be challenges.

I can't criticize free agency, because players should make as much as they can. But at the same free agency has destroyed that loyalty between players and fans today. There aren't anymore Tony Gwens' in sports anymore. I think looking out for out one self has some merit, but I feel the fans are still losing out.

ehh you're being a tad dramatic. The minor leage abs challenge system is way further along than you think. Ever watch a tennis match? Ever seen them challenge whether a serve hits the line? It is literally that system. Its fast and gets the crowd involved and no one sots there and shames the ump. Everyone gets it that it was hard to see. Its really a nice system and works perfectly for balls and strikes. Player taps the top of their head, they immediately put the path of the ball across the zone on the big screen so everyone can see. The call is supported or reversed. The count is changed. It literally takes seconds.
