Plus Joe played in an era when defenders could leave their feet, launch themselves and lead with their helmets to make a tackle. If a defender looks at Brady the wrong way, he gets a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty. Joe broke his back and won two more superbowls.

Joe is the best in my opinion because he played in a tougher era. The defense was way tougher back then. The game was more physical. He and MJ excelled when people were able to really lay their bodies on you. GOATS.

@@frettin1706 You nailed it. When Joe played, football was a tougher game. I get so tired of hearing Tom Brady is the best. He gets coddled, he cheats, and he could not take the hits Joe did. Joe is Four for Four. Brady cannot say that. And with all the trash-talking about Eli, he beat Brady TWICE in two Super Bowls. A quote from Joe on a DP show. "I do not know how it feels to lose a Super Bowl, so I cannot answer that question." There it is, Brady.

I don't get how one can dismiss the 2 super bowl losses. Somehow not even going to the SB is better than going and losing? Of course, that was then. Now you rationalize 4-0 (3x MVP) is better than 6-3 (4x MVP).

Joe earned his rings unlike someone. Unfortunately the league has ruined the game for a lot of people with super bowls having the significance of a participation trophy. I can't take the nfl seriously. I haven't for at least ten years. How anyone can anymore is ignorance on their part. It's rigged entertainment now and not worth following. And it's blantely obvious. Btw, that #12 is not even in the top 40 QB's of all time. The next legitimate sb he wins will be the first.

My dad graduated from ND in the mid 1950s and we we grew up ND fans. I remember Joe's senior year at ND and the Cotton Bowl comeback. I also saw him play at ND vs S. Carolina where he hit Ken McAfee (TE) for a game winner. As a Packer fan, I never cheered for SF, but always loved the guy and am glad for his success in the 80s and early 90s. He and Rice were nothing short of genuine awesomnosity (*new word alert*). Good on ya Joe and thanks for the memories for football fans everywhere.

+Sideshow Bob Brady was a game manager for three of those Super Bowls, the AFC is a joke, just about everyone agrees he always has the easiest road to the super bowl. Joe had a total qbr in those supe bowls of 127.4 compared to Brady's 92. Brady only played in one super bowl where he had a better passer rating than the opposing Quarterback. If Joe played in today's league he wouldn't have had to get multiple surges and deal with multiple concussions. The league is watered down. Plus who in the world has a throw away sell phone with the equipment manager and then destroys all of the evidence when the NFL starts to investigate you. Oh yeah it's tom shady.

Dan Patrick doesn't tip pizza guy well..Way to go..I think I heard Montana was coached by Bill Walsh to throw in a very specific way to make the ball more catchable. I always thought that simply means, he made sure not to throw it too hard OR also that he typically threw with a higher trajectory: kinda dropping it in a basket. Lately though, when I watch the old highlights, looks like he purposefully threw with less spin on the ball (presumably, also making his ball more catchable). Anybody out there have insights or know the full story on this?

Rick Dynes I read that Sam Wyche said that when he was coaching qbs with SF that they got to the point that they just made up stuff to tell Joe because he was so good. Joe would complete a pass in practice and they would say "Joe, if you would hit him on the left number he could get 5 more yards." And the next pass would hit the receiver on the left number according to Wyche.

Montana played kinda a point guard style Quarterback. He wasn't known for having a rocket arm. That soft ball that he threw looked natural to me. How fast did they run in the combine?, how much could they bench, how agile were they, when you look at the metrics you see that the guys now on average are what the best guys were back in Montana's day and they now can watch fully dissected video on all the offences, yeah ok so a lot of the guys were as big but not as fast, and yes they don't want the QB's to get hurt, but they still get hit just because there's a rule saying ruffing the passer doesn't mean Brady doesn't get hit and then the penalty is given. If you want to go back before Montana then yeah ok i'll give you that when guys like night train could legally grab your helmet and try to break your neck. the offence could also hold defenders.
