@ddg-fi5bp4 жыл бұрын
Why do I remember he said rubber guard lacked mobility so they don’t do rubber guard. And I doubt that Gordon thinks it’s the best guard because he never used it in competition. What he does prefer is toplock. But, Gordon in general definitely prefers open guard because he can get inside position to set up leg attacks and sweeps.

I honestly don't know jack shit about the rubber guard except 3 things... I see KZfaq commercials for it all the time, this JRE clip smells like an infomercial for it... and I'm sold... it sincerely seems legit. I also know that I'm currently homeless and it's gonna take years to fix that (my situation is a mess)... and thus I can't afford classes or even an instructional videos subscription, so I will not have a way to learn it unless some miracle happens like someone approaching me in the park and offering to teach me or me finding a winning loto ticket (I'd have to find it cuz I don't play) or something unbelievably amazing like that... otherwise my opportunity is at least 3 years out. That being said, I'mma check it out at some point. Maybe there's a slim chance I can find a few decent videos about it here on KZfaq, and a willing and competent training partner at the shelter ... I don't need them to know what they're doing, just be not drugged out, at least simi-bathed, and intelligent enough to hold a conversation without coming off like they didn't make it to high school... also reasonably physically fit and flexible. Seems a tall order for our shelter but not outside the realm of plausibility. It's a long shot, but I do get stuck with a lot of time that simply doesn't have a way to use it to get myself outta my situation... this can be an alternate form of productivity/self improvement to apply when I'm stuck waiting on things for my primary goal of reclaiming my independence. Like I say though ... a long shot. I'll probably just end up just maintaining my current training level for now.

The rubber guard is great, but you have the risk of instance KO. You let them slam you on the back of your head, and you’re screwed. If your opponents powerful enough you don’t have a choice. Happened a few times in UFC/MMA fights (Rampage Jackson perhaps probably most famously), just seeing it makes me scared to do it to anyone.
@Plaster10p4 жыл бұрын
trying to hold ANY guard against a guy who is trying to slam is stupid. even a fully cinched triangle or arm bar from the bottom can be slammed. your example is flawed sir.
@babyyoda40524 жыл бұрын
Michael Plaster what other guard puts you at that great of risk of getting slammed on the back of your head? They can’t slam you in open and half guards, and in the rest of the closed guard series your head is better protected against a slam. With a rubber guard if your opponent is able to stand up, which if they have any size on you, you’re in trouble. Even if it’s a competition fight, if you have a powerhouse opponent you could be in a world of hurt for it. Just as you fix their body position, if they lock back up you’re fixed too. The reason I would submit rubber guard as greatest risk is because you are the highest, most locked, and most centered in relation to all other guards. On top of that, it’s hard to let go that quickly, protect your head, and/or not give up position. All I’m saying is the rubber guard puts you at the greatest risk of it. A stand up slam is a difficult countermeasure that seems very effective to me that makes me wary of the guard myself. But give me one example of someone getting slammed out of a different type of guard onto their head for a KO (I am not aware of any in MMA/UFC), and I’ll digress, or even any way out of the aforementioned position or a defense where you don’t lose ground. Lastly, triangle and armbar from bottom are so much easier to recover and protect from upon release than the rubber guard- how is that a fair example? Additionally, I would say it’s stupid, I know of at least one fight one from an armbar on bottom when the opponent was trying to slam.
