FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt reveals 10 games that will shape the upcoming season. He begins with a couple early-season non-conference games that will give either the Big Ten or SEC an early edge in the battle for extra spots in the 12-team Playoff. Klatt also considers the potential ramifications when Coach Prime takes on Matt Rhule and Nebraska in September. Along with non-conference games, there are powerhouse matchups in the SEC like Kalen DeBoer’s first meeting with Kirby Smart and Georgia’s trip to Austin. He also lays out an under-the-radar SEC team that is set up to potentially sneak into the Conference Championship Game. They just lost way too much to be at that level again this year will be a letdown but they could be right back next year. @@jmbspeech6726 The difficult opponents for both teams are basically the same outside of Florida playing Georgia and OU playing Bama. Also, LSU's toughest games are all in Baton Rouge, so it's debatable. OU is playing AT LSU, AT Ole Miss, and AT Missouri. Florida doesn't have a single tough road game except the one that's still in Florida against FSU. As an OU fan, if OU's only tough road game was in Stillwater against OSU, I wouldn't even count it as much HF advantage for OSU.

I’ve been tracking OU. Their game against our guys is a sleeper matchup, considering Rattler and Beamer coming to SC from OU, and Venables having years of experience playing the Gamecocks. I hope our guys can win but OU is an unknown to me. Lots of talent, and Venables just needs to bring it all together. For all intents and purposes, Beamer is coaching for his job this season. Our team is about to be yet again, at a crossroads if we founder this year.

I’m so excited for Georgia @ Texas. I think that game could be a game of the century level game that also determines the Heisman Trophy. Just NFL talent all over the field, and it’s not every day you see Georgia play in Darrel K. Royal Stadium. Sark’s offense vs Kirby’s defense, Ewers vs Beck, new up and coming SEC arrival in Texas vs solidified SEC juggernaut in Georgia. Can’t wait.

Yeah... on paper - and they have to stay healthy (which can be said of everyone). It will be interesting to see which 'mediocre' team almost trips them up this year. Indiana has done it in the past, Penn State may this year, but they always seem to have one or two close calls in the last few years. (full disclosure: I am Michigan fan)

I'm a Texas fan and I have no illusions at ALL about rolling into Ann Arbor and coming out with anything resembling a comfortable win. We have a lot of questions to answer on the d-line and I'm not warm and fuzzy about our secondary either. Michigan did lose a lot, but they have talent and a good culture. That game will be a dogfight.

I can't wait to see Colorado. I know Deion Drama BUT, there have been a few transfers back out, and in order to move forward he may need to make some personnel changes. Ohio State traveling to Autzen Stadium to play Oregon is my game of the season. This could be Oregon's statement game. With a win it puts them at the top of the rankings. With a Big10 title they receive a first-round bye in playoffs. This really could be their year to finally win a National Title.

Wyoming was really good at home but not so good on the road. Air Force was that team but the late session injuries killed them. I'm looking at Boise State to get back the top of the mountain west however it could easily be Oregon State or a team from the American like Memphis

Sure, if UM DOES beat Texas they are in very good shape. OTOH I'm not sure if Michigan LOSING the Texas game means much. Their new OL will have many strong elements (a 5th year senior, a grad transfer and 3 rising seniors with 3 years experience in the system), but it's easily possible they haven't gelled yet by that time. However, they WILL be perfectly ready to SMASH after the first by-week. Edit: Same as Bama last year - losing to Texas didn't stop them from winning their conference and making the playoff...

Agreed. Facing a team as good as TX, even at home, with a new QB and OL is a tough ask. The D will keep them in and I would not be surprised if they win. But if I had to try to identify a potential loss it'd be that one because of how early it is in the season and not sure if Michigan will have found its identity.

I think the Oregon at Michigan game is bigger and will have more consequences. Michigan could lose to Texas by double digits and it won't matter come December.

Joel - how are we going to evaluate records in this new era and the unbalanced schedules? You’ve mentioned Nebraska, Missouri, Penn State and other mid-tier teams that potentially could be undefeated but play very few challenging games. Last year was the first time I remember the committee really valuing the record in their rankings. For Notre Dame to have a shot at the playoff they need that win. Same thing for TAMU. A TAMU win reinforces the idea of SEC greatness, and tarnishes any team that loses to Notre Dame the rest of the season. Very important to the ACC.

Both the Big 10 and SEC are loaded with blueblood programs now, how Ohio State, Georgia, Texas, Oregon, USC, Oklahoma , Michigan, Alabama are going to run their respective Conference schedules without a loss seems almost impossible . Coming from a Michigan fan, Kirby Smart and Georgia are the proper standard for Coaching and program success now. Alabama is still Alabama for now and anybody thinks because Saban is gone they can't take you behind the woodshed is mistaken I think. My Wolverines need to find a way to sustain player development and maybe get a 5 star here and there this year they will have to play the most difficult schedule any Michigan team has ever had. As for not playing Penn State this year that's a bummer but all the new additions of teams does create some very interesting new regular season matchups Texas Georgia that's awesome for the SEC fans.

As a 2nd gen Buckeye, I agree 100%. I went back and watched a couple of games from the late 90’s, and the energy and toughness was incomparable. Even the home crowds lack the energy and noise from back when I was on campus. One could argue that, that’s happening everywhere…but, it seems particularly bad at OSU. While this 2024 team looks very promising, the pressure on Ryan Day is incredible. I remember that first lost in Ann Arbor 3yrs ago, and how flat, and uninspired they looked. Part of that problem is that 99% of the players aren’t from Ohio, and don’t get tradition, let alone that rivalry (unfortunately, that includes Ryan Day). I hope we have a historic season this year, not just as a life-long Buckeye fan, but I like Ryan Day, and want to see him do well.

As an FSU fan it’s hard to see LSU week 1 as an impactful game for the national narrative. By week 4 nobody cared that FSU beat LSU, and by week 6 everybody forgot how the heisman winner was shut down week 1. Makes it hard to imagine how USC beating LSU week 1 would actually shape the season.

Kansas & K-State are the two Big12 teams that were strong last year and have returning strength. Utah Utes were Pac-12 champions two years in a row and lost to Ohio State by 3 points. They are expected to be Big12 contenders if they are healthy. Then Joel is like, "If [4-8] Colorado beats [5-7] Nebraska, the Big12 could have _two_ teams in the 12-game playoffs."

The ACC dominated the SEC in nonconference play last year but still got snubbed. What Klatt was saying sounds good on paper but then you gotta realize the committee gets to decide the at large spots with no clear cut criteria just like they’ve always done. There won’t be any consistency until the committee is gone or seriously changed.

You’re questioning Michigan’s continuity when we’ve averaged 11 players drafted the past 3 seasons but we rotate players more frequently than any other Power 4 program. Mark it down, Michigan will lead the B1G in time of possession & rush yards per game. They will get the lead & wont relinquish it.
