8-team playoff Would of been a happy medium

Literally(1) every other tournament/playoff in college sports have automatic bids. If you're gonna do 12 teams, then you better have a few auto-bids in there.

UGA having to play Alabama for the third time would be insanity. Its like Alabama gets doubted but finds a way to get back to Georgia

The best part of the 12 team playoff is that if UGA or OSU trip up somewhere, they will have a chance to prove what we think we already know, which is that they are the 2 best. The goal of a postseason is to get the 2 highest rated teams in the final game.

The perfect playoff would be 6 MAYBE 8 teams

The "auto bid" should just get you qualified. You should get something for winning your conference. But then all 12 teams should be seeded after that. So for example Utah might win their conference and qualify but instead of being in the 1-4 slot they could be an 8th seed.

It would be nice to see both FSU and Georgia with their 1st strings playing.

From knoxville, that quarterfinal would be insane. That said, MO beats Ohio in Dec but TN with Nico and a bunch of super senior starters cant 🤔. Would still wanna see that match up.

its hard to make projections because the schedules this year are so different. after probably 4 SEC teams and 3 big10 teams i have no idea. Florida State if they have any players left? I bet Penn State gets left out and they'll get mad and no one shows up for their bowl game. Wait Penn State doesnt have to play michigan or Oregon, Pencil them in. Schedule luck is going to be huge factor.

So as an alumnus I freely admit we have no chance to be national champion, but I think discounting ND from making the playoffs is a bad move. Can you imagine a playoff game in South Bend?

From how it was explained Only the conference champs from the power 4 and the 2 highest group of 5 champs So you could have More then likely the AAC/MAC/CUSA champ as the 11th and 12 seed While BIG10 BIG12 SEC ACC champs getting top 4 bids

IMO.... A 6 team playoff is the perfect way to go. #3 plays #6. #4 plays #5. #1 and #2 get the bye. #1 plays the lowest winning seed and #2 plays the other winner and the #1 and #2 teams play that game at their home stadium The winner plays 1 and 2 play that game at home

The biggest benefit of this to me is that we will now have at least 11 bowl games with the top players not opting out. Outside of the CFP last year the bowl games sucked with opt outs and transfers. This should solve that issue.

The only way to do it is to put the top 12 ranked schools in. The top 4 get a bye. Not sure which ranking could be used.

I like the idea behind the national championship being 1 vs 2 and the reasoning behind wanting that to happen. I agree as long as it’s not Georgia, Ohio State, or Alabama. Please can we get some new blood

The 5 seed could easily be the best spot to be in - everyone has a 4 game path to the Natty regardless. - the 12 seed will almost certainly be a “G5 team” and with all the conference realignment + potential for upsets in the CC games, I’m not scared of facing whoever the 4th seeded Conference champ is. 5 seed has less “neutral site” games too with the opening round home game + 3 neutral sites for the ship [*CC games are all neutral sites guaranteeing the 1-4 seeds 4 neutral site games)

My opinion would be an 8 team playoff with no automatic bids. Or a 12 team bracket with no auto bids, first 2 rounds are campus games and reseeding after the first round

However, we got some really cool meaningful (because if they win they move on) match ups that we wouldn't have in another scenario. Even if your favorite team loses this year, maybe it sparks a playoff rivalry. Maybe it's the first time a parent can see both their kids in the same game because they go to different schools. Maybe it's a "revenge" game for an athlete that didn't get an offer from an in state team. There are so many good stories AND you still get a clear cut champion. It's win win. Who cares if a team gets to play each other a couple of times. They still have to win for the opportunity to do so.

1) Eliminate Divisions in Conferences. 2) Eliminate Conference Championships. 3) Expand to 16 teams playoffs with 1st round having home field advantage for the top 8 teams.

The UT-OU and FSU-UGA reference is irrelevant. One was a regular season game and one was a meaningless bowl game full of 2nd and 3rd string players.

How about 4 super conferences- each conference host their own four team playoff and then each conference champ gets into the current 4 team playoff? There, 16 teams and all based on wins and losses and not a bias committee

What will suck in this scenerio would be that Texas and Oregon would have had to play an extra game as the 2nd team where the 3rd best in SEC (Tennessee) and 3rd best in Big 10 (Penn St) would not.

I really doubt FSU is upsetting Texas but I get it. Criteria is there will be an upset somewhere. Edit: if I had to say where the upset would be, it’s gotta be Bama over GA early round or Oregon over Ohio State.

Definitely flawed but I think it's going to be a blast.

1. Get rid of the conference championship games so we can eliminate the automatic bids and bias based at larges 2. Model the rankings off the BCS model (statistically based) so we can eliminate bias, perception, and gut feelings and it incentivizes difficult schedules and winning regular season games (Week 1 rankings would be based off of LAST years records) 3. Expand to 16 teams or reduce to 8 so no one has a bye (like the best teams in the nation need more help) 4. The first two rounds need to be played at the higher ranked teams field, the semi final can be something like the cotton bowl and fiesta bowl, and the Natty should be played at the Grand daddy of the them 5. All other bowls can be for teams who didn't make the playoff 4/5. OR just make all playoff games home games for the higher seed throughout the entire playoff which incentivizes winning in the regular season and playing difficult opponents because the rankings are statistically based

I agree....thats a great playoff and possible...except we know Miami will find a way to out. Ole Miss slips in when Missouri loses to Georgia in the SEC title game and Michigan is the last team left out and the entire state explodes!

i don't mind auto bid for the 4 conference champions. You need to provide an incentive for wining a conference championship or you will see players and teams sit players for the playoffs. A bye is a HUGE deal in football. You want that bye so you don't have to play an extra game and risk injury.

Why is there no Notre Dame? You can't have a perfect 12 Team CFP without Notre Dame. ND is better than every team you have 5-12 besides Oregon.

This would be objective, as there is one for sure way to punch your ticket. Also, if a conference was “easier” to win than others, wouldn’t that be enticing for universities to simply just join another conference since apparently it’s that easy?

I'd say take the Pac 2 out of the automatic bid. The 4 teams that make the conference champ gets an automatic bid with the winner getting a bye and 4 at large bids.

You missed one detail about that particular hypothetical match-up. The Natty is in Atlanta this season. Assuming they'd get to pick their bowl game, they'd pick the Peach Bowl for obvious reasons.
