ok, I kind of love "the sober one is currently on tour," kind of because it's totally inscrutable--to us. Obviously this is just conjecture but it really sounds like an inside joke this person had with close friends or family, and now etched into their memory is a little piece that only the ones closest to them get to have access to. It's okay if we don't get it, it's not *for* us. A graveyard is so public and we all get access to this part of a person's legacy, and I think it's really charming for someone to say "no, you don't get to understand everything about who I was, you never *knew* me. That part of me is only for the people I love." I really like that perspective, and I hope the people who get the joke got a good laugh out of it.

My great grandparents have "We put up a hell of a fight" on their tombstone. The thing is, no one knows why it says that. The cousins who ordered the tombstone didn't request it. We don't believe my great grandmother requested it (or if she did, she never told us). It's just there, on the back of the stone, almost hidden by grass. Very odd.

My grandfather died before I ever met him. I'm told he was a warm and funny guy and I'm a lot like him. We spend a long time saving for a tombstone and when we finally had it installed we looked in awe at the words "always remenbered" and just laughed. We've debated on fixing the spelling mistake but we feel grandpa would have loved it.

I recently went to a funeral for an old relative. She died having very many ailments but really didn’t like to complain and she asked for no eulogies. We honoured her wishes and her son explained the reasoning by quoting the phrase he said he’d most often here her say on the phone…. ‘Anyway, enough about me. How’re you?’ And if that’s not a sweet epitaph I don’t know what is.

Based on this video, I have to share a book recommendation. Waiting for Gertrude by Bill Richardson is a book based on the cemetery Pere Lechaise in Paris, where many famous artists and creatives are buried. The premise is all of the artists (Chopin, Jimmy Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Alice Toklas, Maria Callas, and more) are reincarnated as the feral cats who live there. Delightful, fun, and very macabre.

Ah you think whimsy is your ally? You merely adopted the cemetery. I was buried in it, mausoleumed by it.

My grandmother is a historian and visiting graveyards was a very normal event in my childhood, usually hunting for some distant family member or finding the burial place of one of her soldiers (her area of expertise was a particular cavalry unit from the Civil War era). Watching this brought back fond memories! Thanks!
