This is similar to how bareknuckle boxers make a fist... it binds the bones in your hands together stronger and in a way, simulates wrapping your hand (not your knuckles) for a fight. It makes a massive difference in how strong your wrist feels (stability and strength) I started doing this a few years ago and it makes a massive difference for me. I came upon this independently myself as a rookie. Thanks for making this detailed video, I feel a bit less crazy now knowing others do it as well, and of course, John is by far my fav...

The reason people cap their thumb is to block their opponent from climbing to gain leverage. If you climb your opponents thumb you can gain leverage and if they cap their thumb they’re blocking you from gaining that leverage. Think of the thumb like it’s the tip of a shovel. It’s much easier to pivot the spade from the end of the handle. The closer to the spade you get the more resistance you will meet.

The capped grip helps thr low hand toproll strength at base of thumb. This uncapped John grip puts height at index finger knuckle, but is more vulnerable to be thrown into a hook. John has super strong pronator so this balance works well. The low hand toproll, knuckles forward, capped grip is more vulnerable to have wrist flexion beaten

I met Gabriel Yung and he taught me this, it also makes your grip feel sooo much tighter as you get more leverage and control over the hand.

Arm wrestling newb here (only 1.5 years in). It’s always been my understanding that you can’t cover the opponent’s thumb knuckle prior to the go, but afterwards you can. In your breakdown you emphasize him not covering it after the go a couple times, so my question is whether or not that’s illegal, or if it’s because he doesn’t want to for what he’s trying to achieve. Any input is welcome, thanks in advance 🙏🏽

It seems to me not covering your thumb is less reliant on riser. Cause when I find myself losing my riser in a tournament I automatically stoped covering my thumb

Whoever closes their hand first while in the straps gets more coverage on their opponents hand. Which means there fingers are further around the back of the opponent’s hand

Johns been pulling for most of his life competitively. If you can master something in ten years what is it called when you’ve been doing it for 40? You’re innovating it at that point I would imagine

His hand goes back in the grip. The guy who made the video points that out. He isn’t back as far as his opponents but it’s still back. Besides John is an anomaly.

Devon explained his reason for Capping in a video. The reason is that he likes to pronate using his thumb. He explained it as attacking the thumb of his opponent using his own thumb and index finger in a twisting manner.

I think John would cap his thumb if his thumb wasn't so fat. This strange grip works for John because of his ridiculously large thumb and fat fingers, but I'd recommend new arm wrestlers to just simply cap instead if they want a high top roll grip.
@rjharrold2907
@rjharrold2907 9 ай бұрын
I started by just blasting my thumb down into palm to get webbing height too and capping but recently I've been lifting my thumb because when you put it down like that its easier for dudes to keep you out of their fingers when they wrap. I'm still learning and perfecting but I'd say it depends on how the setup is too
@ehoc42
@ehoc42 9 ай бұрын
@@rjharrold2907 that makes sense. The downside of John's grip is that you can't really use your index finger at all, it's just free floating. It works for John because his bottom fingers are so strong and his thumb is so big, but if you have a small thumb I think it's just better to cap
@PerformanceEnhancingPancakes

perhaps, would be interesting to get his take on it at some point!

@rjharrold2907 9 ай бұрын
@@ehoc42 my thumb isn't little but probably average or slightly above average for my class. 3 inches circumference at the end knuckle. It lacks mobility in the bottom knuckle though on my right hand, if I fully open my hand, thumb, everything, that knuckle stays bent at like between 90 and 180 which would be straight

@6:38 how can't anyone else see Michael Todd's elbow clear as day. Clearly not on the pad where it should be!! His "kings move" of all kings moves I've seen is the worst.. And this is the guy that invented the move. No way to keep your elbow on the pad and use your body weight the way he is without it looking like the bullshit move it really is. Devon does it, and it's no where nearly as effective, yet Devon tries to actually keep his elbow on the pad! All you see is Michael's head and elbow off the pad, the rest of Micheal is using everything but his arm at this point to win
