It blows my mind how f*cking genius John Cale is, that performance of ‘Fear is a Man’s Best Friend’ one of the greatest songs of all time, is electrifying. “Kind of hard to follow that” damn right Chrissie 👌 Three legends on one stage.

I can't believe how much John Cale's "Dying on the Vine" sounds like Nick Cave. Or should I say Nick Cave sounds just like John Cale's "Dying on the Vine". You can the hear the influence.

"Dying on the vine " just sums it all up for those who know that they have so much more to give and perhaps also don't know how to move ahead, to gamble, take a risk, grasp the nettle and believe that what you have is something valuable that a wider world will get. John Cale is such a precious gift to the world. Gracious and generous, polite and caring yet forthright in his own way of what is right. More people need to pay attention to the likes of John Cale. PS the 3 of them make a great ensemble.

Some boring information for you there.

Nice to see somebody discovering the Welsh Wizard! As being new to Cale I'd recommend you his Island Years (compilation of his albums Fear, Slow Dazzle and Helen Of Troy), Sabotage/Live and Music For A New Society. But possibly even more impressive are his live appearances, especially his 70's and 80's gigs. He was a real beast live, once even decapitating a chicken on stage. I have quite a bit of his live stuff uploaded, maybe you want to check it out. Hope you enjoy!

Dang. I love all 3 of these people. Don't know who my favorite is so I won't even try. John Cale is vastly under-recognized. To me he was the most interesting member of Velvet Underground. I did NOT just trash Lou Reed there LISTEN to all his albums. Nick Cave has one of the best voices in the business at this point in time. Listening to this it's nearly impossible to reconcile his speaking voice with his singing voice! Listening to their darker sides,I tend to think of Nick and John as the brothers of Jim Morrison the family does not like to talk about. And Chrissie? Well....she's Chrissie....Such a wonderful voice.

Im like the biggest Nick fan, but i love that there's all this testosterone flying cross the room with Nick being amazing and loving John, the John feeling like he has to punk up his vibe for Nick, and Chrissie is just over here like aw shucks I'm gonna have an amazing timbre, great chops and simple, pretty punk era songwriting skills, and she tosses it off like "shit i hope that was good enough". She's so great, hahaha.

I love how everyone here has their own favorite! Also love that Chrissie does the duet part on Henry Lee - never liked that song before but it's beautiful in a setting like this, and the harmony really is key to it. And the concept of quite different artist doing one song each at a time in front of an audience in this way, magical! Great :)

I have love for all three of these artists. Having seen both Nick and John live twice, I appreciate this video very very much -and would never expect them to share a stage. What is interesting is how Nick pushed songwriting as a storyteller singing from a narrative perspective the farthest, similar to Tom Waits. The business of storytelling, pushing the limits of songs he has done with great success. While his writing with piano is far more conventional than Birthday Party, he really created worlds within worlds. Not an easy thing to do in any way, but he approaches it very methodically and with discipline. Who could imagine how he would find his place as one of the greatest of all times? Nothing about Nick Cave in 1979 would predict his future growth and incredible presence artistically.

Why take 2 collaborative songs as an introduction to Cale, when you can have the real deal with his solo work. E.g. The Endless Plain Of Fortune from Paris 1919, exposing Cale:s classical talents. In contrast to that I'd take Sanities from Music For A New Society, which pushes the boundaries of common music to its extreme. Both albums are a masterclass and express the musical range JC has covered in his career, making him possibly the most versatile musician there has ever been.

21:21 (Dying on the vine lyrics) I've been chasing ghosts and I don't like it I wish someone would show me where to draw the line I'd lay down my sword if you would take it And tell everyone back home I'm doing fine I was with you down in Acapulco Trading clothing for some wine Smelling like an old adobe woman Or a William Burroughs playing for lost time I was thinking about my mother I was thinking about what's mine I was living my life like a Hollywood But I was dying on the vine Who could sleep through all that noisy chatter The troops, the celebrations in the sun The authorities say my papers are all in order And if I wasn't such a coward I would run I'll see you me when all the shooting's over Meet me on the other side of town Yes, you can bring all your friends along for protection It's always nice to have them hanging around I was thinking about my mother I was thinking about what's mine I was living my life like a Hollywood But I was dying, dying on the vine
