I'm not so sure about that, Considering how much The Thing is widely seen as one of the best horror films of all time. I'd say putting Halloween at #1 of a Carpenter ranking is arguably the hotter take.

It’s impossible for me to rank Halloween. it could easily be the best based solely on how influential it was or outside the top 3 because of how much Carpenter learned after doing it. I don’t know but I do prefer the Thing.

One thing I love about John Carpenter is that he really tried to make genre fiction and B-movies into something that could be respected. The fact that people call him one of the best directors ever despite only making genre fiction is a testament to John Carpenter’s skill as a filmmaker.

For me it's The thing 1982. My childhood was filled with stuff like Akira 1988, Ninja scroll, Perfect blue, Memories 1995, Wicked city & VhD: Bloodlust. By the time I finally checked out Halloween, It felt a kids film to me. Not scary at all but still a good one though.

1. Halloween, I will agree that I'm burned out on talking about it and the fighting in the fanbase but this is still my favorite horror movie. 2. In The Mouth of Madness is awesome and gets better each time you watch it. 3. They Live is a crazy fun movie and I dig the darker ending. You didn't see too many movies end with the main heroes dying in the 80s. It was a cool twist that the so-called love interest was actually a villain the whole time. Great social commentary with how the middle class is declining and it's scary how this movie feels more real in 2024. 4. The Thing, great special effects, great music, cool characters and another great dark ending. 5. Christine, mixing Stephen King and John Carpenter is my jam. 6. Escape From NY has Kurt as one of the coolest movie characters ever. 7. Vampires is criminally underrated and James Wood is awesome in everything. 8. Assault on Precinct 13 is really cool low budget 70s thriller, 9. The Fog, it drops the ball a little bit in the 3rd act but most of it was really strong and love Tom as the lead. 10. Big Trouble in Little China, I don't like it as much as I did as a kid, but I still have fun with it and Jack Burton is a fun character. I find most JC movies to be a least watchable, but I hate Ghost of Mars and his Invisible Man with Chevy Chase is also pretty unwatchable. Movies like The Ward and Escape from LA fall on the disappointing side but I don't hate them.

The unfortunate thing about THE THING is, it came out in a time when the vast majority of sci-fi we were getting at the time were STAR TREK and STAR WARS movies, plus the fact that it was released against E. T. (which I will admit is my all time favorite movie), and people were all on the mindset that sci-fi was supposed to be fun and upbeat, and family friendly, and seemed to have somehow forgotten about Ridley Scott's cinematic masterpiece ALIEN, and the Roger Corman produced gems like GALAXY OF TERROR and FORBIDDEN WORLD aka MUTANT, so the reviews were completely unfair. The movie was, and still is one of the best in sci-fi horror. In fact, I consider it tied with ALIEN as the best sci-fi horror film ever made. And, from what I've heard, this is a much more faithful adaptation of the source novel, WHO GOES THERE than the previous "adaptation". And, let's not forget the score by Ennio Morricone, who managed to make a beautiful, and chilling Carpenteresque score. JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING will always be a brilliant exercise in sci-fi horror filmmaking. I loved it when I first saw it when it first came on cable TV. And, even though I was only around 16 at the time, and was mostly into STAR TREK and STAR WARS, I loved it. And even back then, I was able to pick up on the cold war paranoia that was nicely woven into the film, that from what I heard was a major undercurrent in the source novel, which unfortunately to this day, I've never read. And, let us not forget the brilliant practical effects work of the very talented Rob Bottin. He literally worked himself almost to death to help creating a celluloid nightmare that will live on forever. Sorry, Mr Leach, for this verbal diarrhea essay, but when it comes to movies I love, I can't talk about them enough. Oh, and before I forget, also have to talk about the excellent screenplay by Bill Lancaster, who truly got the assignment and is partly responsible for the nightmares induced from the film, and also, the brilliant ensemble cast. I'm not going to pick out one over the other, because they were all equally great, and helped make the movie what it is. Which, in my opinion, is John Carpenter's best work
@thomasffrench3639
@thomasffrench3639 Күн бұрын
You also have to remember it was also a remake. The original Thing from Another World is pretty well regarded so making a gory version of it would make people of the 80s not very happy, especially people who loved Halloween which was his most successful film at that point which was know for “being above” gore (despite the fact that it was Yablans’s idea) which made people disappointed in it. Remember all the outrage about slashers being too gory? Yeah, The Thing had similar criticism.
@drhacknslashzombietimelord6768
@drhacknslashzombietimelord6768 Күн бұрын
@@thomasffrench3639 Yeah, I kind of forgot about the remake and didn't think about the gore issue. And it came out in 1982, which is fell during the time when the MPAA had a full on hate slashers and and gory horror movies. They were extremely pissed that the original FRIDAY THE 13TH had "gotten away" with all the bloody effects, and were going across every horror movie with a vengeance and would slap an X rating on every horror movie that came their way. And, to make matters worse, especially for independent horror filmmakers, they had no clear cut guidelines that a filmmaker could follow, and would make-up vague guidelines along the way to make things highly difficult for the directors. One of the chief vagaries they would throw out was "cumulative effect" resulting in several submissions to the MPAA just to get an R. There was a certain point when the filmmakers would release them in the cinema unrated, but, eventually the MPAA was strong arming theater chains into not showing any film that had the X rating, or were released unrated. Top that off, they started forcing major studios that were releasing horror movies into agreeing to never release any (horror) movie without an MPAA rating of an R, or less, and would make it difficult for mainstream studios who made horror, and threatening to give any movie they released, no matter what the content was, an automatic X rating, so they had no choice but to comply. Not to mention on the remake front, remakes were not very common at all during that time, based mostly in part to the fact that most remakes that came out during that time were terrible and were made by people who trying to go for the quick cash grab and not putting really any effort into making the movie that people would want to actually go see. What John Carpenter did was make his THE THING remake actually a lot closer to the John W. Campbell story, with characters that were very compelling and that you could actually like, even though some of those characters were unlikable people, which is what they were supposed to be. Heck, if Steven Spielberg had made JAWS with the main characters as they were actually written in the book, then everyone would have been rooting for the shark, and the only semi likeable one of the main characters in the book was Quint.

Another fantastic watch. I love your ranking videos and was looking forward to this once all the Carpenter reviews were in. As a wee bit of trivia, Kurt Russell made two sequels to The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (for the trilogy of films as the Dexter Riley character he made with Disney between 1969-1975), plus featured in three Fast & Furious movies, so he has done sequels outside of Escape from L.A. for Carpenter, though the F&F were not as a main character.

I love John Carpenter, but I prefer his action movies to his horror movies aside from The Thing. Although Halloween has grown on me when I stopped treating it like a John Carpenter film because it doesn’t really feel like a John Carpenter movie to me. For horror directors Tobe Hooper is probably my favorite

After Halloween, John Carpenter directed the made for TV movie 'Elvis', starring Kurt Russell. I'm not saying it should be considered for this list, since it was a tv project. But I find it interesting that it was his first collaboration with Kurt Russell.

I agree a remake of Christine could be interesting, I think the classic time period helps to make the whole film work. I certainly don't want to see a 'modern re-imagine' with a possessed Tesla!!
