Me too. Moral Orel introduced me to The Mountain Goats years ago. I finally got to see them last year. I met John after the show too. Awesome show, awesome guy!

I really like them, but they are a bit weird. This guy seems to know his music and The Kinks use odd song structures that can be almost off-putting to some people. Very good imo though.

At the end of the day, all taste is given to be subjective and reactionary and peculiar. I've encounter plenty of people who Know Their Music yet unaccountably "hate" The Beatles, or The Pixies, mainly to knock them down several pegs over perceived Overratedness. It's a pose, in most cases. I'm not going to insult Johnny D's reasoning for disliking The Kinks -- a band that had more than its fair share of genius songs, and way more than The Beatles, I'd subjectively add -- although the series does bare the curious quality of an off-the-cuff neophyte. That's part of its appeal - zero pretension, pity, straight from the gut opinions.

I get it. If you like structure or lyrical coherence I can see how they might grind your gears. As for me I don’t care about structure if they can do that thing where it reaches into your flow state, which the kinks always does for me.

Nancy Spungen the kinks are absolute legends and changed music as we know it. I’d say it’s a far more egregious offense to dislike them when Florence and the machine is as commercialized and radio friendly as you can be

I think that there's a big difference between not liking a band and not respecting their contribution to music. You can't do anything about your taste, and if you don't like something you can't force yourself to like it. My problem wasn't with the fact that he didn't like Florence's song (and you're completely entitled to your opinion about her music, even if I don't entirely agree lol), it was that he said it sounded disingenuous (more or less). Besides that whole mess and this novel I just wrote, I didn't mean my initial comment to be serious in any way. I was just taking the piss over my favorite musician criticizing my second favorite musician. bc I'm petty af

She sounds disingenuous to me, theres not much soul in her music, shes sort of an indie Celine Dion. But yeah, its still fine to like her music its just music after all.

The entirety of Arthur is from a character’s perspective, based on RD’s Brother in Law. It’s a fools game trying tie these kinds of writers to their lyrics given they deliberately write from multiple perspectives.

i've found that musicians tend to have questionable taste in music (at best). DJs/producers are the people to ask about this type of stuff imo.

I'm a big fan of The Mountain Goats, and something I love about John Darnielle is how incredibly, unabashedly dorky he can be. Occasionally onstage but especially in his personal life re: his interests- Magic the Gathering, D&D, reading dense academic books about history for fun are a few. I'm good with anyone who's a dork or nerd and doesn't give a damn what anyone else thinks (my partner of 13 years definitely fits the description perfectly).

False. Darnielle is good. Davies is good and great. We'll see in 50 years whether Darnielle's stuff hold up half as well. I have my doubts.

As long as we're pulling Facts out of our fundament, let me submit: it's objectively true that Franklin Bruno is not only a better songwriter and musician than Darnielle by a factor of exactly 301424%, Bruno is also literally a better songwriter than Irving Berlin, Kurt Weill, Woody Guthrie, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Randy Newman, Townes Van Zandt, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Kern and Stephen Fucking Foster.
