Glad you enjoyed the video; I'm amazed at how many views for this old mower. Rescued this old mower from a fence line. Removed the knife, then removed the knife head and all knife sections. Cleaned and straightened the knife and replaced all the knife sections. Cleaned the pitman hardware and installed new pitman. All of our sickle mowers have new knives. Will center the knife section in the guard and use a small file to sharpen the section if necessary.

@DamnStraightM35A2 A sickle mower is really designed to cut tall grass. After the grass is cut, it falls flat on the ground. One thing I've learned is that the shorter the grass, the louder the sickle mower. The finishing mower is basically a 6ft heavy duty lawn mower. Grass is cut and mulched with the finishing mower. Take a look at several of the 350 sickle mower videos to get an idea of what to expect.

This brings back (memories) I've cut a many alfalfa fields back in the early seventies with a sickle bar mower and a JD 3010 roll chop, Did a pretty nice job. But i for sure hated taking out those blades and sharpening them at 16 years old.
Mowing hay, trimming barberry hedges - all in a day's work for these excellent implements in the 1950s.

Refurbished this old mower over 7 years ago. Only used it one time on our 1952 Model A tractor. Tractor broke down and removed mower to haul tractor to mechanic's shop. Never put the mower back on. Will be the next sickle mower to "spruce up" again and put back in service.

Yes, you can adjust the height of the cutter bar by "raising" both the inner shoe and outer shoe.

What's the difference between 39 and 39n?

So far we have not had any problems with the wooden pitman sticks on any of our mowers. With that said, one will probably break the next time the mower is used.

I think that was one of the reasons they made the Pitman arms out of wood: So they'd act as a sort of "shear pin" and break to protect the machine. Perhaps another reason would be reciprocating weight. I'm no expert - just speculating. I recently acquired a couple of old mowers and they came with a bucket of bits & pieces plus a half-dozen Pitman sticks. :)

@stevemann1967 The parts manual is currently offered on eBay. You can also see if your local Deere dealer can order one for you. The wooden pitman stick is available at tractor supply. If you visit Yestersdays Tractor web sight, send out a call to David from Kansas. He will have the mower parts you need. Hope this helps.
