I very unexpectedly ended buying a 1959 John Deere 730 diesel. I have wanted a 730 for many years, and it is replacing the previous 820 I had a few years ago. Due to the rather suddenness of this purchase and the time of year, I doubt there will be many videos on it for the time being. However, now that its here, I don't see it going anywhere.
Playlist of the 820 videos from 2016-2019. I sold the 820 in Sept of 2019.... almost 2 years without a two cylinder.

Grew up on one from new in 1959, wore the float-ride seat crooked from plowing so long. Had some fuel starvation until we found the primary fuel pump was worn. Kept it until 1973 when dad traded for a 4030.

Got a winner there. Should not advance the throttle prior to releasing the decompression or you are introducing fuel without ignition and washing your cylinders of oil. You have a third link also which is very rare! Nice find. It's the tractor I grew up with but with the pony start.

Awesome. My cousin has a 730 Wheatland that's been on his family's farm since new. I've been in love with that tractor for the best part of 35 years, my dad couldn't get me off it, on a trip we did out there when I was 3

Congratulations on the new toy! One of my wish list tractors (if not a 720D). That 730D doesn't look bad overall. The front rockshafts are getting hard to find, let alone independent ones for each side. My grandfather used to have a set of them on the 60 then switched them over to the 520 for cultivating.

Thanks! Very unexpected for sure. I’ve already put the rock shafts on a pallet for long term storage. Maybe one day I’ll decide I need to cultivate some corn!

Great score on the 730!,…I’ve been watching your videos on and off through the summer and haven’t commented, but figured I should on this video because I’m such a two-cylinder fan! I bought a 720D last summer and absolutely love it! Don’t get me wrong I love my 820 and all the others but there’s something about that 720 lol. I put a wide from on my 720 last spring and it’s a fairly simple job outside it just being grunt work. It should be an easy task for you especially having tractors with pallet forks to assist with the lifting. If your looking for gauges I highly recommend evergreen restoration out of Wisconsin, Jerry has the highest quality gauges you can buy. Unfortunately New Paris tractor parts is going out of business and will be having an auction next spring but until then Richard is an unbelievable guy to work with! Once again congrats on the new purchase!

I’ve hear lots of good things about Evergreen. It’s hard for me to slow roll this 730, but realistically it should sit for the winter and I can come back to it next summer AFTER I’ve finished up the big reorganization project.

I enjoyed the 820 series of videos. I was a little disappointed when you let it go, but I understand available space was an issue. 👍

I was and still am disappointed I let it go. It was the right decision but still something I can gripe about!

I'm 70 yrs. old and never once heard of a John Deere 2 cylinder refered to as a " Machine " Combines, backhoes, probably new stuff are maybe machines but that is a Tractor, a John Deere Tractor at that. Please don't disrespect it to a simple machine. It does run really nice and shouldn't need any engine work. Transmission is a bit noisy so you may want to check bearings and gears. I do have a '59 730 Diesel, E.S, factory wide front, flat top fenders, 4 front weights, rear weights, complete 3 pt., single hydraulics, air stack with pre screen in excellent mechanical shape. Gauges all work too. Head gasket went to leaking so it's been in the back of the pole barn with coolant drained for years. I should dig it out and get it running again. One thing for sure she always identified as a Tractor especially with duals on, not a machine. I also have a complete J.D. 6 row cultivator plus J.D. 3-16 & 5-14 bottom heavy duty trailer plows. 6 lug wheels. Hope you got it fixed up nice.

Interesting take on verbiage. Never really considered tractor vs machine. This one gets taken on afternoon tractor drives once or twice a month in the summer. Everything is working well, fires right up pretty much regardless of temperature.

That tractor runs nice. Now I have to ask how fast have you gotten it to go? I know my brothers 1947 John Deere B scurries right along in 6th gear didn't throttle it up though wasn't running to great need to get the mag rebuilt for it still.

I’m guessing it will do 11-12 mph.

@@mmrbeef I would think the top speed would be 12 miles an hour you wouldn’t think 12 miles an hour is fast but On one of these tractors it is! I had a 49 John Deere B six speeds and the first time I put it in road gear The front end lifted a little bit off the ground!
