John Deere A Hauling Grain | Winter Wheat

Farm Grown, Country Strong

Farm Grown, Country Strong

8 жыл бұрын

In the past few days we have been working on harvesting our winter wheat, here in Northeast Wisconsin. The weather has been a challenge for harvesting, but we're getting at it!
We are temporarily storing the grain ourselves, so we put the old 1948 John Deere A to work pulling a gravity box around. The A likes to bark when the wagon is loaded all the way!
Also being used is a Case IH 1620 combine and a Ficklin 231 gravity wagon.
*Pardon the jerky footage, but it's hard to film, steer, shift, and work a hand clutch at the same time!

Love seeing old tractors doing work like they were meant to do, follow the maintenance schedule, and keep them out of the weather and they rarely ever have problems.

Oh yes, the gravity flow wagons! We shoveled corn off a flat bed wagon for some time before dad got those wonderful Little Giant gravity flow wagons. Then dad got a bigger aluminum elevator with a swing down. We were really cooking then! We had John Deeres, Massey Furgisons and Fords and International Harversters, but the neighbors had all John Deeres and some of their fields were past our house, so on the way to their fields, we literately had convoys of poppin Johnies parading by! I now wish I had recorded it, but that was the days before internet and video cameras!

I never got to run a John Deere we only had case and massy Harris, McCormick Deering. I used to operate a Farmall H on baling and snow plowing in winter, front end loader for manure, small case on the rake.

My grandfather had a model A. When I was 5 or 6 he let me drive it around, I also remember being a bit intimidated with its size compared to the AC WD tractor my dad had. When I graduated to combine duty, dad had to teach me how to tie the sacks shut ( I'm left handed ) and everyone knew the bags I had done when they went to open them. lol

in the 80's We had a JD 60 which I loved but when I was on grain or hay hauling duty I was in the IH 1486, granddad didn't trust the tractor weight of the 60 vs weight of the grain load on the steep hills.

My driving instructor was my Grandpa. My first ride was a 1937 model A "unstyled of course" . Love those old tractors!! No lights, no electric start. Simpler times. Now John Deere has law suits from farmers fighting for rights to computer software for self repair!! SOOO SAD.

I am more of a John Deere B person. nice A though do you think that you could unload on the go?
@farmgrowncountrystrong
@farmgrowncountrystrong 7 жыл бұрын
You can unload on the go. A few years back I was pulling that wagon with the JD 50 and we were unloading on the go. As the wagon got fuller and fuller, the 50 would really start barking! You had to keep giving it gas lol. Dad tells the story of when he was younger he was combining with a Gleaner and unloading on the go with grandpa driving the 50. The 50 ran out of gas while unloading and it made a mess!
