A look at the John Deere aerator/spreader combo pull behind. Nice tool, bit of trouble putting it together though. If you have questions on assembly let me know, and I can get you the answer, or bits of the footage from the assembly process. Keep watching for some use and anything else that may come up with this spreader!

I was looking at this but decided I rather get the plug aerator and I also already have the John Deere 130lb broadcast spreader. I use it for seeding, fertilizing and salting my driveway in the winter. I’m happy to see a video about this though, for future reference.

I should clarify. My broadcast spreader is a tow behind.

I wonder if the drop spreader would be heavy enough to pull a spiked roller behind it to help push seeds down to the soil.
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage 7 ай бұрын
Probably not. You wouldn’t need a spiked roller, I seeded a yard and rolled it with my Brinly roller, had fantastic results. But that roller is 600lbs with water, so I would think it would drag the spreader between the tractor and roller. Plus you would have to heavily modify it to include a hitch. Now a cool project would be to build a new chassis for one that you can add weights to, maybe even come loaded tires, and a drum to hold more seed, then mount the hopper and tines to it. You would probably want it to weigh close to the roller to pull properly.

Thanks for the video. Do you think the wheels could be flipped to the inside to enable it to fit down narrower spaces?
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Жыл бұрын
No they can’t, when lowered, the wheels go forward, so you wouldn’t be able lower it if flipped… I’d imagine if you were good at fabricating, you could modify it to go the other way, but probably not worth it.

I would not buy a spike aerator only. If ya get the spreader that’s fine, but you would be better off with a plug aerator. Aerated the ground way more, actually pulls chunks out where as the spike just makes a fine cut in the ground.

Decent opening, you can do grass seed, fertilizers, I’ve done lime, but pulverized, you would be better with pelletized.

Great videos I have an X580 and really enjoy it. Would you buy this attachment again for the task of overseeding? I have a new planting 1.25 acres to thicken and improve. I have a plug aerator for that job and a contractor does the fertilizer and weed control. So it would just overseed annually for me. Would you recommend it for that purpose based on your experience? I like the thought of the group f contact with this vs broadcasting seed but maybe im overthinking it
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Жыл бұрын
I would definitely buy it again. It would be great for overseeding. If you were only using it for seed though, may not be cost effective compared to a tow behind broadcast spreader. You have a plug aerator, so that covers aerating. Grass can be overlapped and you won’t notice much when overseeding like you would if fertilizer were to overlap, creating a bunch of stripes. If you plan to do stuff other than seed at all, go with this one. Money can also be saved buying the Brinly branded version of this.

Great thank you! It is cool looking but a lot more investment vs a simple broadcast spreader for seeding. If you have used the broadcast method would you roll or take the seed in afterwards?
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage Жыл бұрын
I haven’t used a tow behind broadcast, but I’ve planted grass with the drop spreader and I rolled it. You said you were overseeding, so I would roll, not rake.

Do keep us updated on how it works. I ordered the John Deere Plug Aerator and Thatcher combo (Part number LP39089). I also ordered the Tow-Behind Broadcast Spreader, 130 lb (Part number LP39087). So, is this aerator/spreader combo in your video better than the broadcast spreader I got? Or is it for a different purpose? Reason I ask is that, even if I ordered and paid for mine, I can still decide to exchange it when I go to pick up all the attachments I ordered.
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage 3 жыл бұрын
So I wouldn’t really say better, it is more precise. The drop spreader simply “drops” material, it doesn’t throw it all over the place like broadcast. So if you have 3 acres you are fertilizing, broadcast is probably better, you just have less control, and have to be careful with overlaps. It’s easy to see the wheel path of the drop spreader, not so easy to see the edge of a broadcast spreading width. After using both drop and broadcast push spreaders, it was an easy choice for me in pull behinds

@@JoshsGreenGarage I should change mine then... I only have 1/2 acre... I do not want to be shooting fertilizer to the street and drive way, lol. Thank you!
@JoshsGreenGarage
@JoshsGreenGarage 3 жыл бұрын
So 1/2 acre is 21,780sqft, to put that into perspective of how overkill that 130lb spreader is, the weed and feed I use (you will see in my next video “how to find fertilizer spreader setting”) is enough to cover 15,000sqft, weighs 42lbs... you could use 2 bags of that, do more than your yard, and still have capacity for a whole other bag. Granted, weight and hopper size are two different things, so 3 bags may not even fit... but I think that spreader is waaaay overkill for 1/2 acre. Maaaaaybe if you are spreading lime, which is heavy, but that is the only thing I could see you even getting close to using that size of spreader, and all it would do is save you from refilling it as often.

I have been looking at this drop spreader and I see there are two models of this. Home Depot sells the AS-40JD and local JD dealer sells the LPAS40JD. I was wonder if you have researched this.. I can't seem to see any difference except the price. I have read a lot of the reviews from home depot from people who had purchased this from there. All complaints are either poor instructions and chain coming home.. Have you experienced any issues with chain being loose on yours. I just can't wrap my brain around JD putting out a piece of crap equipment even if it is made by Brinley.. I'd appreciate your feed back or from anyone else who might read this comment Thanks

Great question! I have a lengthy explanation, I'll start out with the part numbers. They actually are the same. The only difference is you aren't seeing all the numbers in it. They are both "AS40JD". There are actually even more numbers depending where you look. on the JD website an even longer number is show: 5874MLPAS40JD. So don't get hung up on part number, they are all the same. I have seen some differences in these spreaders though. Most likely revisions even though they are the same part numbers. Mine has steel tines, that are painted black. I got mine through the dealer. Another time I stopped in and they had a bunch sitting in the showroom, but I noticed they had different tines. They had thinner galvanized tines that were stamped for rigidity. I can't stay if they have any other differences, they didn't appear to. I also can't say if either is better, it is kinda up to the buyer. I would prefer the one I got had I known there were different ones as I like the idea of thicker steel on the tines, and I don't keep mine outside, so I don't care that they are un-galvanized. That is a choice for you to make, if you have the ability to for sure get one or the other. I can vouch for the instructions being rough. Certain steps are not illustrated very well, but that is what I am here for! I made an assembly video for this, but it was just too long. I saved all the footage, so if anyone requests a certain step, I can upload specific steps. I already have one uploaded that was requested. As for the chain, I have no issue with mine as of yet. I can say that for certain as I put lime on my yard last year, and I could only find pulverized lime, not pelletized, and because of this there were inconsistencies in the size of the granules. There were some chunks in it that were the size of small gravel. A few of them got stuck into the openings at the bottom of the hopper, and when the impeller/auger spun over them, it bent the impeller. I can't see this happening if the chain were slipping. Now don't look at this as a bad thing, it doesn't at all affect the operation of the spreader, just works best with fertilizers and lime that are consistent small granules. In the end this spreader does seem to be of great quality, I'd probably recommend getting it at a dealer already assembled if you can, assembly really does suck on this one... I did make an upgrade to the weight tray on it, and I have a video on it, I definitely recommend doing that one! I am planning on doing some videos shortly about this and my sweeper, breaking them open to see how the parts are holding up, nobody shows that stuff! So keep a lookout for those. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions!

I have the biggest one Brinly makes, you can see it in my X580 50hr review... but anything would work... just pushes the seed into the ground enough that rain won't wash it around... Rolled my buddy's yard after I seeded it, and I have never seen fresh seed come in so even and thick! Well worth it! Try to find one used if you can, save a ton of money! found mine for like 50 or 75 bucks! a steal in my mind! Plus you can also use them for smoothing out a slightly bumpy yard, packing a gravel driveway... There are uses, but not so many that I wanted to pay full price for one.

When you rolled it after was the roller empty or full? I have heard some folks just pulling an empty roller after seeding to just lightly pack the seed not too deep. Or did it work ok with the roller full of water ?
