I have been a farmer harvesting sugar cane. I worked from dawn to dusk equaling to half a minute of this machine at work. Love this machine.

VietFiddle, do you mean that harvesting by hand from dawn to dusk your output equals half a minute of this machine? I remember reading that slaves harvesting cane and producing sugar in the Caribbean would be worked to death in an unimaginable short time. After slavery, before machine harvesting, hand harvesting was still very hard and dangerous work.

Great watch. Why do they only harvest one row at a time? Seems like they could have a multiple row header and get more done quicker. Thanks.
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 3 жыл бұрын
Mainly because you're taking in so much crop. That whole stalk of sugar cane which may be 10 to 14 feet tall is going in and being chopped and cleaned. It's a lot of crop flow through the machine. Deere has a 2 row running in Brazil this year and coming to the USA next year. Case IH is also developing a two row machine.

Many farmers do have the secondary extractor. This farm felt the extra height wasn't worth it as they farm near lots of power lines and trees.

Why are they using GPS in the cane harvester? Is it to track what tonnage the crop is producing?

sir i am so much impressed by this good crop. i would be grateful to you if you guide me about the method of planting. Was it planted on raised bed or in furrows? and what was plant to plant and line to line distance? one thing more sir was it grown from sugarcane nursery or single bud or sugarcane set. In my view there is not enough space between the raised bed for air crossing . please reply i will be waiting for your experience based guidelines.

In the movies that I have seen where they grew sugar cane the would burn the fields, here they cut the cane leaves and all. I guess the leaves is blown out the back of the cutter. I guess they way they harvest the cane has changed over they years? Do they grown anything in the fields after the cane is harvested? How far north can they grow sugar cane? Thanks for a very outstanding movie on sugar can harvesting. can the driver of the cutter see where he is going?
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 5 жыл бұрын
When they use these combine style harvesters they burn the field after they cut it. If they don't the trash leaves will smother the cane thats still in the ground. The cane will regrow without replanting, so they dont plant anything else. Now, after three years of letting the cane regrow, they will plow it under and sometimes let those fields "rest" for a year. In that time some farmers plant soybeans in these "rested" fields. I believe the soybeans are beneficial to the soil. I believe sugarcane is grown as far north as central La. The operator can see just fine. I'll try and get some in cab footage this year once harvest starts. But they're are already videos like that if you're interested.. Thanks for the compliments.

why you don't use silage harvester ? like claas jaguar, krone big x or jd ?
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 5 жыл бұрын
That type of harvester wouldn't work with cane. The cane stalk if filled with juice, that's where the sugar is located. You'd lose way too much if you tried to chop it in the field. The stalks are sent to the mill, then it is crushed to extract the juice. Also, sugarcane stalks are a lot harder than corn. I doubt the machine would be able to chop it up.

This is a crop not grown in my part of Canada. Couple of questions; What part of the stalk gets harvested, what gets discarded? The front most wheels with teeth on the harvester, trimming the tips off? Or guiding the crop in?
@AerialAg
@AerialAg 6 жыл бұрын
The whole stalk is harvested. The leaves (or shucks) are blown out. The wheels in the from is called the topper. It cuts and discards the green tops which are of no use. It only really works when the cane is standing straight.

G James sugarcane whole stalk is harvested ,while this machine is throwing away the leaves or the green part of it ,the leaves here in India are used as animal fodder which is very useful for milking animals like cows and buffaloes ,rest of the sugar cane is sent to sugar mills for processing and making sugar ,such huge harvester machines is only possible in US and Australia where manual labour is a problem
