John Deere D105 won’t move!!!

This is a quick explanation to a John Deere D105 transmission problem. My mower suddenly stopped moving during operation. The engine was running but depressing the pedal, nothing happened. Turned out that a small washer on top of a pulley in the transmission system failed. I could not find many resources on how to fix this problem so I decided to make my own to try and save some people from major headaches and fees. I’m not a licensed mechanic of ANY sort and your decision to follow this “fix” is your own liability in the end. If I could go back in time and purchase a different mower I would have.
PLEASE READ BELOW FOR A FEW MORE STEPS/TIPS!!!
Sorry guys but I missed a few points in my video. If you have any confusion send me a message or leave a comment.
-When you begin to drop the transmission there is also a small electrical box/wire setup that comes out from the frame to the transmission assembly on the passenger side of the mower. This box can (and should) be detached by depressing it from the backside of the box.
-Once you have loosened the transmission bolt mounts you must start disconnecting the drive belt (which goes above the transmission belt). To do this there is a small guide post that keeps the belt in the pulley track. The post is on the passenger side and hardly visible from underneath. Use an 8 (or 10mm?) socket to remove the bolt that holds the guide into the transmission assembly. If the belt is tight you can engage the parking brake and it will give the belt some slack.
-When reassembling the transmission to the frame, lift the transmission about half way up and then set your belt back in the pulley track with the v side to the inside of track. Again use the brake to give it some slack. Once it’s in the track you can put the guide post back in and release the parking brake. If you don’t put the post in at this time you won’t have much working space when the transmission is back in its top spot.
-When you depress the spring to reinstall the washer assembly I’d highly recommend wearing some goggles. The more lighting you have to do this, the better. I found it easiest to use my strong hand to depress the spring and I used a long torque screw bit to start the threads on the screw. Once I was sure it had caught I cautiously removed my hand as slowly as I could then promptly tightened it by holding the pulley in place and tightening the screw with a small wrench. Take care not to cross threat it!
Hopefully this will clear up some points and help some people.

148 hrs also I did get it in without dropping the deck, I removed the back tire removed the spring, compressed the spring using zip ties larger ones at first to get started once I had it compressed I used the smallest ones I had and placed them in a cross pattern. Put the spring back on the rod places the washer and screw back on tightened it about half way clipped the zipties then tighten the rest of the way hope this helps.

Thanks for this video and all those who commented. I was able to fix mine without disassembly. However I was missing the washer and screw. The screw can be purchased at Home Depot for less than a dollar. The screw is m4x16 as identified. I ended up using a m4x20 because of the extra washers I used. For the washer I used a metal cap. Also bought two washers at Home Depot. They are called fender washers with the smallest hole but would fit in the metal cap and one larger one on the other side of the metal cap. After compressing the spring with a Vice and using zip ties to hold it, I put it over the spindle and tightened it down. Then, snipped the zip ties. So far so good.

OMG is right. I would have never known where to look on the mower for what was causing the problem. Saw the spring, didn’t notice that there was something missing from it. Found your post then it all came together, I also fount the cap washer under the mower. Tried something a little different on the repair. I do cabinet making as a hobby. So I took a wood clamp and compressed the spring, tied it closed with some nylon string. Placed it on the spindle with the cap washer as well as a new washer and screw. Tightened the screw, cut the nylon string and I was done. Never even removed the deck or the rear tire. COULD HAVE NEVER DONE IT WITHOUT YOUR HELP!!!

I've never seen anything like it the thing is literally a pile of junk

This isn't a John Deere problem, its the CVT transaxle, trade marked V Motion from General Transmission. The 105 is the ONLY John Deere to use this transaxle, however the exact same transaxle appears on many other lawn tractors in a variety of brand names. If buying a new John Deere all you have to do is to buy the 110 or higher, I have a D110 with over 400 hours on it, and a D130 with about 150 hours on it, nothing but normal maintenance. The easy way to tell the difference, at this time your General Transmission CVT has a black plastic housing, while all the Tuff Torq hydrostatics use a metal housing for the transaxle, you can easily see the transaxle housing looking at the back of the mower, its simple, don't buy any tractor with a black plastic transaxle.

Fyi if you dont want to drop the transmission. Get a longer screw and a nut at the store. Bottom the screw out until its snug, then tighten the nut down until the spring is fully compressed. You will need a screw thats twice as long as the origanal to get it to reach the threads without the spring being compressed. Also id go with a hardened bolt, 10.9 m4 .70.

This should really be a manufacturers defect. The forums contain many references to the D105 Auto transmission and this seems to be the major complaint. I have only 59 hours on my mower when this happened. Thanks to the video I determined the problem and you showed me how to fix it. Replacement parts are a sin. For a screw and two washers, the prices vary from $20.00 to $40.00 shopping Ebay and Amazon, and this for a poorly designed part to begin with. Shame on John Deere.

Isn't the internet great! Same problem, after 135 hours. Found the washer, but not the screw. Got a pair of replacement screws for 67 cents at Home Depot. M4-07x16mm. Tried to see if they would fit the threads, but found the old screw was still there! (But the new screws do fit.) Pulled out the spring and compressed it in a vise. Secured with 2 cable ties, but then it wouldn't fit back over the spindle. So I pulled out the top half of the pulley and compressed the spring on that with the vise, securing with cable ties. That fit back over the spindle fine, and I was able to get the original washer, plus one with a smaller hole, into place and put in the screw. Tightened it down and cut off excess cable tie. Worked like a champ! Until the screw came out. Will use Loctite this time.

Cost me a little over 100 dollars a few years ago. Comes with a new belt. This mower is a piece of junk. It’s got a plastic transmission. It’s plastic. No replaceable parts. That part is the only serviceable part. If you damage the inside of the plastic transmission you’re screwed. Very uneven cut as well. It’s entry level Deere.

Hi, Rafael Gonzalez! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. I have a question for you, do you have any suggestions for a broken bypass rod off the transmission on the D105? Before trying to move the mower tried to engage the bypass and it broke off the transmission, a plastic piece. Have you or anyone else been able to get the bypass rod to stay in drive position instead of roll condition? Thanks!
@3213_holsters
@3213_holsters 5 жыл бұрын
You can manually manipulate it by hand without the rod. The rod just makes it easier to do from an easy to find location. The mechanism is toward the front of the transmission on the left side. Also look into contacting John Deere to see if your mower is subject to the recall.

Take your spring put it in your bench vise compress it take 30 lb fishing line Aunt 5 to 6 complete loops around the sides of the spring snuggle up put a drop of super glue in various places making sure that your your lips are evenly spaced then unload the bench vise take the pressure off and you will have a compressor to Spring assemble it and then take your pocket knife and cut the twine if you feel the need to other whites run it in break it make sure to put thread lock on the screw holding the washer down that's how I do this without tearing it totally apart

Problem is that the top part of the variable pulley is worn out and dose not turn at the same speed as the shaft and the spring pressure on the cap holding the spring down will either ware out the hole in the cap / washer or back the screw out. Just replacing the screw will not fix it for long

The lower plastic part of that pulley gets rounded and worn as well and if that happens the screw will keep coming out even after you have fixed the washer issue. Sometimes you do have to put that whole kit in to fix this issue. It's not too bad though, got the kit for about 55 bucks. Use a high quality thread locker on the screw as well.

You bought the lowest end jd badged tractor to mow 11/2 acres, you got more problems coming. This mower will nickle and dime you as it is not built to mow that much with any longevity. The d series replaced the L series and went to a variator type trans. as opposed to a hydrostat to save money. I had the L130 which had 23hp kohler,48in hydro which is the highest end in this lower end series and as it did a good job on my 11/2 for 7 years I had to do alot of maint/mods. to keep it running. Btw, Husqvarna makes these along with Cub cadet and others.
