Tom Crawford gives us the history of two John Deere diesel tractors in his collection, the Model R, (the first diesel tractor Deere built), and the Model 80, the successor to the R. A total of 21,295 Model Rs were build during its five and a half year production run. About 3,500 Model 80s were built from 1955 to 1956.

We had an R on our dairy and potato farm. I was 8 in 1956. I used the R to double-corner 40, 60, and 80 A fields w a 14' tandem disk w a field cultivator following. It was all I could do to pull out the clutch, especially under load. It was a bear to turn. My brother plowed in 3rd gear w our 4 btm hitched plow. Dad bailed about 11000 bales of hay annually w it. Great tractor.

The 80 was named so to fit into "number series" models the 40, 50, 60 & 70 models that were built conconcurrently with it. The high revving V4 "pony engine" on the 80 always amazes onlookers when this large diesel tractor intially starts with this high pitched buzz!

Good looking tractors. I also have a JD 80 along with the JD 4 bottom plow. Both were bought at the same time from the same dealer. I got them from the original owner and have never left the town they were bought in to this day

Hand crank is great but the spark plug covers are hard to come by and if you get near the plug trying to close the compression valve it will light you up

Plug the computer scanner in and diagnose it.. Deere is being sued by Farmers for ignoring "Right to repair Federal laws".. Many boycotting Deere.

There is no federal right to repair law. One has been proposed, but not passed. It has more to do with consumer electronics than tractors. Even if JD gave their customers all the diagnostic tools and software free, their customers wouldn't have much luck using it, because they have neither the experience or training to do so, and it just ain't as easy as plugging in a code reader and replacing a sensor, which any JD tech will tell you. Bottom line, mechanics aren't farmers, and farmers arent mechanics, not in today's world.

@@6h471 I recall there wasa law? I have CAT et and still only dealer can do certain repairs. No reason to have ultra high tech on farm or construction equip. Before 1990s no such nonsense.

Deere took forever to bring out their first diesel. In fact they were one of the last to do it really. The R kind of took off for popularity, but it wasn't until the New Generation came out that the diesel took off for Deere.

Well now here's a breed of tractor we need to see a 1000% more of on here JD 2 cylinders were the back bone of farming of that Era and as far as I'm concerned there still the best choice hands down walking away!
