Necessity is the mother of invention. In the days before heavy articulated AWD tractors, ingenious solutions such as this where common in areas of large scale prairie farming, sadly, few examples survive. This tractor is one of the earliest prototypes of what became a series of 97 units built to answer a lack of heavy implement pulling power in central Alberta in the 1960's. Built by machinist Glen Munroe in Didsbury, Alberta, these unique tractors became known locally as "Munroe Hitches". This unit was the second built and has been lovingly restored and preserved by the Spreeman family as it was built. Power is delivered from two highly modified John Deer 830 diesel tractors run in tandem and delivering roughly 135 horsepower to the drawbar from both of it's 7.7 litre two cylinder engines. The Munroe Hitch eliminated both front axles, thus steering is provided hydraulically from a centre pivot, articulated with hydraulic rams with pressure provided from the front engine. All forward controls except starting inputs are slaved to the rear cab via a series of articulated linkages, allowing throttle, clutch and gear selection to be done from the rear operators platform. These tractors represented big power on the prairie until the advent of mass produced, company built articulated tractors over half a decade later in the mid to late 60's. Filmed at Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.

Allow me to clarify. This tractor was built like this from new, it was not done recently. 830's like these are somewhat rare now, they where not back then. Therefore, no rare tractors where desecrated to make this unique machine, this is how it has always existed.

I had a neighbor coupble 2 together in 1964. They did it themselves on the farm and had the local welder come and reweld everything again. This was in southern Alberta, south of Burdett.

So neither of these had a pivot axle? What about when it hit bumps or uneven ground? Would one of the four wheels come up into the air? Or is Alberta just so perfectly flat that it never came up as a problem in the first place?
@Rainhill1829
@Rainhill1829 4 жыл бұрын
I believe there is a small pivot under the front tractor that offered limited flexing in the middle, then again this unit is the second one built and was still in the prototype phase so small bugs still existed in the design.

Thanks so much for watching again, if TractorData.com is accurate (which it often is), she puts about 135hp to the drawbar. They road transport it between fields with only the front engine running, so they kept the clutches separate to allow one engine to have a snooze between fields.

More of that JD "2-cyclinder reliability" principle put to work in a great combination. That alone amazes me there are only 4 pistons in this beast. It appears the mechanical linkages and controls pretty much required this be operated from the rear. Was this unit ever used for any field / farm applications or strictly for proof of concept / show?
@Rainhill1829
@Rainhill1829 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a ton for watching, this unit spent years hard at work in the field even though it was only the second one built and the design was still being perfected, it worked just fine considering the untested nature of the concept.

At the time it was built there was no other options, the farmers in the area needed big pulling power for heavy tillage and no tractor manufacturer could accommodate them.

You would need a Flag Man at an intersection to tell you if is clear to pull out .. Or maybe there are no Trees in Alberta and you can see for miles .. At least it would cost a lot less then a new factory rig ..

@Rainhill1829
@Rainhill1829 6 жыл бұрын
Some large farms on the prairies had implements custom built that no tractor in existence at the time could pull, so they built these tractors to haul them. Tractor companies took notice and within a few years began to build their own and market them to the public, that is where the modern articulated units came from.

Production Ag has along history of becoming more efficient. Before 4wd drive tractors such as the stieger were available, or because a farmer didn't want to pay for one, they may build one of their own. This machine would probably do more in one day than two tractors and drivers could.
