Changing the deck belt on your riding lawnmower isn’t all that difficult. This is how I do it. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it my way-then hire it out. I cannot be responsible for your safety, that’s your job.

Larry, you are the man. I’ve switched this belt out on my x300 now 4 times. Your insight with putting a socket wrench in with no bit in that retractable bar was perfect. Yes I used a PVC 2 foot section for better leverage. I found it easier using my foot to step down on the pipe vs having it behind me. Big thanks for making this a million times easier.

Of all the KZfaq videos showing how to replace the drive belt on a 300 series John Deere, YOUR VIDEO IS THE BEST AT SHOWING ALL THE STEPS. I would suggest getting a helper for this project. The helper is particularly useful in moving the mower deck out from under the tractor and re-attaching the belt to the engine. Also, I used 2 by 4s under the mower to make it easier to slide out the mower from the under carriage.

Thanks Mr. Wilson. I certainly agree that a helper would be great. I’m use to working alone. The 2x4s is a great tip.

Thank you kindly for the guidance. I own an x300 and the belt popped in the middle of cutting three foot high grass. I followed your video and was done replacing the belt in under thirty minutes. Aside from a few over torqued spindle screws, the process was rather effortless. Thank you again.

Like the 190 comments before me, MANY THANKS!!!!!! I should have listened closer and took a note when you gave the belt number. It would have saved me two 45 minute trips to the mower shop. Even though they had a maintenance record showing which model tractor I have, they sold me the wrong belt the first trip. Using the pipe to extend the ratchet handle was brilliant, I would never have thought of it. Now I've got to see if you have any more video tips. You're a good man Larry!! New Subscriber.

Great video! My local dealer has a 4 month wait time for repairs and was no help. After watching your video and buying the belt I was able to replace the belt by myself, and I'm 72 years old! One tip I might add is using a box-end 15mm wrench to loosen/tighten the two pulleys at the rear to allow the belt past the guide pins. (I figured this out AFTER I scraped the back of my hand when the wrench slipped off the nut due to my lack of a deep-well socket, as you mentioned in your video.) I didn't need a long extension on the wrench to move the tension pulley.

Well it thought yesterday that since I was waiting on a new belt would just clean the deck while it was out, sharpen the blades again and grease up the spindles. (I had it hung on an overhead winch on an I beam in my shop, so it was easy.) When I put my grease gun on the left spindle the grease zerk pulled out.( the kind that mounted on the side of the spindle housing) Stripped at the factory I guess. Decided to unbolt it so I could replace the grease zerk and 3 of the 4 bolts that hold it to the deck snapped off. They refused to e-z out of the spindle housing. So rather than tap a new grease zerk and drill out the broken bolts I ended up buying a new spindle to go with the new belt. Sharpened the blades and just got it running again a few hours ago. Cuts good. Was going to just drill through the old broken bolts and retap it, but didn't feel like messing with it. The new spindles have the grease zerks in the top of the spindle bolt. I would have missed the notch on the retainer rod too, but your tip kept that from happening. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video Larry. I used it to replace the belt on X300 in France, The manual supplied with the tractor gives part no m154601 though, so I used that though I found it quite tight to get it on to the drive pulley. Two weeks later it broke again [the first one lasted four years]. After looking again at your video and looking up th JD parts catalogue and many suppliers in Europe and the US I've concluded your part [M154621] is the correct part [which is about 3ins longer] and the manual has confused the 38in deck with the 42in. Could explain why so many people seem to have very short lived belts on the 42c mower deck. No doubt I'll be studying your video again when the new belt arrives though in the days of corvid19 that may be some time. Two acres of grass could be fairly long by then! Many thanks for your work.
@LSatch
@LSatch 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that there is some confusion on parts list. They put at least two different motors in the X300 the year I bought mine. If you don't know the serial number when your looking for parts you can end up with the wrong thing. Thanks for watching and happy mowing. Stay safe. Larry

Great instruction! Your step by step instructions are the easiest on YOuTube for the x300 series mowers. The dealer will charge you big dollars and they keep your mower for weeks before they even start to work on it. I guess they are hoping you will just buy a new mower.

In order to get grease in the sealed spindle bearings you need to pump about 70-80 pumps with the grease gun. You will see grease coming from the top and bottom of the spindles. Someone on KZfaq tested with a different color grease and took the bearing out and seal out of the bearing and the new grease was inside.

Video was very useful. Belt was installed without any trouble at all. On the side note, could you explain what was the problem with your carb. Think I am riding in the same boat that you have ridden, except the part of paying the dealer lots of dough for repairs. I replaced the starter coils, new batt, voltage reg, drained gas tank and the mower still does just like you said yours did before the work on the carb. Thanks a bunch
@LSatch
@LSatch 4 жыл бұрын
Kenneth McLeod it sounds like the same rabbit trail I went down. In fact I’m sure I have a pair of perfectly good coils in my parts box. So, there is a small needle valve in the carburetor. It has a little rubber tip on it I think. Anyway, you can sit and let the mower idle for hours and then you move it and it might run for 10 minutes or 2 minutes then stop. The valve has dislodge and you get no gas. I didn’t rebuild the carburetor so I don’t know exactly where it is but my guy says it’s only a $10.00 part. Good luck, hope this helps, please let us know. Hey Larry - thanks for the video. I've changed our X300 belt a couple times in the past few years, but this last time it seized on something and split only after a couple weeks and I have to change it again. I appreciated you posting this - I may have missed something. Also, what part in the carb did they replace? Did they do it or did you do it yourself?I have exactly the same issue. The dealer said it was the seat cut-off but I don't believe that.

Michèle Jedlicka I went round and round with the John Deere dealer and mechanic for months and spent several hundred dollars. Long story short. I took it to a different mechanic, he knew exactly what it was. I don’t remember the name of the part but basically it’s a little needle value that regulates the gas flow. It’s a $10 part but they have to rebuild the carburetor to get to it. The part is about a half inch long with a rubber tip as I recall. Hope this helps. Happy mowing, Larry

Thanks a bunch for the video Larry. It was well done and very helpful. I’m curious what that $10 part in the carb was that fixed your issue with it only running for 15 or so minutes, I’m dealing with that issue now and have tried a bunch of fuel delivery fixes to no avail.

Deemn FSH my problem was a needle valve. I don’t remember the parts name but you need to get into the carburetor itself to change it. As I recall, it has a little rubber tip. It would idle for hours if not moving. Sometimes it would run long enough for me to cut the lawn, then sometimes for a few minutes. The valve would wiggle out of place. Hope this helps.

hate to tell you this. The bearings are sealed in the deck. So greasing the deck using the grease fittings is doing nothing at all. infact its hurting you cause there is no grease weep hole. So your just pushing your bearings. Otherwise great video. I recommend removing the spindles then removing the seals from the bearing and drilling a grease weep hole.

Thanks for the advice. My mower just turned 300 hours so it’s time for an oil change. Do you recommend any other maintenance at 300 hours?

@@LSatch i am weekend warrior too. I just found out about the bearings when mine seized up. Took it apart and found out the bearings where completely sealed. Then i talked with John deer and they said they all the decks come that way. So you can take a seal out an repack them or take the seals off and drill a small weep hole on the spindle so you no its packed with grease.

All I needed was a picture. Once I had the picture I was good to go. Interesting that you had a problem with engine performance and your shop gave you the run around. Or was it just incompetence. I needed a new fuel pump. Got a bunch a bull and finally I diagnosed it. I was going to repair it myself and on my way home after over a week of waiting they came and picked it up. They did exactly what I was going to do. Didn’t charge me for anything but parts. Cause it was under their repair warranty In these times I figured they hired some young gear head who could talk the talk but didn’t know what f he was talking about

Greetings from the UK - great video Larry. My dealer is 9 weeks in arrears. The belt slipped off recently and I managed to get it back on with some cussing and scrapes. I loosened the 13mm pulley guides to get the belt on but I didn’t know about the notches for the guides. I might not have fixed them back correctly as the belt broke 2 days later ( thankfully after a cut), I have a belt tension bar on my X300 so don’t need the steel brace to get it back on. I’m hoping the reason the belt broke ( it looked quite good but was 8 years old) is just due to a weak spot and possibly my notch issue. Great to see how to grease the bearings as well. Does this have to be a certain size grease gun? Anyway - I’m in my 70s and not allowed to do this sort of stuff - so when my wife is away for a day I’m going to tackle this as you make it look so easy! Thanks again - and we suffer the same poor dealer service over here as well.

Brian Herbert thanks for the kind praise. Don’t get me in trouble with your wife! 😄. I’m not sure about the grease gun size. Here in the US I think they’re pretty standard. If you’ve gotten 8 years out of it I think you are lucky, it probably just wore out. Good luck I hope it goes well and quick, before your wife gets home.

There are known issues with this mower deck shown in the video blowing off belts . It just happened to me after a week of owning this same mower, has this been an issue to you Larry ?
@LSatch
@LSatch 4 жыл бұрын
driggs51 I wasn’t aware of this. No it hasn’t happened to me yet. I’ve had this mower for, I think, 5 years, maybe 6. I’ve replaced the belt twice. The first one broke because the idler pulley froze up. The second time I’m not sure why but it was several years old and I had been abusing it, using it like a bush hog in the woods. I’ll post a follow up if it ever does fly off. Thanks for pointing this out.

Janice Mitchell I hope you get my response, had a hard time finding the question in the video. I guess you got the belt. I’m not sure which pulley you’re talking about but..... if the pulley has angle on the inside, a V groove fill the groove with the corresponding part of the belt. Continue weaving the belt around all the other pulleys without twisting it. If it doesn’t have a twist in it you’re good to go. Hope that helps.

Larry Satchwell hi, I got a John Deere OEM 42" Mower Deck Belt M154621. I have the same mower as you. But I broke another belt today so I was just still wondering if that’s the correct belt. That belt design is what we call an over engineered piece of garbage. All engineers are educated guesses and should have to assemble and disassemble every think they design that they call good for a year day in and day out. Over paid holes in payrolls + educated guess = engineer's
