Hello Angela: This is a tribute to Jacques Cousteau the famous oceanographer, his crew and his research vessel Calypso. John Denver went out on an exploratory cruise with them, and later created this song to commemorate the experience. Cousteau was also the inventor of the SCUBA tank and he is credited with broadening our understanding of ocean life.

I used to watch 'The Undersea World of Jaques Cousteau' every week as a teenager and was always fascinated. F.Y.i, David Crosby, an avid sailor and Graham Nash wrote a beautiful song called 'Critical Mass: To the Last Whale' which, along with footage obtained from the Cousteau Society they would sing at their performances. It's definitely worth checking out.

The Calypso was the ocean going research vessel Captained by Jacques Cousteau. There was a number of documentaries produced between the 60's and 80's that recorded the work of him, his sons, and the crew. The cool thing I remember is he had one of the first deep dive submarines in the world. Very interesting shows. I think they might have been produced by The National Geographic Society, but I'm not certain about that.

The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau was a popular show in the 1970s. Cousteau's vessel was called the Calypso.Cousteau and John Denver were friends and Denver went on some of the expeditions. When this song was popular, I dreamt of a career as a marine biologist... I loved the Cousteau shows and this song had a special meaning for me. It's still one of my favorite John Denver songs.

As many have stated, this song was a tribute to the Calypso, the ship owned by Jacques Cousteau and used as the centerpiece of the show "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" which aired back in the late 60's and early 70's. John Denver of course was big into nature which led him to become involved with and friends with Jacques. John Denver spent some time on the Calypso which then inspired him to write this song, about the ship and it's purpose. John Denver's intention was to inspire the feelings of a "Sea Shanty" type song, which I think he did very well. I can see people raising their beer steins and swinging them to the music much like the pirates of old.

As a child every week me and my dad would lay on the couch at the end of the day and watch Jacques Cousteau. I grew up in a BIG commercial fishing family and so we have a great respect for the ocean and the work Jacques Cousteau did to bring that love to millions who never would have seen anything it had to offer. His boat the MV Calypso was a marvel at the time and in tribute to his respect for Cousteau my dad named our biggest and best Crabber FV Calypso. This song was near and dear to us both. I am glad you enjoyed it.

When I was young, I watched Mr. Jacques Cousteau's many documentaries of his voyages of exploration which were presented by 'National Geographic'..... I dreamed of going on those trips... To me, this song that John penned honoring the man, his ship Calypso and her crew, is as wild and free as the oceans they sailed. That almost yodeling Mr. Denver does in this song is as beautiful as the sea. God's Peace to all here ✌

Angela, well finally a John Denver song you actually like. This is a tribute to Jacques Cousteau and his crew aboard the Calypso, a sea research vessel that explored the mysteries of our oceans. John and Jacques became life long friends and, as John was a noted environmentalist (long before that became a thing) he wrote this song. Another Top 10 hit for my favorite musical artist of all time. RIP JD, you are truly missed.

I am glad you found John Denver,,, would like to suggest a change of pace. Play The Bridgemen 2006 part 4. Its called Drum and Bugle Corps, played by people younger than 22. This is a reunion, so old timers. If you like this, check out other corps. Just a note, after 1980 or so, they started to change the rules, became more broadway and eventually no longer needed to use bugles but could replace with trumpets. Marching drill became dance, lost my zest then, so I watch the older ones. Hope you try and think you will enjoy!. Thanks for your time. one last thing John Denver is a poet who makes music, beautiful stuff, and fun stuff and serious stuff, ir Annie's Song.
