John Kavanagh is recognized as one of the best MMA coaches in the world. He is famous for being the coach of Conor McGregor and other well known fighters. I had the pleasure to meet him and ask for advice for my first amateur MMA fight which is in less than two weeks.

I love how you went from making aikido tutorials to asking arguably the best MMA coach in the world how to fight better in the cage, in the snap of a finger.

I'm not sure if you would refer to spending a majority of your life training in a martial art just to find out that it mostly won't work. To going into a few years of highly experimental training and seeking of advice, to connecting with and traveling across half the globe to train for six months in an intensive program, a "snap of the finger". It's a bit of a joke. It's like Kavanagh said, "I was an overnight success, it only took twenty years."

What a fast transition, in only four (or was it 6?) months, right? This is a beacon that with dedication and putting in the hours, anything is possible. (From another fellow Aikido life practitioner, to MMA practitioner) I will always love Aikido, I see myself as just adding on to my skill set and life journey.

Rokas, I've been following you for some time, and I just want to say how impressed I am by your humility and devotion to martial arts. I am currently in my own martial arts journey, with point style karate being my background, and you are a huge inspiration as I return to being beginner.

Congrats on your first fight. 1 small tip I can give (not that you asked lol) is to understand the person across from you is just as scared and anxious as you. They might put on a good facade but I promise they are. I like to look at my opponents chest right before we touch gloves to see if I can notice how hard their heart is beating. I know it sounds weird but there is something that gives a lot of confidence to visually see a person is nervous to fight you.

Great to see you doing well. Have you listened to "Myamoto Musashi's 5 Rings?" It takes 1 to 2 hours to listen on youtube. I think it is the single most important martial arts texts in history. It got me to mentally understand "winning and losing well" You can win a fight and still be "wrong or poor". On the flip side you can lose "well" as long as you fight with all your conviction and soul. In short winning or losing is not important. What is important is fighting with pure conviction or spirit. The book made no sense to me when I read it in my early 20's. 14 years later I realize that it was the book that got me to learn "The Way" so I am endlessly grateful for the book of "5 Rings"

Wow! Sage advice from a legend! You are going to do great. Remember your training and this quote from Bruce Lee, "Forget about winning and losing; forget about pride and pain. Let your opponent graze your skin and you smash into his flesh; let him smash into your flesh and you fracture his bones; let him fracture your bones and you take his life! Do not be concerned with escaping safely- lay your life before him!!" :)

You seem like a tall dude, if you have length advantage maybe use the jab alot, and if you are not experienced kicker keep them kicks low or they will grab you leg.

how about judo
@charlesmartel988
@charlesmartel988 5 жыл бұрын
Judo takes a long time before you can use it in a fight. MMA is six months to a year and you're a better fighter than any untrained scrapper. In the cage, you're doing MMA so you train at an MMA gym, no real options there. When you need fighting skills quickly, MMA is the solid choice. If you want to compete in the sport of Judo, do Judo and your parents usually make that decision before you are 10 years old. If you are raised as a Judoka from a boy and add striking later, of course you would be good but that's not an option for most people.

Why is it only 3 minutes long? Was he in a hurry or something? Awesome advice though, I'd say put it into practice physically. Start of with a strong/powerful technique, Teep to the stomach, flying knee, strong 1/2/calf combo, let him know you're not fucking about and that he's gotta earn your respect. Be aggressive, put up barriers for him to cross. And don't forget, cut angles! Think this mantra through, keep your defense flexible and your offense rigid. So be ready to defend anywhere, anyhow, but YOU ARE GOING TO KNOCK HIM OUT WITH *INSERT COMBO/MOVE OF CHOICE*. Choreograph the entire striking offense in the gym, including the opening BANG! move, this should also give you a good idea of what possible defenses you'll encounter. So, flexible/creative defense, rigid/game-plan offense, and open with a whopper move. Can't wait for this fight!!! Man i miss your hair though...
