Even though it's under such unfortunate circumstances, I am ecstatic to hear that Disney Animation and Pixar will be separate divisions again! I missed the distinction styles of writing/storytelling between Disney Animation and Pixar that was evident in the 1990's and 2000s.

i think Disney Animations problem is a bit different than the problem with the DCEU, Disney Animation DOES need producers.. the DCEU needs the executives to butt out, but that's been a long standing problem with the WB and their DC properties.. it pre-dates the DCEU. I think Disney will probably stick with their plan to move those creatives into those positions, i don't know how it'll turn out for them, i imagine it'll be more like business as usual for Disney & the movies will keep trucking along

Disney animation needs to continue strong, like it once was in the 90's With Great Visuals, Story lines, and Music (ie. The Ling King) None of this Pixar stuff that blew up and is all the rage nowadays.

I don’t think you can give much credit to the studio head for Star Wars numbers. It is clearly trending downwards, The Last Jedi was visually appealing but the movie is bad.

Interesting points! Producers are definitely important but don't forget that when it comes to Disney Animation, it was because of producers and executives that the studio hit it's bottom creatively with films like Chicken Little and Home on the Range until Lasseter became creative officer. It only makes sense to fill a creative position with a creative person... doesn't it?!

Denis Villeneuve may not have made an impact on the box office, but he made a long lasting impact in the cultural, audiencie and critics, without including more groups. He made a classic and he will be rewarded for that, he's an example like Ridley Scott, that came back with an amazing title after a box office failure, Legend, Thelma & Louise and Gladiator, even being movies separate by some time, made the audience and the suits recognize his talents, and the same will happen with Denis Villeneuve

actually as far as producers go, I would pick Darla Anderson: she has produced a lot of the greatest Pixar movies to date from *Finding Nemo* to *Coco* and she is incredibly involved in the creative process as she did travel alongside the directors and writers from *Coco* in order to make sure that the film was accurate in its portrayal so by all means as far as Pixar goes I would happily pick her

Considering how few good executive producers there are (who also aren't sexual predators), there's just not the talent in the industry to promote them. Hell, producer is usually the spot people "fail upwards" into, by virtue of having the right friends.

I agree that it might be best to draft in some producers from live action. It reminds me of something you said about Beauty and the Beast a while back - that the reason it arguably works so well as a translation into a live action film itself is because the original animated movie from the 90's was so richly animated - it was a story on par with any live action material you put up alongside it. Considering the leaps and bounds that animation has made since then (the attention to detail in films like Moana and Tangled, or Dreamworks' Rise of the Guardians and How To Train Your Dragon 2 (just look at the battle sequences!) ), I think some fresh talent from live-action backgrounds might help inspire a fresh, new direction. Imagine if we could have films that treated their source material as seriously or loyally as The Hunchback of Notre Dame, or Pocahontas, or Tarzan. Such a direction would be most welcome.

Choosing someone for WDA would be harder, but why not Clark Spencer. He at least has a strong history with the studio.

Conspiracy theory here...but I’ve always believed Disney purposely tanked John Carter once they knew a bid for Star Wars was in play...and they didn’t want anything to drive George Lucas into not selling the property so they kamikazed their own potential franchise

Even setting aside the creative success of Blade Runner 2049 and focusing exclusively on the business side of things, I don't think it's accurate to say Villenueve was hurt by it. He's directing Dune for Legendary and was offered a James Bond film that he turned down. Doesn't seem like he's hurting too much. I can't help but think that some in the industry recognized the fact that he created a cinematically stunning film that, although not as commercially successful as the studio may have wanted, was nevertheless a creative success that will ultimately outlast most of the box office juggernauts this year. Now, I'll certainly agree that a mainstream business model shouldn't be based off making films exclusively for their artistic merit -- yet, I think there should be room in that model for those occasions where merit outweighs the immediate monetary success of a film. The first Blade Runner was a box office flop after all, but I think most will agree it deserved making. Same follows, in my opinion, for 2049.

I'd never heard of Allison Shearmur before her recent passing, but everyone speaks of her as brilliant and significant*. Is there anyone else in the ether similar to her? Maybe that's the kind of person they should be looking for. *Though of course who would say bad things so soon?

I never liked Lasseter and the way he managed the company tbh, I've been lowkey hating him way before this happened. I really hope they bring someone who's willing to take more risks and make bold decisions, I love Disney and I've enjoyed their latest movies a lot but yeah, I really think they're getting pretty bland lately and there's so much amazing stuff they have decided to discard in order to make a more marketable movie, which i understand, but they need to find a balance between being artsy bold and original, and being business savvy.

Pixar have stopped being better than everyone else since 2009 after the release of UP. That was when they started doing a lot of misfires, I was really disappointed by Toy Story 3 and Inside Out has been the only one that has come closest to their greatest works, which all came in between 1995-2009.

I honestly really like these choices, a lot actually, all of them are very talented individuals that have worked within the company for years. I don’t get why you say Disney isn’t strong creatively nowadays, honestly this era has been one of the best for Disney and not only does the box office reflect that, but also the critical acclaim and the incredible innovations for animation they have made (the meander technique, rapunzels hair, Elsa’s snow effects)
