John's definition of "intermediate blues guitar player" is VERY different than my own.

Right? By this definition of intermediate, I have news for the guys at my local jam night.

yeah I don't think intermediate blues guitar player can play rhythm and lead at the same time and the rhythm is almost unmistakable for a looper.

The idea though is intermediate. He's just an expert blues player playing with it. Wrapping your mind around the idea is easier than pulling it off, lets say, you have just learned your first barre chords, the ideas here are not within that players world.
@alexfvcruz
@alexfvcruz 4 жыл бұрын
@@vincentveilleux1035 I believe he's just got an absurd amount of licks and phrasing techniques memorized and perfected on his muscle memory that nailing what he's thinking on his head almost second nature. the lead + rhythm definitely isn't intermidiate to an extent I think, specially not that much in the pocket (timing)

@@Pursuitofbalance when he reminds us of how important it is to learn more form singers, it's enough to get me off a big rut. Amazing stuff I wish I had his musical mentality and obsession with music.

Yeah I've been asleep musically when I put my hands on, kind of expecting to play something. He touched it in this by saying, what would YOU play? Instead of something you've heard before. Ive also noticed his practice method is like pick a key, and think of some sort of progression in that key. Then like start tapping to keep time(in the time you decide for the progression), and it all just kinda starts to sound more like music instead of whatever you'd(I) normally play!

I just stumbled onto this today. My gosh, John Mayer is so much fun to watch. He enjoys playing and yet humble enough to want to teach what he does. I learned so much throughout the video. “What if I make a mistake “. His comment, so what you made a mistake, just keep playing till you get it right is his encouragement. 😊. After watching the video and I went straight for my guitar and practiced from the enthusiasm I felt from watching him.

Dear John. I'm 65. The guys I liked best were Jerry Garcia and Dickie Betts. Of course many others - you know them better than me. But - as a kid, I used to daydream about just hanging out with Jerry and messing around on guitar. Of course that would never happen - the guy is Jerry Garcia fer cryin' out loud. So this video is cool - nice of you to do. Thanks. You took the lead (Ha - get it - took the lead!) and became the player I like to listen to the most a few years back. If you ever need a pedal steel player that hasn't played outside his bedroom in the last 40 years, I'm your man. Have a nice day.

The coolest part (and granted I only watched the first 15 min) that hes getting at is to know your pentatonic Modes. You can go to the dominant mode or Ionian mode in either direction from the minor pentatonic. Then you can get really creative, and add in Dorian, Phrygian scale shapes where the standard minor pentatonic scales resides, of course being able to drop into their actual respective positions. Great stuff that he’s hitting on

Sometimes someone comes along and explains to you what you've been doing for a while, maybe years, and your brain goes "now I get it!' I couldn't quite figure out the Equator analogy, but it does sorta clarify things. It's still pentatonic-y to play on the 'low' side of C on the third string, and it seems like there's one more fret to deal with, and thus the possibility to play a wrong note, but it did change my thinking. After going back and forth on the fretboard between the two positions, my fingers were like 'yeah, we got this.'

You guys would be amazed at the shapes and patterns that open up when you get too into Derek Trucks and switch to open E exclusively. It’s been almost ten years for me and I haven’t looked back and never regretted it for a second. It makes the fretboard even more “linear” than it already was in standard and once you get an idea of what’s going on it all clicks so much better. I’m not even as into Derek as I used to be but I’ll never give up open E

I read an interview with Jeff Beck years ago where he said he doesn’t usually do focused practice, that what he often does is just watch TV with a guitar on and listen for music passages and then try to spontaneously play the same line. Ditto for commercials. It’s great ear training and also fretboard training. Anything that works for Beck is worth investigating.

I love it. Thanks, John. Nice to help me get thinking another way. So, what your saying is, play below the equator and make tasty decisions.

Shit I knew he was good but had no idea he could just riff off the rip like THAT!! That was impressive. Been playing 26 years and never had endless ideas to play like that. Like some of my favorite bands, I think "how do they have so many different and infinite musical ideas"? Guess that's why they're famous and I'm watching their videos 😂. This was great. Definitely going in the saved file lol.

Its hard to believe this great artist did not know to play in shape 5. Its so simple I thought I was missing something. I have always used it as much as shape 1.
