The Heartland typically refers to the American midwest, mostly small rural towns surrounded by corn, wheat & soybean fields where the nearest large city is generally 2, 3, even 4 hours of driving away. John Cougar Mellencamp is the small town boy who grew up playing rock & roll and thinking about life in the big city. He's from Seymour, Indiana about 40 minutes north of where I live, and after his wild rock career and adventures traveling the world singing, he returned to southern Indiana to settle down and enjoy the small town life. He has lots of great songs for you to discover like Pink Houses, Small Town, Hurts So Good and more, and his videos are always fun to watch! Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂

One of my favorite quotes about Mark Twain says alot about our youth & feeling on top of the world. “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

Hi guys, great reaction as usual. John Mellencamp (or John Cougar) is an American singer-songwriter very linked to rural tradition, his folk-tinged rock often speaks of common people and for this reason he is much loved especially in areas far from big cities. If you would like to discover something else of his music, I would like to point out "We are the people", "Paper in fire", "Pink Houses", "Small town" and "Human Wheels".

I love this song. It came out when I was 15-16 years old and just “chomping at the bit”to get my adult life started and now, to look back on life from my perspective makes me understand the words in a much deeper way. Makes me wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then. Pink Houses is another huge hit by John Mellencamp. I also really liked his version of Wild Night.

Miss Dominica, you are so right about social media. A local radio host told the story of her and her husband going out to dinner one Sunday. She said there was a family at a table all with their heads bowed. She said to her husband, "Oh, look at that family praying before their meal. How lovely." As they got closer, they saw they weren't praying at all. Every one of them were looking at their phones. This was such a great reaction. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you both!

Oh my, so glad someone put you on to this artist. He's amazing, so many great songs. When you're ready for another, one of the best vibes of all time was his song "KEY WEST INTERMEZZO (I SAW YOU FIRST)" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNJ9g7yorL2wk30.html. It's one of those songs that you have to get up and dance to. His cover of "WILD NIGHT" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z9SAg7WCyrrchI0.html is just as infectious, so since you'll already be in dance mode you might as well listen to them back to back, right? Seriously, though, his music is top shelf. If you're ever going to go down a rabbit hole, this is a great one.

🎉 John Cougar’s first hit was, “ I Need A Lover Who Won’t Drive Me Crazy,” 1978. (Maybe you should compare it to Pat Benatar’s rendition?!?) Also, John did a song called, “Ain’t Even Done With The Night,” 1980…you’ll ❤ that, too.

I saw John Mellancamp in concert in 1997. It was an amazing show, he is one of those non-autotune artists who still sound like the recording in concert. Everything was great but to get a quick cigarette break, he stopped in the middle of his biggest song "SMALL TOWN" and let his keyboard player improvise a rap break, which confused people no expecting more than rock and folk rock. As soon as he took 5 or 6 drags off his cig, (he was smoking it on the stage, off to the side) returned to the song and no more rap the rest of the show.

Great song, classic Mellencamp. Mellencamp had a run of hit albums, was a great writer and performer. Maybe still is, I'm out of touch. I'd recommend trying the first 2 songs from Uh-Huh album: Crubmlin Down and Pink Houses. Two of his best. Crumblin Down is real Stonesy rocker, one of Mellencamp's talents. And Pink Houses is another wistful insightful song, like this, as good or better I think personally. But he had a lot of great songs (Rain On the Scarecrow, Pop Singer, Paper In Fire, lots of deeper cuts too).
