I can’t speak on the addict side but I worked for a company that had the whole recovery package, from detox to half-way house. Only people with the means to afford the program went there, so you can imagine which professionals I saw walking in through those doors, and ofc the children of those professionals.

The hard part about getting clean, is learning how to enjoy life without substances to help you feel. I used to do coke and play video games all night and I’d be chatting with everyone, yelling etc. Now it’s a struggle to socialize most of the time. It’s definitely improved over the years, but it’s definitely a hard transition. But it’s worth it, and it dramatically improves your personal life. Im an er nurse and we had a 10 year sober from opiates come in with a pretty bad injury in pretty severe pain (i dont remember the injury) but refused all pain meds because he was so worried about relapse. I felt so awful for him but there was also some pride there that he knew enough about himself and his history and was making choices he believed would benefit him beyond that moment. I can’t imagine how difficult getting and being sober must be.
@ginao6810
@ginao6810 Ай бұрын
From my own experience, and the fella in your story, getting sober from opiates is more painful than major injury. Pain isn’t the worst of it though. While you are in A LOT of pain, the things that linger in my mind 10 years later are *the muscle spasms of restless legs (you know when someone tickles you by poking your ribs, it’s that sensation in your thigh muscles, without stopping for weeks at a time. *A ceaseless irritation that could only be calmed by pulling my hair out in chunks. *Nausea - like the worst hangover you’ve ever had. *And despite the fact that every neuron in your body is on fire and you’re exhausted, you CANNOT SLEEP. So you’re awake for every second of it. So I’m not being flippant when I say that I’d rather an unmediated broken limb than to detox again. That would just be the pain, not the other wild, competing symptoms. Don’t do the hard drugs, kids. And if you need hard drugs to feel normal - go find out why that is instead of just taking the drugs.

Recovering addicts fear that a smell of what they used or the sight of someone else doing what they used to do will drag them right back to the messy pile of sh! t they were before. They spend every day fighting the temptation to go right back there for the feeling they crave but they know (when sober /clean) that it could kill them and that they're a better person now. The problem is the body still fracks the mind up and tells you how much your missing it. Never underestimate the strength of character it takes ti remain clean.

What's crazy is I never got addicted to cocaine. Used all kinds of drugs in my 20's, it it was always just fun. Then I slowly got a taste for alcohol to the point I kept drinking and it wasn't even fun anymore as the days went by. Like, I knew I wasn't having fun, hated spending the money, disappointed in myself and really couldn't stop the impulse to get messed up. I would limit myself how much I bought because I'd never drive drunk and that got me to cut back because I'd have no booze. Then one day I'd drive drunk to get more. It was a slow road to scale back. Quit for a year or so, and now I still drink every other day. It's not cool.

I used to have a drinking problem which was that once I started I had to keep going until I passed out or blacked out or otherwise went unconscious. I resonate with the sentiment of not drinking like other people. Say my friend orders a lovely glass of red wine to go with her meal…but when she’s done eating she’s also done drinking and friend is about to leave half a glass of wine on the table and my alcoholic brain thinks to itself, wow that’s such a waste of good grapes; I should really finish that for her.

I was the exact same way for 10+ years. blackout every single night. never could just have 1 or 2. usually a 12 pack and a pint of 100 proof. if I could make it 7 days... it was a lot easier. finally completely quit around Thanksgiving. havnt touched a drop other than some nyquil once when i got covid. went through some tough times and almost bought a case... but I talked myself out of it. had a dream a few nights later where I downed a couple shots and in the dream when I set the glass back on the counter I woke up wide awake and super pissed at myself. realized it was a dream... and havnt craved any since. I'm all about letting things be legal and letting people do their own thing... but there is zero reason why alcohol is legal and weed ain't.

As a sex addict I get this, I’m anxious about having it because if I do I suddenly have very low expectations for a guy, I just want it constantly, I get angry and moody and sometimes even upset if I don’t get it, I’d actually rather go with out. It was my coping mechanism for anger and sadness it was an unhealthy emotional release. But at the time I didn’t think I had a problem I just thought I had an excessively high sex drive.. now I stay on antidepressants for the pure fact it dulls it down a bit and I know that’s not the solution. Addiction in any respect is not good.. I became rather gym obsessed and ended up going 4-5 x a week 3-4 hours a time and would come home 6 am and be back up in the morning. I became way to skinny for comfort and I didn’t see it. Everting in moderation!

Honestly what Theo said is absolutely true. I've had substance abuse issues for a while, thankfully sober now. But smelling a certain drug that you've been hooked on is like getting a fishing lure hooked into your nose and yanked that direction, like your brain IMMEDIATELY goes bananas. Like smelling your favorite food while starving but times 100 and bunches of memories flowing back. Depending on where you're at it can be a relapse risk but where I'm at now it'll just scare me tbh

"I don't like them the way other people like them" is exactly how I settled with the fact I have a drinking/drug problem. Where I grew up, binge drinking recreational coke/speed use was everywhere and was just a normalized behaviour, and even then I was very aware that I didn't use like people around me did. I'm still struggling, but it was a big reason for me moving out of where I was and to a new country, and that definitely gave me a start in recovery.

the way john presents his addiction is very relatable to any of us addicts/ex-addicts and we all understand what they mean but someone who hasn't touched drugs will never understand the way it all works but this is a good insight into 2-3% of what drugs and addiction is like but you can never really understand, had so many counsellors who couldn't relate as they never touched them, so they never could fully help me as in my brain 'they have no clue what this is like' and thats what happens to so many. Thats why im now a qualified counsellor and trying to get into the substance misuse help/addictions sector. We can't have only non-addicts telling addicts how they are meant to be feeling and how their book tells them how it could be for them

@@IlikemyprivacyNN With methylphenidate, it's almost impossible to have a fatal overdose unless combined with other hard drugs or alcohol. I think that's why it shouldn't be Schedule II as well, since that class also includes methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl.
