Lyrics:
We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa wah oh wha oh
Many years ago along the Illinois-Wisconsin border
There was this Indian tribe
They found two babies in the woods, white babies
One of them was named Elizabeth
She was the fairer of the two
While the smaller and more fragile one was named Marie
Having never seen white girls before
And living on the two lakes known as the Twin Lakes
They named the larger and more beautiful Lake, Lake Elizabeth
And thus the smaller lake that was hidden from the highway
Became known forever as Lake Marie
We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa wah oh wha oh
Many years later I found myself talking to this girl
Who was standing there with her back turned to Lake Marie
The wind was blowing especially through her hair
There was four Italian sausages cooking on the outdoor grill
And they was sssizzlin'
Many years later we found ourselves in Canada
Trying to save our marriage, and perhaps catch a few fish
Whatever came first
That night she fell asleep in my arms
Humming the tune to 'Louie Louie'
Aah baby, we gotta go now
We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa wah oh wha oh
Whoa wah oh wha oh
The dogs were barking as the cars were parking
The loan sharks were sharking the narcs were narcing
Practically everyone was there
In the parking lot by the forest preserve
The police had found two bodies
Nay, naked bodies
Their faces had been horribly disfigured by some sharp object
I saw it on the news
The TV news
In a black and white video
You know what blood looks like in a black and white video?
Shadows, shadows that's what it looks like
All the love we shared between her and me was slammed
Slammed up against the banks of old Lake Marie, Marie
We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa wah oh wha oh
Whoa wah oh wha oh
Whoa wah oh wha oh
Peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Ahh baby, we gotta go now
Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

I grew up on the lake hes singing about. I never knew the history, i just found this song. Yknow, i always thought the lake was somewhat haunted. People died on the Chain of Lakes all the time, but Marie was the one where they fished up body parts of a jet skier who was chopped up beneath a boat. Marie was the one id heard about tubers drowning in after they fell into the water every other summer. Lake Marie is the lake that drowned my father. I suppose ill have to be sure to go home again, and stand by those peaceful waters and hear this song for him.

I agree about this song...'A masterpiece with twists'...but what are the twists exactly, at the end?...I am stumped....I listened to it a few times and still didn't come to a solid conclusion...What do you suppose the ending is about?....I thought they must have committed suicide together......Their way of 'saving their marriage'...?.....'We gotta go now'?......It's gotta be that......The waters are peaceful, so it wasn't a storm...or were they attacked by intruders...?.....That makes sense....The narrater is telling the story, so did he survive?....Were the two bodies the sisters?......Secretly in love with the same man, so they fought?......Possibilities.....Or is it supposed to be up the the individual to decide for themselves?....Ok, somebody help me figure it out, tee..... Stumped.....I remember parts of this song from way back, though......Cheers....

Eden Black Throughout the song Prine sings phrases from the 60’s rock classic, “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen. “Oh baby” and “We gotta go now” are all through the song. The lyrics of “Louie Louie” were famous for being impossible to discern and there were parts that sounded quite vividly sexy. This made it an even greater dance song!! “3/4 of the way through the song he sings about his wife nestled up close to him humming a few bars of “Louie Louie” as she is falling asleep. They’ve just had sex. “up against the shores of Lake Marie” a line he sings earlier when he first meets her at Lake Marie and they have sex “up against the shores of Lake Marie.” Both times, the line is sung with intensity and a kind of staccato beat, (clearly the climaxing part of their love making.) Both times he follows with “Oh Baby!” I never got a sense of them committing suicide or anything close to that. There is the part where the two people are found dead in the woods near Lake Marie. Their bodies are so disfigured that they can’t be identified. And in the beginning of the song the two little white girls are found by people from an indian tribe in the woods by Lake Marie. So that’s my take on this oh so beautiful song written and performed by the great John Prine. I sure do miss him and I hope he is “standing by peaceful waters. ☮️❤️☮️
@philipopruesse4259
@philipopruesse4259 4 жыл бұрын
@@maryannbrown5762 I am not sure that the "aw baby" and "we gotta go now" have anything to do with Louie Louie reference. JP used the phrases in other songs as well. there are several disconnects in this song. For example, how did the Indians know that the names of the 2 babies they discovered? if there were cars at the scene of the crime seen on the 6 o'clock news, the 2 bodies were definitely not the bodies of the babies discovered by the Indians. maybe the 2 bodies were the singer and his sweetheart and this is what JP meant about "their love was slammed"."I guess poetic license could allow the singer to sing about his own tragic death. maybe we shouldn't try to read into this masterpiece too much. but every time I hear JP shout our "Marie!" it feels like a knife going through my heart. I guess great art is something that everyone can relate to in their own way. and this is great art. JP was naturally gifted. nothing methodical or studied or calculated. He wrote his best music almost unwillingly under time pressure.I think he avoided it because it was such an intense experience and he always feared that it would not be liked. it just came out of him like a geyser. ......so everyday simple, but unbelievably sensitive.

Many years ago on a long late night drive from the Kingdom of Kerry to West Cork I heard this song for the first time & it is now an eternal black & white movie in my head - and you know what black & white looks like, shadows. Made it ‘home’ safe to Baltimore transfixed by the story & the mood. Ended the night staring out onto peaceful waters, happy to have chad the privilege. Magic man & tragic song.

Saw John 3 times last year with my wife, who found John 45 years ago in a little joint in Chicago while she was 19 years old, in nursing school. I met her 2 years later, and have been a fan as well ever since. Somehow he just gets better and better every year. Saw him a few weeks ago in Toronto. Simply phenomenol.

Sometime in the early 2000s my wife and I saw John Prine perform this song at Berklee College in Boston. I suspect it was one of the first times he performed the song. It was a small auditorium and I believe some, if not all, of the players with him were Berklee students. The lead guitar player was incredible. He was a kid. He played an incredible bit at then end of the song, and I believe he went on to be the musician in the gray suit that played many more concerts with Prine. The kid sure could play the guitar and I think Prine was surprised at the Berklee concert. Life is interesting.....

Is it as weird as it feels to be answering a question from three years ago that was almost certainly meant to be rhetorical? Yes? Ok. But have you ever heard of a fellow named John K Samson? Brilliant, funny, thoughtful singer-songwriter from Winnipeg. Used to front a band called the Weakerthans. Has dropped Mr. Prine's name often when asked about his influences. A (low-res, muddy-sounding, and incomplete) video of him covering Rocky Mountain Time exists on KZfaq, or used to, at least. He isn't what you would call prolific (hasn't released a full album since 2016) but he put a single out a couple years ago called "Fantasy Baseball at the End of the World." Some other song titles of his are "Letter in Icelandic from the Ninette Sanitarium" and "Psalm for the Elks Lodge Last Call." One lyrical trait of his that clearly shows JP's influence is the anthropomorphizing of inanimate objects (JP: "bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down and won, and it was 12 O'clock before I realized I was havin' no fun." JKS: "there's a sink full of bottles and cutlery, and the car's got a list of complaints.") I'm rambling here. Oh baby. I gotta go now

Loved Prine years and years ago I went to visit my brother from another mother up in the Chicago area. He was a music nut like me. I ask where we're going to catch live music. I think he new everyone within a 100 mile radius of wherever he was at. So he says let me call a guy.. getting off the phone he names some small club his buddy he called managed the place and said you 2 need to hear this guy..some postman was turning out some fine tunes. I thought we'd go to a blues club but after hearing Prine and him sittin with us a little while I was dadgum impressed. Not just his music he was just a nice humble man. Sure wish we had smartphone's back then. I got to meet Buffet in very similar consequences in a little place in Atlanta. But anyways we all get old.
