Came back from Viet Nam in 1970. Had fourteen years of drugs and divorces. In 1984 was accepted into the pilot program for PTSD at the Chicago VA hospital. Spent most of a year there. Life has been a lot better since. Always said this album was the soundtrack of my life.

Way to go getting help for a very real problem-don't worry if you need to go back for tune-ups...I'm so sorry you had to go and about all that happened. What a freaking mess. Nevertheless, you are breathing--so where there is life there is hope. John did a LOT of dudes from that era and also that place good. Did me good, too-a lot. Stick around, find something you like, I hope and keep on keeping on!

Using milk creates as a dinner table. Then having to raise two boys on her own. Working like dog in factories. I lost her almost 3 years ago. First heard John Prine on a friend's cassette player while in college late 70's. I listened to all kinds of music but never heard of this guy. Who is this?? Could not believe what I was listening to. Some kind of folk/country prophet or something. All these years later, he's still not on the radio-- not even Deeptracks, etc... Maybe it's a Twilight Zone kind of thing. Only for select ears that can really hear what he's saying.

Yeah, I hear you. Prine just has a way to cut right down through our soul, down to the naked part that still aches,… forever. I get hooked into it; Time for me to bathe in it for a while but then I have to move on. Since music is part of this, a good way out is to move on to some Leo Kottke. His love of life, and his way of telling a story, fun and music is a sure way to bring me back to a brighter side of life any time. Phil

John and I were born just 8 days apart (he was the older one); at age 74, a guy kind of knows FINAL EXAMS are coming up. Life, Ive found , is so much better at the last few years than the first few; JP's music so often provided the Inner Resources to let Rough Times pass. His songs bring me still close to the way I feel sometimes praying to God. RIP, J P You are eternal.

Its because he remembers to keep his empathy alive through out it all. They are not just stories but he is relating or allowing us to relate, it blows my mind how many phrases I have heard him say that I have never heard before but I instantly understood them. Even if he is singing with some superiority its from the side of all vs the few. He had the foresight at least to see history's battles and being on the right side, instead of being angry and scared he was ready for change and took it on the chin.

Well rest in peace J.P.. Had the pleasure of seeing John Prine when I was just a young girl, 9 or 10 I believe. His band broke down in my little town, Matapedia Quebec. Now I'm sure no one knows where that was even Mr. Prine at the time, came to our school and performed a few songs. Of course being so young we didn't know who he was, for me was Instant crush. That's how I found out what my whole name meant. He was telling us,by the meaning of my name, he did tell me that I was very special. I believe he was just trying to make a little girl with 1 and a half thick glasses feel good. When I grew up ended up being a huge fan before remembering the young man singing dear Abby when I was so young.

I was living in Louisiana and fresh out of high school when John Prine, Randy Newman, Bonnie Rait and a few more folks put on an outdoor concert. I was hooked on all three immediately. John had music that was controversial at times. Randy Newman went on to write music for movies and TV shows after he stopped touring. His music was not as controversial as John's so he got more air time. I'm not sure how Bonnie Rait fit in with this group but she also went on to have and still does have a fantastic career. Rest in Peace, John Prine. You are still remembered.

I'm still in mourning for John and his voice is still in my head. I am a lover of social reailism, a poet and publisher of the Blue Collar Review, a journal of progressive Working Class literature. As such, I wrote this poem for John -- and for all of us who love and miss him -- Dear John Bury my heart in Muhlenberg county in a motel in Shreveport in the jungles of East St. Paul A poet who sang the soul of a better Americana jokes and tears in the nitty-gritty realism of life's long hard road Bury that part of our soul this soul that listened and sang along for years and years "that flow by like a broken down dam" Damn your soulprint still so large your voice so widespread your presence remains as if you're still among us and you are.
