There is a sweet, short documentary here somewhere about Steve Goodman, featuring interviews with John Prine, Arlo Guthrie, Kris Kristofferson, Steve's widow, and his manager. Kristofferson has to stop talking at one point, because he starts crying. I was blessed to see Steve perform at the Moore Theater in Seattle in the mid-70s. He played solo for three hours, with one little break. What a treat that was!

Lyrics All the snow has turned to water Christmas days have come and gone Broken toys and faded colours Are all that's left to linger on I hate graveyards and old pawn shops For they always bring me tears I can't forgive the way they robbed me Of my childhood souvenirs Memories, they can't be boughten They can't be won at carnivals for free Well it took me years to get those souvenirs And I don't know how they slipped away from me Broken hearts and dirty windows Make life difficult to see That's why last night and this morning Always look the same to me And I hate reading old love letters For they always bring me tears I can't forget the way they robbed me Of my sweetheart's souvenirs Memories they can't be boughten They can't be won at carnivals for free Well it took me years to get those souvenirs And I don't know how they slipped away from me Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: John Prine

I never knew who John Prine was until I heard of his passing. I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to music. I have been exploring John's music for the last 4 weeks and I can say that he, without a doubt, has become my most favorite song writer of all time. Such simple song structure with such a powerful message. I'm sad I never got to see you perform John. I hope you are having your vodka and ginger ale next to peaceful waters.

A musical void that may never be filled, sad, yet powerful, sweet, and somehow strong. I used to play Johns songs in bars back in the 70's as a much younger man when not many knew of him. Incredible power for a solo acoustic performance. So much rhythmic feeling for an unaccompanied guitarist. And one of the most genuine, heartfelt love songs I can think of. I love this tune because it displays more than possibly any other that context can make a world of difference. As is, it comes off as a well-written but sort of intentionally cheesy love song----but when you understand that Goodman had terminal cancer and wrote this song for his wife (and high-school sweetheart) to remember him by, it suddenly becomes one of the sweetest, most authentic songs I can think of. He didn't care if it was a little sappy, he just wanted his wife to know he loved her more than anything, and that he was more than willing to look a little silly to express that love. RIP Steve Goodman

Chicago was responsible (I think that's the right term:)) for John Prine and Steve Goodman. How lucky we were.

Consumate, or liberating, or consequential, or heartfelt, or enduring, or reflective, or a million other descriptions to describe John's music. They a're all inadequate and under valued. John was the MAN!. He wrote it and it was true.

John and Steve, what a pair, came up togrther. Best friends. Steve makes it sound like there is a small orchestra up there. What a great guitar player. Two of the greatest talents to come out of Chicago. Their music speaks for itself and will for generations to come. Good job guys, thanks for the souvenirs.

Steve Goodman drove so many talented people to be better than they would otherwise be, yet was passed over for folk recording stardom - whether by discrimination, oversight or his own choice, I don't know. His death was a tragedy; but his life was an inspiration and a celebration. One of the greats. John is still with us, thank dog. Send him some love if you can. He's still younger than Mick Jagger, but looks like he needs a hug these days. Drop him a line and tell him how fucking great he is! Thanks, translatesslowly!

"I hate grave yards and old pawn shops, cause they always bring me tears. Can't forgive the way they rob me of my childhood souvenirs." Classic John Prine lyrics, brilliant in their simplicity, connecting universal images with deep reflection on the things that matter in life. I love this guy's music.

Two of the most talented and creative geniuses we have had the gift of being on the planet the same time. I know when I need to be uplifted and/or just to relax and daydream, I put on my John Prine/Steve Goodman playlist. I'm a lucky gal. Joy abounds with them.
