Right. Only the slightest difference between the Fender here and the Ibanez on the original....and that difference isn't even the instrument... it's effects and settings. Sco is one of the all time greats.

Dennis is still my favorite drummer, and I really play a mix a thrash metal, classical, and what little jazz fusion I've learned from listening to players like John. But those funky drums and insanely sold grooves of Dennis' are something else. He plays poly-rhythms like other drummers play straight time. It's so natural sounding, like 7 over 4 is just the most obvious thing in the world. I wish it was for me. lols

Sorry, but the P-bass tone just doesn't cut it on this song. Gary Grainger and Dennis playing this together will never be outdone. Gary and Dennis playing grooves like this together was the reason I started playing bass when I was ~14. During the summer, I would go to Takoma Station in D.C., stand outside by the side door which would be open during the hot summer, and listen to them groove together from about 6 feet away from them. I'll never forget the two men that inspired me and changed the course of my life when I was just a kid.

I've listened to robben ford for years, not much exposure to Scofield until today. Now wonder how long robben has been listening to Mr John.
@zenobardot
@zenobardot 3 жыл бұрын
I think they overlapped briefly in Miles' band around 1985? They were born 10 days apart, and Robben hit the national scene a few years ahead of John. John started becoming a "guitarist's guitarist" around 1977, and Robben probably got some exposure to John at some point in the late 1970s. John was almost certainly aware of Robben's work with the L.A. Express and others in the 1970s when John was just starting out with Billy Cobham.

The hired gun with the Strat is really good at complimenting Scofield and letting him shine. At least I assume he's a hired gun since he's not named in the description. His name is Avi Bortnick by the way.
@zenobardot
@zenobardot 3 жыл бұрын
Well, almost all of Sco's backing musicians have been hired guns, save perhaps Joe Lovano who was/is a marquee name himself, but Bortnick was a founding member of the 2001-2003 era "John Scofield Band" and appeared on the Uberjam and Up All Night records, and came back for the reunion of that band in 2013. So it's not a fleeting relationship, exactly, by the standards of Sco's working bands.

On the other hand, this shows that John's "Blue Matter" band could have been pretty killer if he'd used a really creative rhythm guitarist instead of a keyboard player. But in the mid-1980s, that "DX7 sound" was $$$$. John made the most of it, but I don't particularly miss it.

there is thematic material in cantloupe Island and this Tune that's alike just the last 3 tones of Herbie's Tune and maybe the 23 for last tones of scofield's tune Inver noticed it just now by listening...(I guess Scofield listened to Herbie's composition and without knowing maybe reproduced(Crimptomnesis=reproducing material you are not aware of) I don't believe he did it on perpose, than it would be a deed of Renaissence, quoting eachother for the better of the Art, and let'be honoust Blue Matter is an astonishing composition maybe a bit mor complex with all respect that Herbie's Cantaloupe Island(but it's Beaty is Well Known still played often composition, I gues a bit more often than Blue Matter(LOL))

@zenobardot

I don't have any direct knowledge, and they could be anything, but supposedly the guitar is a K-Line (with an Ibanez sticker on the headstock). Chris Kroenlein (who is K-Line) makes vintage-sounding pickups, though early on I think he was using 3-rd party pickups like Lollars. Long story short, it's possible Sco is using K-Line pickups here, but some super-fan may know more.

@@zoso2809 Why not? Out of a decent guitar in its core (which doesn't have to be expensive at all) a good luthier or a guitar tech can make you a stage-ready instrument that can withstand hours of playing even under the stage lights. We get carried away sometimes with expensive equipment thinking it is the only way to go... And of course, it is very who plays the instrument and how well he/she knows it. There are no perfect instruments. You need to get to know your instrument.
