Audio excerpted and condensed from TonyMacklin.net, 1975.
Interview conducted by Tony Macklin. Audio interview originally published on February 15, 2009 on tonymacklin.net.
The interview was in Wayne's home in Newport Beach, California. Published in the Summer 1975 issue of Film Heritage.
"Hell yes, I'm a liberal. I listen to both sides before I make up my mind. Doesn't that make you a liberal? Not in today's terms, it doesn't. These days, you have to be a fucking left-wing radical to be a liberal. Politically, though ... I've mellowed." - John Wayne, 1973

The more things change, the more they stay the same. This is the never-ending struggle of humanity. A need for order versus a tendency toward chaos. Our civilization's oldest stories spoke of this same scenario, though the language was different.

Exactly, I've been complaining about this since then, without any success. If you're a man and complain, you're chastised for not being a man. Well, I've been sucking it up since the 70's and It's about time the bashing of the christian white male be put to rest. Else, the demolition of society will continue until there is nothing left to save.

Being conned is truthful, the funny part is that a large portion of Americans are falsely accusing the wrong side. Does this (fake) president have a history of conning people? Any instances of being a crook? It's as if his supporters never heard of him until 2016. It's simply amazing that he can trick so many so easily, and at the same time make fun of them for falling for it. But hey, keep "thinking" for yourself.

@mar00n There is no difference between communism, socialism, and "democratic" socialism. I recommend you do a search online for the ‘Intercollegiate Socialist Society ’ and you will find from the early 1900s in the USA [c.1905] this group started with about 100 Marxist supporters to make plans to infiltrate every aspect of life in the USA with the goal of wholesale socialism/marxism. Although this socialist group has had a few name changes over the past 115 years they are still at it. This socialist program hasn’t ‘just happened by chance’ but it has been planned right from the start. And their greatest hatred is anything to do with the influence of Christianity in the USA culture. Here I don’t mean organized church institutions but they cannot stand the actual content of the NT ‘per se’.

that is your fault because all you had to do was ask someone whos been around longer then you they would of told you, but youth doesn't respect those who came before them, my generation did, we knew damn well everything we had was because of those who came before us and paved the way and paid the debts and tolls, now it seems young people think history started when they where born and this toxic sense of entitlement will get them no where fast, it leads them to thinking they are somehow a victim if everything isn't just handed to them. and to further complicate the issue they somehow want to retroactively go back in history and right historical wrongs, fist off these wrongs are not happening in the present and they haven't for decades they simply no longer exist (in America) , secondly none of the people or groups complicit have existed for several generations, this is beating a dead horse in all sense of the word, people who can't even begin to think as a individual or conduct critical thought should not be attempting to rewrite history, let it stands as it where, let it serve as an example of what not to allow to happen again, let it remain the cautionary tale instead of trying to erase all evidence from history so maybe it never happens again.

Bro that's how it works in the world. Its celestial amnesia. The next generation will fall into the same traps, guaranteed. In the book of ecclesiastes king Solomon said that there was nothing new under the sun.......the best thing we can do, those of us who see these patterns and who are student of history, is to not get dragged into petty bickering and focus on our goals and dreams in life.

@@eoinMB3949 today’s socialist will be the conservative capitalists of tomorrow with the passage of time, and then this cycle will repeats itself with the next new generation, I guess we really are damned to continually repeat our mistakes, this is sad but factual. We the human race tout ourselves as having limitless potential of progression yet we have always followed the same cyclic stagnation, fooling only ourselves with grandeur of god like ability. I used to become upset at people, usually much younger ones who thought they discovered the answers to everything then I recall my youth and remember I was just like them, I also thought I knew everything also just like them then later realized I didn’t know anything, everything I assumed was just a reiteration.

@@philwilliams953 I'm not trying to start an argument, either, but as a point of interest, John Wayne was 36 years old with two children when the war broke out, which made him ineligible for the draft, so he didn't have to "dodge" it as some claim. As to his 'failure to enlist', he actually did try to enlist, but John Ford, the famous Hollywood director who was also a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves, (between the two giving him quite a bit of influence) talked with friends in the War Department and had Wayne's request to enlist denied. Ford's reasoning was that John Wayne would be of far more value to the war effort making 'morale boosting' films than he would be carrying a rifle in the front lines or, for that matter, in any other military job to which he might be assigned. When you consider just how badly the first year or so of the war went for us, and how badly the general population needed a boost, Ford was probably right. Not everyone who contributes to a war effort carries a rifle.

A famous John Wayne event: In 1971 or so the Yale Lampoon “dared” John Wayne to come on to the campus of Yale. He did, in a tank and was pelted with snowballs. He went to some large hall there and bandied back and forth, with good humor from both sides, with the Yale liberals... much of which had to do with Nixon. At the end he got a standing ovation. Compare to our current academic climate and draw your own conclusions.

Oh yes, I still have not divulged any personal viewpoints of my own. I have only questioned yours, your lack of factual information-other than at least three quotes from alinsky, and alluded to a personal meet and greet to get down to the 'nitty-gritty' of what your issues are, Mr. Mullen, but I am sure you will twist this all around again. But inherent in that truth is the fact that all natural resources belong to the people. The people should always be compensated for their use or it is theft. That is the basis for the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend. It is good for the oil companies (some of their most cost effective fields) and good for the people. If applied to all natural resources (so multinational strip mines don't come in and take all the wealth paying us nothing and leaving behind a Superfund site) you could MORE EFFECTIVELY provide for the poor and not steal from anybody in a way that Thomas Paine and John Locke et al(Founding Fathers both) would be proud of.
