A Word on Westerns

A Word on Westerns

4 жыл бұрын

Gregg Palmer appeared with John Wayne in 6 movies. Duke liked having "the big guy" on location with him. Not just because Palmer could deliver the acting goods, but, it seems, because he could also watch out for Duke's cat! Wait til you hear Palmer talk about it in this interview from A WORD ON WESTERNS' very first annual John Wayne Birthday Celebration, May 21, 2014. Gregg (Jan 25, 1927-Oct 31, 2015) had so many wonderful stories about his adventures in acting he could, and should, have written a book. We were lucky he joined us to reminisce, shortly before his death at the age of 88. Groomed as a leading man by Universal-International when his career began under the name Palmer Lee, Gregg's tall, 6'2', height quickly started to go sideways and he became a burly, much in demand, character actor. Usually cast as a rough villain or outlaw, Gregg worked in 100s of TV series. And, he was in movies with some of cinema's giants. Not just Duke, but James Stewart, Maureen O'Hara, Rock Hudson, Fred MacMurray and three with Audie Murphy, plus, the comedy teams of Martin & Lewis and Abbott & Costello. His numerous TV westerns include "Gunsmoke" (21 appearances), "Wagon Train," "Have Gun, Will Travel," "Rawhide," "Bonanza," "Laramie," "Wild, Wild West" and just about any that were being produced in the fifties and sixties. In "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp," his recurring role as Tom McLowery included the climactic shootout at the O.K. Corral. Gregg Palmer tells about John Mitchum showing him a new piece of poetry, "America, Why I Love Her," that turned into a memorable recording done by John Wayne. Gregg recites the poem to a room full of western fans...and actually sounds like Duke! The poem has been newly recorded by Robert Duvall, who joined dozens of other celebrities all recording more of John Mitchum's poems for a CD release, produced by his daughter, Cindy. Gregg Palmer left us lots of goodies for this and future generations to enjoy. This emotion charged compilation of short interview segments from 2014, with additional material, was recorded in The Autry Museum's Sagebrush Cafe.

Around 2008 a fellow western fan and I traveled to Tombstone, AZ. It was an anniversary of the shootout and was crowded with fans. We were hanging around the Main Street watching a fast draw exhibition when I noticed a great big, familiar looking guy sitting at a card table on the boardwalk in the shade. Very hot day. It was Gregg Palmer. He was alone for about 10 minutes and we talked with him like old friends. He told us about his friendship with John Wayne and other stories of his TV and movie days. Very nice, humble, regular kind of guy. Not really what I expected for a Hollywood character actor of his standing. I've seen him in hundreds of scenes.it was a thrill.

The best John Wayne I've ever heard. Sounds just like him without parody. RIP Greg Palmer, you were a great performer and without your particular style, those characters would have been bland. he was an actor and entertainer. i love his movies but he only defended America in movies. Mel Brooks served in combat in Europe defusing land mines in front of advancing Allied troops. Lee Marvin was wounded fighting during the Battle of Saipan. Jimmy Stewart was a decorated bomber pilot who was a major motion picture star who quit Hollywood before Pearl Harbor to join the Army Air Corp. Stewart joined as an privater and retired as a brigadier general. Those actors defended America in combat.

@@AWordonWesterns he loves the ones with the oldest characters. He was born in 1925 in deep poverty and the westerns were what he could watch and get away from the tough part of his life. He is a big fan of Bob Steele. He always said Roy Rogers kissed too many girls. :) but Bob Steele has his few. His all-time favorite interviews Rob are the interviews about Audie Murphy. He was Dad's hero. He grew up in poverty like dad and Dad wept when he died. But everything you do he really likes. If you ever do or have done something on the westerns in the 30s I would love to watch. Personally I am amazed at the riding done in these movies, the breakneck speed. If you do more on the actors that are great riders likes that too. Thanks so much for the question.

Really nasty fellow. My friend who conducted this interview did a top drawer job. He let the guest do 90 percent of the talking and that’s not always an easy thing to do. John Wayne called you "Grizzly", he called me, "Pilgrim"! I keep telling people they missed out on watching old shows like "Sky King" (favorite as kid)! I remember decoder rings too, haha!

Good stuff mate. Whenever I was in Honolulu for RIMPC navy exercises me and my Aussie Navy mates always stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Some guys I knew had had drinks with Mr Wayne there who was rapped to be out with Aussies. So they told me. That was in the early 70's.
