I’m Mexican-American. I absolutely hate people being offended on my behalf. And then those same people trying to explain to me why I should be offended, AND then when I still don’t agree, try to invalidate my voice. 🙄

Thanks for mentioning this. I did some research and realize what a HUGE injustice was done to native americans and to the family of Walter Wetzel by getting rid of the Redskins mascot and logo. He was an amazing man who will be totally forgotten in another generation, if not sooner.

As a Native American, Navajo, and there is no way to prove that I'm Navajo, just believe me. But yeah, the name "Red Skins," doesn't bother me. In fact, a lot of Navajo's liked the team--I have a Red Skins cap. It's not even a deal--big or small.
@intherockies
@intherockies 3 жыл бұрын
Does it bother you if someone uses the word Indian verses Native American? I was talking to my adult child and said in the old days some boys would play Cowboys and Indians. I thought her head was going to start spinning around. She got so mad at me she ended up walking off. I honestly did not mean any disrespect. I'm older and that has always been the word we used. My adult child told me "well now you know better so do better". I'm trying to always use the word Native American now. I'm just curious if I'm being disrespectful if I happen to use the word Indian. Of course it would never be about anything bad because I do respect your culture and enjoy learning about it.
@Ishisah
@Ishisah 3 жыл бұрын
@@intherockies: Personally-No. -In fact, people (that is Indians/Native Americans/Indigenous peoples) still use the word--like saying, Indian Country, us Indians and so on. She shouldn't have got so mad--on behalf of me. I'm sorry that happened. -Most Native American/Natives/Indians/Indigenous Tribes, don't share a common language or culture. If possible, I try to be specific and name the Tribe--like I'm Navajo. -Navajos are in a different situation than other tribes, as well. For instance, I live on the Navajo Reservation. I'm only around Navajos--there are no other tribes around us--because we are so big (we take up almost 4 States). -Even the border towns are full of only Navajos--we are a giant tribe. When we see another tribe--we're like, "look a Ute," or "Is that an Apache?" "Look it's a Pueblo." -And that is a different experience than Tribes in Oklahoma--were there is a whole lot of smaller tribes that are mixed together in a small area. It's them that would use the word Indian/Native American/Native/Indigenous more so than us Navajos--we would say Navajo Country (because there are only Navajos around us). -Any how. No, I'm not offended. However, I'm offended by your daughter being offended. -I wouldn't worry about it, most people have thick-skin and wouldn't get so angry about a name of a game.

Totally have had similar experiences with other Native American's I've known or met. My dad had a trucking company growing up and 2 of his drivers were full Cherokee brothers. Their 2 favorite teams were the Redskin's and Chief's, in fact every time I saw them they had a Redskin's or Chief's hat on! They weren't offended by it at all, they loved it! So I'm thinking, did they take a poll of Native Americans to actually see how many of them are actually offended before they just started changing these teams names!? Are they actually offended? Because from my experience they aren't. Obviously I haven't spoken to every Native American in the country, so not gonna say there aren't any that are offended, but that's just been my experience with those I have met.

PREACH IT JOHN!! Disneyland's another example of this. They've made major changes to their attractions because a small number of people have made complaints on behalf of other people who were not offended: The wench auction segment (updated for Political correctness in 2016) and the pillaging and drunken pirate scenes in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride (Updated back in the mid 1990's), both of which reflected the unglamorous dark truth about Pirates got the axe taken to them on TWO SEPARATE occasions (20+ years apart). After the ride existed unaltered as a highly beloved classic for nearly 30 years since 1967 without publicized complaints, the feminist group NOW (National Organization of Women) a small group that organized an insignificant complaint got major media attention by making a mountain out of a mole hill and forced Disney to make it's initial edit back in the late 1990s. Prior to NOW speaking up and then ultimately disappearing off the face of the earth, no one complained about this ride. The auction scene existed nearly 40 years unaltered before Disney voluntarily changed it in 2016. Splash Mountain (which opened in 1989) recently became the latest highly loved attraction Disney has decided to overhaul. When Disney created it, they socially mindfully left out the racial insensitivities and stereotypes depicted in it's associated film Song of the South (a product of it's time which was released in 1946 and banned in the United States in the late 1960's). Although over the past 30 years insignificant few black people have bickered over the ride being inspired by the film and associated despite it's difference, BLM's out cry in 2020 specifically forced many businesses to re-examine their approach towards race relations. Prior to the covid-19 pandemic which disabled the entire world, Disney felt socially pressured (by nobody black) into re-theming Splash Mountain, and somehow transforming it into The Princess and the Frog (which really deserves it's own fully original ride and show building). As of today, February 22nd 2021, the retheme has apparently either been cancelled or postponed without announcements due to park closures at some Disney resorts. Most likely, Splash Mountain won't receive a retheme after all anytime soon due to the financial losses the Walt Disney company endured due to various worldwide covid-19 related extended park closures.

Great ending quote! I have had a similar thought but not been able to put it into words as well. A person who says something another person takes offense at usually had no intention whatsoever to offend the other person. If the person just offered a bit of grace instead of taking offense, everyone would be happier. But making a point of being offended is what takes an innocent mistake and turns it into a relationship killer.

HEY! I might not HAPPEN to know any pirates personally, but I am SURE they are very sensitive people who would appreciate that woman standing up for them. They certainly can’t do it for themselves. First, pirates probably have limited internet access on the high seas. But even more importantly, they have no natural defenses. None!! Try to be just a LITTLE more mindful of the helpless, John. I’m offended that you’re not offended by her offense of pirates being potentially offended.

Speaking of the elderly - they DO need and want to get out and aren’t as afraid as we might say they are. This doctor I follow on the medias said his one elderly patient was a grandma who got Covid at an underground karaoke party during the lockdown. Which kind of makes you wonder if we shouldn’t have driven grandma to clandestine and unregulated venues in an attempt to protect her.

I'm from Michigan, we still have a mask mandate. Kids in preschool have to wear them all day - it's nothing short of child abuse, imo. It's been scientifically proven that kids don't get this bad or spread it. Good for you in standing your ground in the coffee line. God bless you. Keep speaking your mind. And, you're a comedic genius - love your country song skits and others like the Home Depot skit and basically everything you do. Good for you for leaving Sarah Silverman's show but not wanting to cancel her! This cancel culture is going wayyyy too far. Love the points you make and the comedy infused with it (and like I mentioned, the Country music skits are hilarious and the Home Depot one and all you do).

offense comes in all shapes and sizes- imaginary offense whenever you think someone is trying to offend you but they aren’t. accidental offense whenever somebody crosses the line unintentionally. I think we need to stop and evaluate the situation surround the offense and realize over half of the time we’re creating these situations and arguments from nothing
