Something to cool you down this summer, a trip to one of the coldest festival in Japan's north, Hokkaido. This is the Noboribetsu Onsen (Hot Spring) Festival and you've never seen anything like this before! Men in thongs throwing water at -10C / 14F temperatures at night. It's a surreal scene and one I got to participate in. History: The event has been taking place since the 1970s as a way to give thanks to the nature around them for the hot springs that provide the local area with jobs. The men battle like Oni in a Cavalry War, one guy riding 2 or 3 others to get the flag or headband. Of course the use of Hot Water which keeps us warm makes the event fun and also a reminder that it also keeps us warm. Fundoshi are traditional Japanese thongs worn in festivals and cultural rituals for many centuries.

★ The Noboribetsu Onsen Matsuri 登別温泉祭りfestival takes place every year on February 3rd and 4th. URL: noboribetsu-spa.jp/events/nobo... if you'd like to participate, space is limited and you shoud send an email or message to the Noboribetsu Tourism office to see if there is space for you. You cannot typically arrive on the day of the event and participate.
ℹ️ Access: Noboribetsu is about 1.5 to 2 hours by train and car from Sapporo, 1 to 1.5 hours from New Chitose Airport. There are hourly buses from the Station to the Onsen Town for about 200 yen. Taxi are also available and it's about 15 minutes from Noboribetsu Station to the Onsen / Spa town, 20 minutes to Jigokudani.

Hey John, way to start off the new channel! You would think the giant phallus would be the most shocking thing but it was in fact your voice 😅 I didn't know it could get that high pitched! I'm glad you survived and it looked like a really great time! I'm kind of scared to try it, but I love onsens, so also very tempted to.

Thanks Greg! The reception has been anything but chilly 🥶 and the high voice is probably from the shrinkage ... of, you know, the vocal cords in the cold temperatures 😂

John, congratulations on launching your new channel! It feels like an eternity but some things are worth the wait. I love this idea of going back to where it all began. Your experience has allowed you to find new and interesting angles on something that has been previously covered. Has anyone ever suffered from hypothermia as a result of this festival? Now that things are rolling, what sort of release schedule can we expect? I don’t want to rush your creative process. I’m just excited for more great content!

John, we seem to remember that a naked man festival is what kicked off your KZfaq career, so this was a very appropriate way to start this new chapter! Of all the great content about Japan on KZfaq, yours is the greatest. You’ve always had mad presentation and reporting skills, and we’re glad that you’re no longer just doing the “go” series! LOVE the new intro, too! Congrats on a great relaunch and we look forward to more! PS- You scream like a girl! Lol!

The coverage of Noboribetsu as an onsen town was very well thought out. The approach was about the travel and experience there. After watching the video and remembering all the post production livestreams, now I really would love to go Noboribetsu to satisfy my own curiosity. Great job John. Love the first JDOIJ episode. Well done. Bravo!
