Japan's Extreme North in Hokkaido is home to some super frigid towns like Kitami, Rikubetsu, and Abashiri. In the middle of winter, at night, one town has a massive meat festival -- and it's outdoors in below zero temperatures. It's the world's coldest BBQ festival with over 2,000 people attending together to grill Kitami's famous pork short rib cuts called Karubi and other meat like wagyu, horumon and sausages.
I drove north from Sapporo to experience it and eat as much local barbecue as my stomach could hold.
On the way, I stopped in Rikubetsu and spent a night at the town's roadhouse where temperatures dropped to -27C / -16.6F at 11pm. The coldest record night here is -38.4 Celsius or -37.1 Fahrenheit on February 7, 2019.
Note: The coldest temperature recorded in Japan was -41 degrees Celsius (-42 degrees Fahrenheit) in Asahikawa in January 1902.
The Kitami Extreme Cold Yakiniku Festival 北見厳寒の焼き肉まつり is held annually in February, tickets are 2000 yen but sell out fast. Book in advance online.
URL: kitamikanko.jp/event/event15.html
The event was suspended in 2021 but plans to resume is 2022 are underway.

Thanks for watching this adventure I filmed in February 2020 on a Hokkaido driving adventure. Travel around Japan for me continues in October so expect more adventure! What did you think - would you eat Horumon in -20C weather? Don't forget to subscribe to this new ONLY in JAPAN channel if you haven;t already and see you again soon! Mata ne~ John

Two Winter's ago, we hit -53*C with the windchill. I got frostnip on the tip of my nose, as I was out helping my friend shovel snow for an Elementary School. Frostnip is just before frostbite, and boy was it ever cold! I've only ever experienced that same temperature once before, further north, delivering News Papers... brutal. I'm from Alberta, Canada.

I have grilled sausages over a campfire in -20C to -25C many times. This festival looks very tempting to visit for me at least. Here in northern parts of Sweden where I'm from the winter is 6 months long and it can get to around -40C or colder in some places each winter. The coldest day in my lifetime was -42C in my city when I was a few years old, so I don't really remember so much of it. Even if it hit cold than -30C here, we still have to go to school and work. A few winters ago at my old job I had to shoveling snow around campfire all around the area I worked at in -32C. My beard was all white with thick frost after 1 hour of work.

@@mbe102 Canada - when I was there for a viewer meet up in Montreal and it was -30C the night before, it was the first time I'd experienced such cold. I asked my Canadian friends at the meet up "how do you live through this winter? Why not move?" They all shrugged. If you're born into it, it's just another cold day LOL Canadians are pretty special.

I absolutely remember the other trip to the NO-Festival =) Didn't you also tease this "other trip" during the video? Idk. Saying' you were hyped up with energy is an understatement. ^-^ Thx for the video - I just love your trips! Archived or not, it takes away nothing from the event.
