Yea totally missed that I said a glide had a 1.48 first gear. My bad I meant 1.80 or 1.76 for those who are extremely specific
@stevem145
@stevem145 5 жыл бұрын
Stock first gear ratios on a Powerglide transmission 1.82 1.76 the 1.80 that you have is an aftermarket gear set in my opinion you will be very happy with the power glide and possibly a little bit faster mostly happy that isn't broken all the time. I have ran a Powerglide for many years in a 36 plus hundred pound car that 60fts mid 1.3severybody said a Powerglide would not work in and I have never had a complaint.

Very good video and information. Always thought a power glide, was better for 1/8 mile racing and th400 was better for 1/4 mile. But after this video, I see the power glide is better for higher horsepower engines. While the Th400 extra gear helps out lower horsepower engines.

I've driven a lot of GM cars from the 70's and my favorite transmission is the turbo 350. I would only use the turbo 400 on an extreme build, like a drag car. Even though they might seem similar from the names, they drive totally different, turbo 400's can feel kind of heavy and clunky, 350's are smooth. Also, just for amusement, if you happen to knock your car into reverse while driving down the street, the 400 and 350 react totally differently. The 400 will lock your wheels up and kill the engine immediately, the 350 will kill the engine if you don't give it any gas, but if you give it some gas it will start spinning the wheels in reverse.

I loved my Powerglide in my 68 Chevelle in high school, neutral lock out, Hurst shifter ,trans cooler...man 76mph pop that bad boy into second and them 295 50 series Bf's would squak .Drove it daily for almost 4 years and it took everything a teenager could throw at it and I was destroying 5speed cobras and 400s all day.This was late 90s early 00s here in Vegas with extreme heat no issues, its amazing how much more they have improved the parts for it nowadays back in the day you just made sure you had neutral lockout and pray Lol im 41 now and still swear by powerglide to this day.great video great explanation 👍

I have a OBS short, wide regular cab truck. I got it down to 3200lbs. The interior is stripped with one aluminum plate for gauges and two aluminum seats. Truck is back halfed with a 9in ford with ladder bars. Rear adjustable shocks. The roll cage runs from the rear frame over the axle through the cab and runs out to the front frame horns. No inter fenders. The frame has holes drilled for weight. Still running stock front suspension. That’s about to change. I’m installing light weight A-arm and I plan to remove the front and side glass and go with Optic Armor. This should get me close to 3050-3100lbs. Running a big cubic inch SBC with a Built Power Glide. Truck best time is in the 6:50’s in the 1/8th mile. It has a 4:56 gear, so the power glide really helps me get off the line before having to shift and upset the truck. I’m hoping going with lighter front suspension and using Optic Armor I can get in the 6:30’s. That’s pretty good for a full size truck that’s all steel but the hood. I’m a big fan of the Power Glide even for street driving. My truck makes enough power that I don’t need a low first gear to get moving. Plus I have the 4:56 rear gear.. I had several people tell me you can’t run a Power Glide on something over 3000lbs. It’s all about setup and gearing. My truck was setup to race 1/8 mile. I can’t run down the interstate at 80mph for long distances. But at drag and drives I hope to cruise at 55-60mph. I’m excited to try anyway. Great video, sometimes I feel the Power Glides get a bad wrap, but it’s because guys don’t have them setup right. 🇺🇸🦅🏁🛻

The lockup powerglide has been around since the late 90s. You didn't see them much after 2004 because they got outlawed in class type racing because people who had them were kicking ass with them. Only place you found them was grudge racing if they were willing to tell you. Once the rule went away they now own just about every record where they're aloud to be used. You can also get them for under 10k as a package. He's right in the fact if you want one of the best out there it's expensive. 15k won't even get it done in many cases. Also the Th400 is popular now with cars making 2500hp+ with the first gear removed. Some keep the 3 gears. Just depends on the tuner. It's not that the 2speed is better it's just easier to get to work. Nice video bro..

@@braleyshardwoodcustoms8584 say your in 3rd gear 4500rpm, hit OD on the 4l80....drops to ~2300 rpm as ya sit at 65 to 70mph then the torque converter locks up..... dropping rpm to about 1800 to 2100 rpm. your th350/400 torque converter will ALWAYS have that few hundred RPM "slip" this slip also makes a lot of heat.... some th350s had a lock up TC.... along with some 3 speed FWD trans (th185 iirc) on an old gen 1 v8 GM.... a 700r4 is a direct bolt on (3 speed + OD + lock up TC) you will need the factory controller, and some throttle linkage for the TV cable (and know how to set it..... which is easy on stock brackets and carbs) but a 4l80E is a bit stronger....newer design.... and adapters are out their you can build a 700r4 to take a lot of power.... if ya cool it, and set the TV cable right

I think the new hot setup is the turbo glide. Glides certainly have their place. The downfall of a glide is the same now as it has always been. It might be a lot lighter it also means its a lot weaker. You can make a seriously strong glide but its certainly going to cost. If your willing to sacrifice weight for strength but you still want a better first gear ratio then the 2 speed turbo glide is what the industry has turned to. I think it also depends on where your budget is. If you want something that will work behind a dump truck and is built for pure strength and you dont want to invest 5k in a tranny then a 400 is where its at. The 400 is an excellent option for someone who wants to go racing reliably on a budget. Your going to sacrifice the hp that all that extra rotating mass robs though. If your not so much on a budget and you are shooting for every 100th that you can squeeze out of the car and you dont mind all the additional maintaince then a glide is for you. Knocking out weight is just free horsepower. There is a reason why in stock eliminator and super stock most guys are running glides, 200r4, c4 and 904s with 3 clutch packs in them. Weight=hp. Just my 2 cents though. Nice video thumbs up.

Great video.. easy to understand.. but reading the comments I see some confusion over a built PG vs stock PG.. A stock PG is still good for the street in a low HP car say 300-600 hp after all GM put them in 3400 lbs + cars.. after 600hp it's best to put some stronger parts in them up to 1000hp with a blanket or shield of course .. After 1000hp you really need a built PG with a aftermarket case... Low HP cars with a stock PG work better when the car is 3000lbs or less.. Any thing over 3000 lbs street sometimes strip car really needs to be a th350 or th400 to get all that weight moving... After 1000hp it really don't matter.. It will be a built transmission anyways.. 1000hp + cars with a built PG is less weight and gives you more time to settle the car down before you have to shift... Any strip car that's a 1000hp+ a PG is the way to go..

I'm a young car enthusiast that's trying to make his dreams a reality and trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible. I'm building a pro touring setup 1970 Chevelle that's going to be setup for autocross, but i'm going to be putting a twin turbo 6.0ls in it so it should be at least 1k hp, I also plan on driving it a lot and maybe taking it down the strip once or twice. I'm leaning towards powerglide but am just curious what your opinion is since you're much more knowledgeable than me

How about the rear end gear ratio with the power glide, will you need to change the ratio now?

Well the glide is a perfectly streetable trans gm ran many versions of it up till 64-65 whn the norm turbo hydro came out chevy had the power glide till 65-66 and for some cars even after tht due to da turbo hydro being a option altho some companies like pontiac buick caddy ran either a 3 speed or some even a 4 speed roto hydro trans till early mid 60s...some even had a "dual range" roto hydro trans which changes the shift points in the trans due to usein diff fliud passages.....honestly its about one gear/tires and how many times you wanna shift....a turbo hydro either the th350 th375 th400 ll have to be shifted twice where as a glide just once.....and as you said has a longer first gear allowin you to pull further i the power curve before shifts.....

when running the 1/4 mile in the cow what differences will you see going from the TH400 to the glide? Like does the glide hit your max rpm sooner, because I am thinking you will hit high gear or 1:1 sooner in the glide than in the TH400. Just curious. By the 1/4 mile the TH400 is stretched pretty far in the cow I would imagine so just seeing if the glide is more suited for 1/8 mile passes for you.

Yes you can they make a valve body that will let you leave off the brake in every gear its like 400 buck at jegs.

What power range do you think necessitates a swap to a glide from a 400? I'm building a turbo ls foxbody, somewhere around 900hp for track use. I haven't picked a trans yet but was debating on 400 or glide.

Man these cars are pigs so I'm curious to see how well the glide works for you. It probably would have been easier to just say that by the time you configured the th400 to work well for your setup then you would have ended up with a turboglide. Way more practical to just go with the powerglide so I'm glad to see this.

I know most people have their own opinions of how to do it. But how did you do go about burnouts with the th400 at the track? Burnout started in 2nd then shift to 1st once at the line? Or start in first and quick bump to 2nd to finish. then back to 1st at the line?
