In 2016, the singer and actor RITA COOLIDGE was interviewed by director JOHN EDGINTON about the phenomenal JOE COCKER and his 1970 musical journey across America - the infamous MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN TOUR. The brilliant musician LEON RUSSELL was the band leader. Russell had written the song "Delta Lady" about Rita, his then girlfriend. It became a Joe Cocker standard.
The interview was conducted at the Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles - formerly the recording studios of A&M Records, who funded the 1970 tour .

I remember sitting in on a session with Bonnie and Delaney and the band wete all stellar players. He moved out of Skyhill when he was hired by Steve Cropper to be an engineer at Stax in Memphis. After a stop in Chicago at Chess Records the studio was finished at Stax and we moved to Memphis. A long time ago. Thanks for the memories.

I saw the same tour in Dallas at SMU music hall and was by far the worst concert I've ever seen. Cocker did not want to be there and was just awful. The critique was not on the rest of the band, including the great Leon Russell. I did not know that Bobby Key and Jim Gordon was in the band, I was so young then and the attention was on Cocker and Russell. But I did see Derick and the Dominoes later in that same venue with Bobby Key, Jim Gordon and of course Eric Clapton.what a wonder, beautiful concert I was so lucky as I believe they only toured once.

Thumbs up on your comment for responding like a person. Still the Joe Cocker concert was the worst concert I have ever seen and nothing comes close to being that bad and fact it is the only concert I can remember being awful Though the back up band for Derek and the Dominoes was "Toe Fat" and they were awful, but that was not the band we came to listen to. You can watch (listen) to clips of "Toe Fat" on YT. later..

@casyatbat
@casyatbat 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreycolvin9124 it was amazing! The band was introduced by "Sam the Sham" from Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs who was friends with Bobby Whitlock. He announced _"I'm sorry, Eric Clapton cannot be here tonight, so here is Derek and the Dominos"_ I never thought about it much, as it was too me then and now, one of those queerky that happens from to time to time. But I thought I would do a little research to find out the connection and found: Allman’s very first session with the group provided Layla with one of its most inspired jams, “Key to the Highway.” At the same time that the Dominos were recording at Criteria, one of its studios was being used to record a new album by 1960s pop singer Sam the Sham. Born Domingo Samudio, the Memphis musician was an old family friend of Whitlock’s who had made his name on novelty songs like “Wooly Bully” and “Li’l Red Riding Hood.” With his career having pretty much run its course, Sam was hoping to kickstart it again with a new album under his real name. The Dominos heard him (Sam) playing the blues standard “Key to the Highway” and quickly began jamming it themselves, as it was one tune that both the group and Allman knew. If you have interest, google: *An Oral History of Derek and the Dominos' 'Layla'* + guitarplayer.com Later......

The worst concert I've ever seen was Joe Cocker's Mad Dog and Englishmen tour in Dallas at SMU. This critique is on Cocker only and not Leon and the rest of the band. Clearly Cocker did not want to be there. Pity such a great music venue, small, intimate. I also saw Derick and the Dominoes in the same venue and what a fantastic concert. The band was introduced by Sam the Sham from Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs who introduce the band, saying sorry Eric Clapton could not make it so here is Derick and the Dominoes. I've seen Leon twice after that with the last one in the mid 80s in a small club in San Rafael, Ca with Edgar Winter and John Entwhistle from the Who. What a night and what luck to see them in a place that held many 200 people.
