Artur no disrespect but upon Leon's induction into the rock and roll hall of fame . Leon gave kudos to Elton for finding him in the ditch along the highway of life and bringing him to the high stages and huge audiences. I dont know what transpired but it seems hard time hit the man along with brain surgery and all.

@Alexis Savage A few years ago I was flying into Buffalo NY after being away for a week. Leon was playing in Buffalo that night, and I'd strongly considered going to see him, because, how often am I going to be able to see him? Then I talked myself out of it because I'd been away and should get home to the Canadian side to see my family, and I'd go see him another time...... And about 1 year later, I think to the day, Leon passed away. :( And now, whenever I second-guess something that I want to do, I think of my missed Leon Russell opportunity.

I saw him so many times in my life with so many incarnations of his music. My son's band warmed up for him in Nashville and he loved them so much he called them on stage to jam with him for his encore. I took my daughter to see him once and she wanted to go down and take pictures of him on stage. I gave her my camera and said you'll never get past security. She was gone for awhile and when she came back she handed the camera back and not thinking I put it in my pocket. After the show I remembered to look through the digital shots she took and was shocked. Come to find out that Leon noticed this beautiful teenage girl trying to take pictures from afar and had security escort her up to the photographers pit in front of him so she could get better shots. A sweet human if there ever was one ❤️

In 1972 my new brother-in-law, purveyor of any cool music that came into my line of sight, introduced me to LEON LIVE! It was the first album that I bought with my own paper route money, and as a triple album it put quite a dent in my wallet. I can't estimate the number of times to this day that I've listened to it. It's my favorite live album of all time. Fast forward to the 80s and I found myself living in Oklahoma, a New Jersey boy who was truly a "stranger in a strange land". I had the good fortune to land a succession of radio gigs that paid the bills and made "work" an awful lot of fun. One such gig was in Ponca City, where the venerable Poncan Theater hosted an evening with Leon. I knew the manager, he knew of my love of all things Leon, and he got me a security job for the event. Not only did I get to watch the entire show from the wings, but after the show was able to be the conduit for people wanting Leon's autograph, taking their items into the bus so he could win. I was awestruck sitting with this genius who had shaped so much of my musical life. He was a quiet, gentle man. We chatted about the Church Studio/Shelter Records building on 3rd St and the Safeway store in Tulsa where he had bagged groceries before embarking on his full-time music career. He thought it funny that I had made a pilgrimage to the store years before just to stand in the same place my hero had. As the crowd thinned and my work was done, I reluctantly got up to leave. He shook my hand and said "Big fella, I've enjoyed our time". My heart leapt. RIP to one of rocks true legends.

There will never be another Leon Russell. I have seen him several times in concert and I love his music. I also saw him with Elton John @ the BOK and they rock the house down to the ground. I admire Elton for his loyalty toward Leon . Bringing Leon out of the shadows and putting him on stage with a grand keyboard and mic is where his throne is. Writing the most beautiful ballads or getting down with his rock and role style is untouchable and even the most gifted entertainers will be silent .

Leon Russell was one my favorite musicians. To me he was the Orson Welles of rock, he was so mythical in stature. He was legendary among other musicians. His albums/songs were so diverse in nature, and his ultimate legendary performances with Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishman were beyond description. I was fortunate enough to see him a few times during the height of his powers and toward his waning years. Those times were magical and I was transfixed by those shows. Amongst rock pianists he, Nicky Hopkins, Ian Stewart and Elton John, along with others were VERY influential in my keyboard approach early on. But it was Leon Russell whose influence had me the most. It's a shame he's no longer with us, but he gave us many memorable moments. R.I.P. Mr. Russell and wherever your spirit may be, hopefully there's great music being made.

GOODBYE LEON! You were so great. Thank you for changing the brain of a young piano player seeing you in this video on PBS in the late 60s. I was just getting past the prison of reading sheet transcriptions and finding my way by ear and then I saw the best gospel blues piano player in the world. They replayed this video several times and I was ready with my little reel to reel tape recorder. It took a lot of woodshed time to learn the lick here at 0:20 and some other classic blues licks that came effortlessly from Leon. I was lucky enough to see you in the 70s at the Long Beach Live album session and more recently with Elton John at Bridge School Benefit and your show at Carmel. In many bands through the years I've insisted we only play your version of "Jumping Jack Flash". People, next time you hear "Masquerade" at a Sunday brunch tip a glass for Leon.

You can feel the soul in his music I remember my childhood best friend. His sister had a poster on her wall of Leon Russell back in the early 70s. I never heard of them back then but she adored him literally. Only after I got much older did I really learn to appreciate what he brought to music what a star he was awesome.

@jeffj257 - You're not even a bit crazy! I love this song. I've probably heard this song - a great song, too - about 1000 times since 1971. I really like this studio clip because one really gets to see what an amazing musician he really is and how good those that surround him are. Great stuff!

John Franciscas I LOVE Queen of the Roller Derby ! & have since 1973 or so. " Crystal Closet Queen" on the Shelter People album. His tribute to Little Richard, who consistently said when he arrived anywhere " Beauty's On Duty". "Of Thee I sing" which immediately precedes it is a kicker of a song too-

I saw it too, but I already had his first album and was a huge fan. It was on National Education Television (NET). PBS did not exist yet. This is talked about in a new biography that came out a couple months ago called Leon Russell: The Master of Space and Time's Journey Through Rock & Roll History by Bill Janovitz. Every true fan of Leon's should read this book. I've read a couple dozen music bios and this is far and away the best one ever. It's over 500 pages and full of detailed information about Leon's life and very busy career. There will never be a better one. Well worth the time and you will come away with an even greater respect for this man's place and broad influence on American music and beyond.

rom661 Yeah,I would like some evidence that Cocker 'hated' Leon, from what I've read they have remained friends through the years.I love his voice, I love his music, I love everything about Leon Russell. I first saw him live back in the 70s. He is an American icon. I saw him last at the House of Blues, he actually was kinda of talkative that night. He put on a knock em' dead performance. He just moves me.

+Julia S I first saw Leon live around 73. Had all of his music and thought he was the most awesome. Still do actually. He did a dueling piano bit with Billy Preston....that was amazing! Cocker made a lot of bucks singing Leon's songs, I had not heard he hated Leon and dont want to even think it now. Leon moves me too. Such memories of my HS and College years ♥

Joe was frustrated over money(made 800 bucks for the mad dogs and Englishmen tour)I don't believe frustration equals hate but they cooled on words for a while afterwards. They're both classics and timeless.
