A shady aircraft enthusiast who cobbled together a NASCAR team from the remains of two others. Three eccentric sponsors who each had a different dog as their mascot. A mild-mannered driver who left a multi-car team in search of his first Winston Cup victory. All led by the youngest crew chief in the garage. This is their story.

Just a little bit more good luck how things could been so much different. Sadly so many deserving drivers came so close. Appear some drivers & teams get more than there fair share of good luck Just fall out sky handed to them. Never heard not 1 bad word about Johnny Benson Jr. Not it not might been there but I not heard 1. Kind like Mark Martin should won lot more but appear he is such nice guy. He never would take the cheap shot to win. I talk him some really a very nice guy.

Johnny Benson has always been a very special driver to me. He grew up in Grand Rapids Michigan, a small city about 35 minutes to the north of me up the Interstate from the town I grew up and still live in today. That city, though not mine, was a very special part of my childhood as I would take regular trips up there to visit my older brother and watch hockey games with season tickets with my father, both now passed on by the time I've now reached the young age of 19. Especially as a long-time Roush fan, I loved seeing him in the Cheerios car, growing up 20 minutes West of Cereal City. Thank you for throwing together this video. I have a few Benson diecast's and he truly may be my favorite driver of all time.

For those wondering why the video was re-uploaded: There were NO copyright issues with the original version. However, I received many complaints that two clips from the 2000 spring race at Rockingham couldn't be heard on some people's computers. I also found the same audio dropped out on the mobile version of KZfaq. I decided to re-upload the video without the clips (and also tweak the name "Oswego" after several complaints on that.)

No Disrespect to Scott Riggs, but quality runs took a major nosedive too with Riggs. Also don't forget how great Johnny was as an ASA and Busch series winner. He probably had more talent than most of the Cup field at this time in lesser equipment. Winning in the #10 there and giving props to the Hendrick motor reminds me a bit of Kyle Larson driving for avg to futile CGR but having the Hendrick motor.

I watched Johnny Benson Sr. at Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI when I was kid nearly every week. Sr. was FANTASTIC and won the track championship several times. Johnny Jr. was then able to take what he learned from his dad and move into the majors. Johnny Jr. is the best NASCAR racer to only score 1 victory. Good but somewhat tragic career.

This was great documentary that you were able to feature a guy i liked since the BGN days. I always felt he just needed a good ride to be a true contender. I didnt think when he was at Roush he got the best equipment or power plants. But I always had faith in his ability to drive a car and at Daytona in 2000 when that white car was running strong I felt he had a real good shot at winning that 500. I just hate it that he was surrounded by the blue oval gang and no one else in the GM camp could of helped him out. 'right place at the wrong time'. As a Pontiac fan I always thought those Grand Prixs were stout and aero balanced, so those cars were becoming pretty darn competitive week in and week out. Once Valvoline jumped onboard I bought my 1st JB tshirt at MIS and I still have decal on my 14" igloo cooler. Every year when I traveled to MIS i pulled for him to win, that is if Earnhardt wasn't doing so hot. But I was real happy for the guy when he finally got his 1st cup win and it was a long time coming. The truck title was equally as deserved and it goes to show you, the guy can win at just about anything with good equipment. Benson represented what nice guys can be as a racer and he earned my respect as a fan of his. I never knew he got an offer to race indy cars, that would be interesting to see it and raises the question 'what if'. I heard awhile back after he stopped racing that he purchased Kalamazoo Speedway and now I ain't to sure now if he still runs it...never the less thanks for posting this up. The 90s and early 2000 really had some real talent in the Cup Series, glad JB was part of that group.

Seems like a nice guy. It’s funny how he starts every interview with “I’ll tell you what”.

My first ever Cup race was at Miami 2008. Unfortunately we over-lapped our plAns and couldn't head to the track for crowning night. Just an all around humble teacher looking guy that happens to drive a stock car:P

Making a pilgrimage back after Benson gets to replace Paul Tracy for SRX at Berlin. Hope Johnny runs a white 10 and brings it home!

Brock, when I was younger, I can remember seeing the looney tunes on a car (forget the number). I noticed “turner broadcasting” as an owner during the footage of a qualifying session. It brought back old memories when I first started watching nascar with my grandpa. I would root for the looney tunes car every race that I saw it in. I don’t know that much about it, and I think it would be a great episode in your “rise of the field fillers” series.

@@JR-ls9fq It was the Melling #9. They also had Cartoon Network and Hanna Barbera schemes, they ran those paint schemes through most of the 90s.
