I was fortunate to be somewhat involved with NASCAR back in the 1990s and got to be around a lot of these guys. I always found the majority of them to be very down to earth and willing to spent their precious time with you if only briefly. I always pulled for Johnny Benson even though I don't think I ever formally met him because he seemed like such a humble person. Back then almost all the drivers had to work their way up and prove themselves at each level unlike a lot of the rich kids of today.

No idea JB had such a deep mechanical background. At one time it seemed like he was winning every race entered. What a class act.

Back in the day you really needed to get involved in the little bits and pieces of your car and team by yourself if you wanted a winning car with a non-HMS or Roush subsidy budget, it kinda also gave birth to the Owner-Driver concept. Even nowadays, look at some of the small teams on Xfinity and Truck series doing a lot of "Out of the box" homebilt, Driver-Owner and grass roots stuff, good examples are Jeremy Clements, Brandon Brown, Brayton Laster, Timmy and Ty Hill and even Ross Chastain had his beginings like that grinding on his own super late models and modifieds down in Florida, while he also ran low funded rides on Trucks and Xfinity.

JB is a very nice person. Always treated his fans and sponsors with kind respect. Glad to see he is doing well 2021. Loved the Setzer reference. Dennis Setzer is truly NASCAR to its core...also a Howdy to Jimmy, Dick and Chuck Bown Caraway Speedway... Tons of fun...

Johnny Benson was at Brainerd International Raceway's road course with the ASA cars in 1993. He qualified in second place but had a little trouble and finished outside the top ten. After the race, I was walking through the pits taking pictures of some of the cars. Johnny's car had the rear end jacked up to change tires or something. I kneeled down to take a picture when he walked over and said, "wait, I'll get it off the jack so it will look a little better." He proceeded to lower the jack and pull it out of the way. He was very personable and chatted for a few moments. He was the series champion that year before moving on to NASCAR.

He would of had a much better career if he had turned down the cup seat. He fizzled out in cup couldn't keep up with the big money. Still my favorite car and driver combination. Even more then Jeff Gordon. Anytime I saw that Pennzoil car on the track with Jonny in it I wanted him to win.

The blood splattering effect on D.M. in the opening has to go. Makes no sense. "We talked to Dave while there was an axe murder going on..."
