I think Burton was highly underestimated. Trying doing commentary on matches without sounding like a babbling fool, or getting overly technical (which a random viewer could give two hoots about). You have to find a balance, and most people have not refined such a presentation.

As I’m watching this match, I’m thinking to myself, I don’t know what’s better: the rhythm and timing of JP’s arm swing or Shenkel and Burton’s commentary. NBJ is one of the all time great analysts in any sport. His economy of words and sheer edge of emotion are absolutely perfect. I’ve been a sports commentator for 27 years and this pairing was incredible. These two were born to be bowling commentators. NBJ is at his very best this match.

Being a lefty, Johnny is one of my heroes. I'm glad I ran across this. In person I once saw him throw 22 strikes in a row in a qualifying block in a PBA tournament at Tropicana in St. Louis. He left a ten pint to start a game then finished with 11 in a row and started the next game with 11 in a row before leaving a seven pin.

he was a big fixture at carolier lanes in north brunswick, NJ -- he was there quite often, coaching and helping others -- unfortunately for me he was not very nice to me -- this was back in the late 80s -- i heard allot of nice things about him, he coached allot of kids but never gave me a chance and i resented him for it - i was hoping back then being a fellow lefty that perhaps he could have helped me and he didn't want to be bothered at all - there was no amount of money for him to spend a few minutes with me -- after that when i seen him out there, i never said a word to him again -- semiz was actually very nice when he was there running the pro shop with OJ and Semiz helped me quite a bit to figure out some of the problems i faced - unless you were in John's circle he would not give you the time of day. way of life back in the 80s and 90s.

They should make the reward for a 300 game back to $100,000 again. There was a brief time when even the $10,000 was dropped, unless you were wearing the right sponsor's shirt. In the early days of bowling it was $10,000. For a while it was $100,000 (Bob Benoit's game) and since then it has varied.

Pizza, thank you so much for posting this! Exciting, glorious. Makes my heart hurt for how awesome professional bowling was back in the day. Notice, no screaming, no chest pounding. Just good sportsmanship. Did you notice Walter Ray gave him 5 after #11? And after #8, when Petraglia wrapped up the match, Walter Ray congratulated him at the ball return. I tell you, anymore, the only professional bowling I watch is the Ladies tour. At least there, they show sportsmanship, they show some CLASS. They don't have these bullshit rivalries, they don't have their best bowler (Belmonte) doing bullshit angle shooting like squeezing his water bottle or putting his towel on his opponent's ball. Oh well, don't get me started.

Full disclosure: I mostly play 5-pin. But I used to drill balls in a 5-10 house. (Yes, in Canada.) The impressive aspect of this game was that all 10 were solidly in the pocket and only that last 2 or 3 were at all "mixey". Question: Do the new balls make it impossible for old school, lower "surface" balls get to the pocket safely (even with asymmetrical weight blocks and all) because the more "powerful" balls are soaking up all the oil and leaving no oiled path to the pocket?
