The Emperor is basically Doom Guy, he conquered hell to avenge his Behemoth pet.

I love the story on why the Ultima spell is so weak. It's a "bug," but technically it's so much more. I guess several developers on FF2 noticed the problem, so Sakaguchi (the game's director) went to the coder responsible, who gave him this line about how Ultima was supposed to be weak because it was old, and newer spells would naturally be more powerful due to increases in magical knowledge over the years. Dude refused to fix it. So Sakaguchi decided to go over his head and fix the bug himself, but found the coder had written the game using a cipher (encryption), meaning nobody could edit the code except for him. Ergo, the game shipped with the ultimate magic being "bugged", except it wasn't a bug at all -- it was a stubborn, rebellious programmer.

"Unless he takes over super hell." The GBA/PSP ports add *Soul of Rebirth* side story, all the *dead* party members fight through *heaven* to kill the Emperor who over took god.

Continuing the trend set by Mario 2, Zelda 2, Castlevania 2 and Metroid 2, here's a sequel that experiments and changes the gameplay quite significantly before going back to refining the original gameplay style with the third entry

"GUY SPEAK BEAVER" is my favorite moment of this entire game.

The use of "Forward and Back" was a major push for me to eventually start playing through XIV. Under 2 months of waiting and over 2 months of playing, I'm currently in the Stormblood patches. You did this to me, Johnny.

The Emperor of Palamecia, the only Final Fantasy villain you can't say "Go to Hell!" to him. The music of this game is majestic. Rebel Army's Theme is a piece of art :,)

The whole "adoptive family falls in love" thing is actually a pretty big trope in Japan...both in stories and in real life. It is not uncommon for a family to "adopt" another member into their family as sort of a precursor to a not-so-arranged marriage. It's just not weird for them, like it is for us.

Ah the Ultima spell I’m not surprised Johnny was disappointed by it considering that in the original game it’s bugged and does not work properly. It’s supposed to do more damage based on how many proficiency levels you have gained it does not do that at all and instead does pitiful damage. Sakaguchi caught the bug during testing and went to Nasir the main programmer to get him fix it his response was the following: *”All of that legendary stuff, it dates back to an age that didn’t even have the proper techniques. If you were to look at such things now in the present’s point-of-view, it would be natural that they look inferior. For this reason it’s a given that Ultima’s abilities would be bad.”* *” As for those who struggled and ultimately acquired it only to find out that it’s useless... well, that’s something that happens often in life. So, I’m not going to fix it!”* Sakaguchi was furious he demanded Nasir hand over the source code and was going to fix it himself. Only to later realize that the code had been ciphered meaning the only one who could fix it was Nasir making it impossible to correct. It’s truly an ironic story that adds to the flavor of Final Fantasy 2 unique development.

The real queen was actually just never rescued in the first place. Not captured again. It was the Lamia that was "rescued" the first time.

I love that Johnny gave Clement a shoutout for his Final Fantasy retrospective. I’ve been slowly watching those videos as I play the games myself and it’s such a joy to hear Clement’s thoughts on the series.

These gags MUST become a regular thing. This episode was great. The FIRE spell, the little singing bit, and the "Hooray a corpse!" thing are great examples of this.

Emperor Mateus... Out of original nes Final Fantasies, He’s my favorite. He does heinous acts, Gets killed at the middle of the game, Goes to hell and takes over it, and If you’re playing the remake versions, his Soul goes to heaven and takes over the heaven.... Honestly the psp version is worth it bc it really adds more character and dialogue throughout the game, the ost is fire, and the grind is reduced by a lot. Plus the bonus dungeon is kinda fun

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Soul of Rebirth mode in later versions of the game, where you play as the dead playable characters (Minwu, Josef and Ricard) plus Scott, and you end up facing the Emperor of Heaven (because this douche actually split himself into two to rule both heaven and hell).

FF2 is my favorite game of the NES trilogy, anybody wanting to play this should either pick up the PSP version or the mobile ports. They cut down on the encounter rate, generously give more stat gains, remove stat lowering when not using said stat, and the charges to level up magic are drastically reduced (getting a lvl 1 to a lvl2 spell takes 5-10 casts as oppose to 50-100 casts in the original.)

That NES Jank of targeting the emperor reminds me of a favorite homebrew spell among DnD fans. “Screw that one guy in particular” it targets anyone on the plane of existence RANDOMLY and hits them with a bolt of lightning. Thing is, if the same spell is used again by ANYONE in the world before a full minute passes, that SAME person will get struck by lightning again.

There's only one thing I've learned from this review.... We need Johnny to release a full version of his cover of the Cruise Chaser Theme

From what I remember, the guy who programmed the Ultima spell thought it would be funny to make it severely underpowered despite how lore relevant and overly powerful it's supposed to be. And to make matters worse, the dude was the only one who could decipher the source code, so nobody could figure out how to fix it in time for the release. Or so they say.

One thing this game does that I love but really isn’t explained at all is that enemies actually do give different “experience” rewards. I think it’s labeled ranks in later versions but you actually get more poin for your stat increase based on how strong an enemy is and how strong you are. So attacking beginner enemies as an endgame party is gonna give minimum or nothing but attacking higher level enemies when you’re weaker will give you a higher experience gain and can make leveling much faster, on top of spells having their own basic point total they gain per use. Cure getting 2 per use, fire getting 3 etc

I love that you're doing this marathon, right in the middle of me playing through the entire series myself. makes me excited to see the rest of the episodes in this series. also the ancient sword solves the issue of mobs taking almost no damage towards the end of the game, Curse makes the mob take full dmg from your attacks.

Which emperor tried harder: this one or Palpatine? Sure Palpatine took over the whole Galaxy and built two Death stars, but this one came back to take his castle back and presumably took over Hell just to do so.
