John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

yeah, same here, all the way back to 1971 or 72 whenever it was.I used to think he had been sneaking and reading my mail, getting info from people who knew me intimately, listening to me carry on through the thin walls of my old Baltimore apartment. Nobody told our stories the way he did....nobody made a beautiful futile sense of it all the way he did. John passed on just two weeks after I buried my mom, who at the age of 95 realized it was time to get out of here. Just in time for this goddam virus. I am blessed to have loved both of them.

Twenty two years ago I took my oldest daughter to her first John Prine concert. I had sung her to sleep over the years with "Blue Umbrella" and she brought a blue umbrella to the show. We sat near the front and early in the show John saw her and nodded. Late in the show he sang "Blue Umbrella" to her. "Many years later," I took my youngest daughter to her first John Prine concert. She had been sung to sleep with "One Red Rose," and she took a red rose to the concert. Once again we sat toward the front, and John noticed her and nodded. Late in the concert he sang "One Red Rose." So this man that I already loved so much performed this enormous act of kindness towards my two daughters. I miss him so much, it is hard getting used to living in a world without John Prine in it.

At my first Vietnam Vet rap group we all had to introduce ourselves.First names only. I decided to use a first and last name,when it was my turn. I just said "John Stone" Every Vet in the group looked up,smiled and nodded . We all knew what that song meant to us.His music has never left me from the first time I heard that haunting song right up to this day. So at 72 years old I sat around tonight watched the tribute and cried like a new born and laughed like tickled 5 year old. Thanks Brother You always had my six

Years ago i took my wife and kids from Boston to the Beacon theater in nyc to see John , my god what an experience that was ! We saw an audience so enthralled by this man, and who hung on his every word and showed the utmost respect for a performer i have ever seen . Time has past, kids have grown, but my love for this sage of a man has not diminished. . God Bless Jim

This man is easily one of the deepest, most unaffected poets in modern history. His music is beautiful yet stark, his melodies are haunting and his lyrics alternately reach, crush and restore a soul. This man is to be revered if not for his music, then for the breadth of his soul, at the very least. Please appreciate the depth of this art. Your soul will be enriched.

I never knew who John Prine was until I heard of his passing. I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to music. I have been exploring John's music for the last 5 weeks and I can say that he, without a doubt, has become my most favorite song writer of all time. Such simple song structure with such a powerful message. I'm sad I never got to see you perform John. I hope you are having your vodka and ginger ale next to peaceful waters.

Yes, you arrived late to the party. John doesn't mind though. He wrote many many songs. My guess is, around 300? Every one, a treasure. I first heard about John in the mid 80's. I bought his albums, got to see him perform once in '94. His music has a life sustaining quality. Peace, love and Prine.

My father passed away last year. This song came on randomly when I was driving home from his funeral. I had never heard it before but it was perfect. I'm so grateful for John's music. Truly a legend. My heart goes out to his family who also lost him last year. He will live forever in song and memory.

It's a beautiful morning in Maine and I'm crying my eyes out listening to this song. I'm here because my sister in law is slowly but surely losing her battle with cancer. This song keeps popping up in my head because it says exactly what I would feel like if I lost my love too early in life. But every time I try to sing it my eyes water and my nose starts running. Must be the pollen. Thank you John for writing this song. If it had to be your last you left us a gem.

I wasn't aware of Mr. Prine very early in my life but my brother knew who he was. He shared his love of John Prine and I immediately became a lifelong fan. Sadly my brother passed away three weeks ago. We never had the opportunity to talk about this particular song but it made me think of my brother when it first came out. I considered my brother to be sort of the memory of our family. If there ever was a dispute between any of my siblings about long-ago memories we would turn to him to settle the conflict. It's so sad that he was taken by a horrible disease that robbed him and us of his memories(glioblastoma). That's why this song now carries enormous emotional baggage. As much as I will never forget John Prine I will not ever forget my brother, Mathew/

I've listened to John since the 80s..today was a very incredible day. The love of my life died in '21..I thought I had cried every tear. Then this song opens in my algorithm on the very day I had to get all my paperwork together to apply for my survivor benefits. I had just dumped/recycle ALL our wedding cards and childrens birth cards. I got home, shut off my car and listened to this song. 😓..I will never forget this day. it has been a healing like no other day prior. ThankU for this share. It's on repeat for the rest of the day.❤

My JP story. In 1975 my wife and I decided to give Australia a second chance so we flew to Singapore and then boarded a boat for Perth. While boarding we met this young Aussie guy with a nice guitar and I asked him what type of music he liked. He said we would not have heard of him but it was a guy named John Prine. I then showed him what I had in my rucksack.All JPs LPs at the time. He was gobsmacked and asked me to help him with the words of Paradise. I did my best. The night before we docked at Perth we had a concert and he sang Paradise beatifully for me and Janet. I may have shed a tear.

My John Prine story: In the summer of 2013 I was a Bus Operator driving a regular daily bus route from El Paso, Texas to Las Cruces, New Mexico called the Texas/New Mexico Park & Ride. Most of the commuters were students from El Paso going to NMSU, or El Paso residents working in Las Cruces or White Sands Missle Range and vice versa. Las Cruces residents going to school at UTEP or working in El Paso. One morning I'm boarding passengers in downtown El Paso and this one fellow catches my eye. There are homeless shelters near both the downtown El Paso bus stop and the downtown Las Cruces stop, so alot of these characters hopped between shelters on a regular basis. So I eyed him over making sure he was clean and not sneaking in some alcohol as some tended to do. He looked alright and he took a seat a couple of rows behind me. As I got on I-10 he started singing, not too loud, but singing to himself and chuckling at himself and the lyrics he was singing. It took me awhile but I finally realized he was singing John Prine songs. Souvenirs, Dear Abbey, Hello in There and on and on. With 3 stops between El Paso and Las Cruces the drive takes about an hour and fifteen. The whole way he sort of softly sang one song after another. I knew it was kind of annoying some of the passengers seated near him, but no one audibly complained. And even if they did, I wasn't about to ask him to stop. This was a John Prine sort of person. When we reached Las Cruces and as he walked down the steps of the bus I called out to him. A little startled, he turned around and I told him, "thanks for the John Prine concert!" I think I made his day...and John Prine made ours.

I was the one who turned my Mom onto John Prine, in a way. I was 30 when I moved back in with my parents for @ 6 months during my horrible divorce. Mom heard me playing John's music on my stereo, and the song "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" just blew her away. She came in the room with tears in her eyes, asked me to play it again, then we both hugged and cried as we listened to the lyrics. She loved music, and had excellent taste. Later I smiled as I heard her singing from the kitchen in her lovely contralto voice, "What in the world's come over you?..." She would be 100 this year if she were still with us, and I still miss her every day.

When I, a 65 year old man, can feel so saddened by the passing of this man, it says a great deal about him. From the first time I heard his voice through this last song, he is as important an American voice as any we have ever had the great fortune to have had. If he had heard someone say that to his face he would have shrugged and laughed it off. Thankfully his words are with us still.

M.g. that is john gentle and humble. We are so fortunate to be in his time. feels like I lost my very bestfreind and I never met him. The music haunts me. I have no more. Words it hurts so much .if. You told him you loved him and his.music He would answer with two words thank you. Humble and gratious to the very end. Rip john prine. All our love always and forever.

His voice became so powerful as he aged. I remember in an interview with Terry Gross, he discussed talking with his doctor about an upcoming surgery and the doctor had concerns about how his voice would sound afterwards and John replied, "Have you ever heard me sing?"

A couple of years ago our daughter had a still born baby girl, full term. Our daughter and husband have been blessed with another little girl. I pray that you all will overcome this heartbreak and be blessed with other children.

I never got to meet him but I went to see him play in Mobile Alabama.. I was playing pinball in a bar afterward and looked up to see John playing the machine next to me. I was too overwhelmed to speak but just getting to play pinball next to my hero was a great honor.

My John Prine story: My wife and I went to see JP a few years ago in PA. During intermission we went out to the lobby and Jason Wilber was at the table where they were selling CDs, hats, t-shirts etc. We got to talking with JW and told him that we were recently married and one of the songs played at the wedding was "In Spite of Ourselves" as it kinda reminding us of us. JW said to write down that little story and he would try to pass the note along to JP. Well after intermission and the audience had settled down we noticed JW walk up to John, whisper in his ear and gave him a piece of paper. John smiled and turned to the audience and said he had a special request to sing "In Spite of Ourselves" for some newly weds. He said he doesn't normally play this as it is a duet with a female singer, but he said he never sung the female part before so it may be a little fun. And he played the song, sang both parts to the hilarious audience. He seemed to really get a kick out of doing that for us and we were gobsmaked that he did. Thank you John for singing it for us and thank you Jason for making it happen.

John, you're missed! My poet laureate, America's soul. I had the privilege of taking my new bride to John's concert at Center Stage in midtown Atlanta in the mid-80's. I was surprised but thrilled that John walked on stage alone, no backup musicians. The audience was silent, captivated by the Master. John played solo for 90-minutes, took one very short break. The lyrics and music were perfection. It's been several years since John passed but he is not forgotten. John, I wish you peace. I hope Steve and you are reunited. The music is alive.

John sat with me in my dump hotel room while I recorded my song set with him and Joni as my only audience..I know what heaven is..been there...when he Sings he remembers every hotel room..I am there again..John nodding "next' with a smile that motivates me to this day... On this dark, rainy Christmas Eve, as I face the reality that I am getting old, and I think of my father's last hours that I shared with him not so long ago... I can't get this song out of my head. Was a fan of John Prine from sometime in the early '70s, until he left us. Spent a few nights in small venues with him. I remember a lot. Thank you, John, and please give my regards to The Big Man, as I know you have his ear. See ya soon.

This simple but beautiful song exemplifies everything about why John Prine endeared himself to so many people. Unique voice.....a story teller....comforting relaxing pace.....a guitar well played....without any drama or props.....song after song and year after year. To me, he was more than an entertainer. He was, and will forever be, a dear friend who I have spent endless hours with. I wish I could have met him.

Getting old sucks. I have loved this man for damn near 50yrs. Feels like a lover that broke my heart. Hope he sees me in the afterlife , cause I will be looking for him. Love is such a gift!! I feel so privileged to have walked on this earth during the lifetime of this super talent and special man. In this cruel world his songs and music made life beautiful and bearable. No doubt John you are in heaven. John Prine will live forever in our hearts and minds into future generations. His last song is as prescient and poignant as his first. The Tree of Forgiveness album also proves that John Prine was always right on point, and right on time.

Thank you so much to all who have shared personal stories about their singing idol, or best friend they never knew. My wife and I heard John in concert with Iris Dement at the Ryman a few years ago. He sang all the duets he had recorded with her, and some that she stood in for others. After John had sung for nearly three hours without a break, he shouted out to the crowd, "Have ya'll had enough?" And the place went wild. After that, he said the same thing about every twenty minutes, and the crowd kept getting louder and louder every time he would say that. He finally ended the concert after four hours of performing non-stop. It was a remarkable feat that I will never forget. And I know what it takes to perform for three hours even with breaks.
