On Easter Sunday, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, described the government's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda as "opposite the nature of God".
But the Prime Minister hit back, claiming in a meeting with MPs that the Archbishop had criticised the Rwanda deal more than Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Labour leader Keir Starmer called on the Prime Minister to apologise for his comments, but Johnson refused.
#Newsnight’s Political Editor Nick Watt explains how the spat came about, and the history between the Church and politics.

After reading the majority of the comments, it's pretty obvious as to what society has come to. I've seen some people in the comments being completely oblivious to the definitions of some things in an attempt to blame one side or the other of the political spectrum. For example, several comments called the Church of England "woke" because of the Archbishop of Canterbury's sermon in which he condemned the Rwanda policy. Woke does not mean immigration, it usually refers to the discrimination of a particular social group, race, etc. I even saw a few comments stating that the Archbishop should shut up and that he knows nothing of politics at the same time of saying falsities about the Anglican Church. And anyway, the Archbishop of Canterbury is permitted to speak on politics and have a say in politics because of the governmental structure of the United Kingdom. As Archbishop, Justin Welby has a seat in the House of Lords, and is therefore technically required to scrutinise the government. I am not a particular fan of church and state being combined, but that's how it is in the United Kingdom, and until then, senior members of the clergy in the Church of England who have a seat in Parliament should be able to make political comments without backlash due to merely making a comment.

@@bl00dhoneythe archbishop of Canterbury needs to separate in his mind when he is speaking of politics unless it has something to do with the church. But he needs to be objective he cannot just say well the church will agree to this and the church can do this and vice versa. It is well stated in the Bible that God separated the authorities between the church and the state and he needs to abide by that being in archbishop

GAFCON kicked out the Archbishop of Canterbury a few weeks ago and is now no longer the Prima Inter Pares, "the first among equals of the Anglican communion." This is one of the biggest movements of gospel integrity in the Anglican church since the days of the English reformation. This is so inspirational, so powerful and brings the uniting of Christians around the world. He is the cancer in Christianity and Charles’s servant in deed

Tim Farron is bang on I totally agree. He’s an Archbishop in the UK and his concern is within the UK. It’s totally relevant and having him out down and use the Ukrainian conflict to paint him negatively is a weak move and shows that the conflict there is just trendy rather than having sincere heartbreak on the matter. I think most people will know that any bishop or priest or cardinal or simply any decent person faithful or non faithful is appalled by the Ukraine situation. However it doesn’t mean you ignore what’s going on domestically in your own country.

How Tim Farron can be a member of the Lib Dems - a party with so many positions opposite to his own faith is beyond me. All very strange. And he supports the Archbishop who has never spoken a true Christian sentence anytime I have heard him. It is all just the ‘social gospel’ nothing to do with true Christianity.

The Archbishop is a politician himself. He sits on the fence regarding the major moral questions of our day, and is basically ‘all things to all men’. He is not a true champion of Christianity at all, he is a man who has had some sort of ‘religious experience’, but that is not true Christian conversion. The Church of England is full of such men and women, most of the Bishops are not true Christians but are just ‘religious’ people, which counts for nothing and they do not believe in the truth of Scripture, one of the most important things that Christ affirms. Kier Starmer hasn’t got a clue!

The arch bishop can do jacksh** about the invasion, he has continually condemned it. While being a good samaritan to people in need seeing refugee in or from the UK is another thing, for which he wishes to hold the UK accountable for. BoJo's bombastic drivel is just that, shipping the unfortunates plucked from the channel to Rwanda. Will do nothing to stop the trafficking. The crooks will have been paid and they still get to dumped the unfortunates on inflatables in the channel anyway. As one Tory MP has already pointed out. Better to spend the at least £120 million (and who knows what the true cost will creep up to be) on improving refugee claimants processing in the UK, than offshoring them to Rwanda. Just look at Australia's experiences and costs of attempting it in New Guinea, the Solomon's, Cambodia etc......

It's all because of the idea that parliament should be sovereign to all else, that no outside bodies or fundamental law can be used to hold it to account. Romans 13:1-7 ESV / 29 helpful votes Helpful Not Helpful Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.

Covid rules section 73 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984. This part of the Act states that the Covid regulations, at all times, never applied to Crown Land (which includes No. 10). This only changed if No. 10 made a written agreement to be voluntarily bound - and no one thinks they did. So the regulations almost certainly never applied to No. 10 anyway. Why would this be? The reason is simple: in the 1980s, lawmakers decided that it would be better to allow the government to function during any future national pandemic without having to worry about being caught up in quarantine regulations. The thinking was that by making the government effectively exempt in law, the government could continue to function. In addition to the 1984 Act, there were also specific regulations that applied at the time of the alleged party: the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020. According to these rules, gatherings were allowed in all public buildings, or parts of them ‘operated by a business, a charitable, benevolent or philanthropic institution or a public body.’ There had to be a risk assessment but a gathering was legal for whole swathes of people. So it seems likely that whatever happened in Downing Street was legal. Of course, this won't placate Boris Johnson's critics - nor will it do much to dent the attacks on the PM. But these people can rest assured that the law was not broken. In our legal system, people are innocent until proven guilty. People do not get to just say that crimes occurred and then demand that someone prove themselves innocent. Criminal lawyers will grandiosely call this ‘the golden thread’ that runs through their area of law. It applies to people they don’t like as much as those they do. And it should apply in this case. Far worse than this though is that another greater wrong has occurred. The public have been mistakenly told that some people are above the law. No one is above the law. That is what the rule of law means. If public confidence in that is undermined then that is a very serious issue. People need to stop playing politics with the law. Aye well Steve Barratt is missing the point. It’s not going against the letter of the law that’s upset people it’s the absolute disregard for the morals and standards behind it. And anyway surely if it was actually the case that number 10 was exempt then there wouldn’t have been any fines would there because some smartarse would have been plastering it all over the media beforehand and the Met wouldn’t have had to pretend to do something about it? 🤔

Tha archbishop should be totally ashamed o himself standing in the way of ending this disgusting trade in human life crossing the channel that indangers so many lives! And did the archbishop have any other answers to end this unsastanble probelem? No! If can not give a better answer, don't mock or criticise others that can!

So everyone should just pretend that a bad idea is actually a good one just because they don't have a better solution? Well I see the authoritarians have got you thoroughly indoctrinated. Deporting refugees to an African backwater isn't going to stop the human trafficking across the channel, it's merely going to endager those who survive it by dumping them in a hole half way across the world.

You really think the Rwanda idea was the result of a long and thoughtful process of deliberation and research on the best solution to this intractable problem? Or maybe just a distraction from BOJO’S party gate scandal? If you believe in the former, than I have a bridge that I think you maybe interested in. Armageddon I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. (Revelation 16:16.) the spirits of devils: Named Legion in Luke 8:30. A Roman legion consists of 6,000 men. Three unclean spirits like frog. Meaning so many of them around as Exodus 8. Don’t forget who’s the dragon! Revelation 12:9. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 7,000-6,000=1,000. Satan with his 1,000 fallen angels are booted out of heaven and joining forces with Legion on earth to form the destroyers of Exodus 12. As foretold in Jude 14 Genesis 6 one more time. the kings of the earth and of the whole world The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world. The wholesale slaughter in the end time. Starts at The first seal. Matthew 24:4. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. For suckers only. 😆 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. Armageddon: Mountain of Megiddo that belongs to Manasseh. Joshua 17:11. We know mountain is nation. Revelation 17:9, 10. Manasseh was born in Egypt. The name means forgetfulness. Most scholars believe USA 🇺🇸 is Manasseh. Don’t forget what’s Egypt! Revelation 11:8. Perverts bullying is Egypt. Unfit to be called Jerusalem. No peace of mind. Biden is shaking hand with an unclean spirit. 😆
