Outstanding video. The detailed commentary and close-up video was especially helpful for me to reassemble my neighbor's snow blower that I messed up by removing the bowl to drain old gas when the float pin fell out. I then lost the needle valve & spring also. Using your video I purchased the kit from a local small engine repair shop and "carefully" replaced the missing parts and put it back together. Thank You for making a video with enough details to show and explain how things (should) work.

I worked in a small engine repair shop for a while. For carb bowls that had buildup like yours did, we used a Dremel instead of a wire brush to clean it. Works like a charm!

I used to manufacture tools one of the items was a plastic magnetic ring that went around a screwdriver. I called it a Stayzon®️ that would be very helpful when inserting a screw into the carburetor. You can also get larger ones that will work with sockets or I’ve even used them when drilling steel to collect metal shavings. I enjoy your videos!

I have a 1984 Sears lawn mower that I refuse to let die. That Tecumseh is an amazing engine and just keeps working. Much larger oil capacity, gas capacity and power compared to the Sears Honda I bought to replace it (but only used for a couple of weeks because its under powered). The mower base is mainly made out of pop rivets and sheet metal at this point, but it still does the job. Had fuel delivery issue and took carb apart (first time in 40 years). I was cleaning it with compressed air and blew the needle seat somewhere in my shop so the job grew from a quick clean to a carb rebuild. Although needle/seat/gasket kits are cheap online ( you can get multiple kits for under $20 - no idea if they are any good), I just went to my local supplier and got one for $10 CAD. Thanks for the guidance. Much appreciated - especially the orientation of the seat. I just reassembled it this afternoon, flushed the tank out and that engine started right up and purrs better than it has in the 24 years since I inherited it from the previous house owner.

Certainly the art of carburetor rebuilding is slowly dying and being replaced by cheap foreign knock-off replacement parts. Nice to see this video being thorough. While foreign components may work fine, those foreign parts are typically not built to the same tolerances as the OEM parts and usually do not last very long. I have been rebuilding carburetors for 55 years since I was 12 years old (just for fun) so I can share a few thoughts. First there is no single correct way to do a rebuild. Use whatever tools you may think you need keeping in mind that nothing should be unreasonably forced. Soaking a carb body in mineral spirits or kerosene will help loosen gunk build up in older seldom used carburetors. Compressed air is a great way to clear orifices in the main valve and carb body, but be careful not to blowout a seat that you are not replacing. Sometimes a rebuild will seem too simple and you might second guess if you did it correctly. Trust yourself and your work. Carburetors are meant to be repaired fairly easily. The engineering is built into the designs. All you are doing is a refresh. Wear eye protection especially when using chemicals, and wear gloves especially if you have allergies, skin conditions, etc. If you put a good hand lotion on before you work it will help your hands clean up afterwards and protect your skin a bit better. Enjoy the time and the dying art. Its rewarding.

Thank you! I agree the older engines are better. If you can get non ethanol fuel that is the key in keeping the carburetors in good condition after rebuilding. Look at Aspen fuel online and read up on it. It is a great product.

Thank you for this great tour! It pointed out a couple mistakes I made rebuilding one that was almost the exact same. Mine has a metal float and an idle needle. Was having a leak which seems to be fixed but I'm still having an issue where it seems to drink up the gas in the bowl and kill the engine faster than new fuel is delivered. Even though it flows fine with the bowl off and the float dangling. I might need to play with the float adjustment some more. We'll see if a ROP shop carb does any better.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
The surging is a blocked port. You will need to rebuild it again. I would also check the fuel tank for debris. If it doesn’t work the next cleaning, you will need to replace it. Make sure your you also have fresh gas in the tank.

Glad to hear! You may want to look into buying Aspen4 fuel if you can get it. It will keep you from having gas going bad and having to rebuild your carburetor. Check it out online and read up on it. It’s not for everybody but it is 92 octane no ethanol very clean burning, and will help with easier starts and you’ll be able to store in your machine for up to two years. You must only use this by itself and do not mix with other gas. I cannot recommend this fuel enough. Thanks for watching my video. Please share my channel with your friends to help it grow! If it is a non adjustable carburetor? Sometimes it may take 5 to ten minutes if run time to start running good. The carburetor needs to warm up and that is difficult to due when it’s freezing outside.

I am a very lucky person as my Tecumseh carburetor is so rare, it must be worth an absolute fortune. It is a '9' Series Carburetor (9004 L6R) and I am trying to get a service kit and '172' replacement fixed jet, but nobody in the UK seems to have heard of it. I wonder if a normal service kit and adjustable jet bowl nut would get it back into service? Very frustrating.

I've been having a surging problem with a yardman snowblower. My bowl is sitting a little high due to a swollen pin seal. I think I heard you mention that it means it won't then get enough fuel ? gonna take a look tomorrow. Or the surge could be normal as you mentioned gonna let it run longer but - what happens if the float is too high? (upside down view) Nice video.

To get the correct float level, first you should install a new seat into the carburetor then adjust the float tab to get the correct float level.

good video! when I prime it, gas leaks from carb over the float bowl any ideas?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines 7 ай бұрын
When you prime the carburetor, it is designed to be pumped up into the throat of the carburetor. If you over prime it, it will flow out of the front of the carburetor and seam like it is leaking. It may just be over primed.

So I'm in the process of troubleshooting my old Ariens mower. Pretty sure its the carb and there's some issues of fuel not getting to the carb b/c it will run if we pour fuel down into the Air intake. If all else fails and I need a new carb where do I find one? The carb is a Tecumseh 632524. It is from a TVS120-63111F on my Ariens 911016 mower from the 80's. Your video has been exactly what I'm looking for though, I didn't realize how many other small holes there are that I need to poke out and spray carb clean on. sheesh

I doubt you can get the original manufacturer carburetor any longer. I would suggest cleaning your original carburetor in a ultrasonic cleaner and rebuild it. You should be able to still get the original manufacturer parts for it either online or local lawn mower shop.

I have this carb on my tiller. Rebuilt it using B&S kit and it responded great. Engine starts and runs very well with the exception of running rich. Any advice on what may be causing this! Did not change the emulsion tube as I’m not sure it had/has one.

Check to make sure your float does not have fuel in it? but it’s obvious, you do not use a Briggs & Stratton kit for a Tecumseh carburetor. If you have the Original Equipment Manufacturer Tecumseh carburetor, you will have a emulsion tube and I replace all.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I should have been more clear. I have a B&S engine and carb and I was asking more to the point of a non adjustable carb running rich. I looked on the parts diagram and there is no emulsion tube in this carb. I did buy a new float but didn’t install it as it was running so well I figured I’d leave well enough alone. If this can be an issue I’ll definitely install the new float. Thanks for an in-depth video and also for the quick reply.

Ooooooo! Yes you are correct, no emulsion tube for the Briggs carburetor. I have not had the greatest luck rebuilding the Briggs non adjustable carburetor. I now normally just replace them as I have learn that Briggs is using China to make some of there carburetors and you can get a reasonably priced carburetor on Amazon. Most I have had good luck with. I hope you figure it out. Let me know when you do as I am always interested.
