The Johnstown Galleria...Zamias' Seafoam Sentinel. Such a fantastic mall. I really hope this place succeeds, despite running on just one senior anchor, amidst a sea of dead outparcels. We'll see! Stay safe out there, stay home if you can, and I'll see you weekly until we're out of the woods.

EDIT: When I was there, the first floor of JCPenney was being liquidated of stock, and the mall entrance into the first floor was closed. The store is closed right now, and Boscovs is showing that it may be open. A rash of closings were announced for JCP, and it is currently closed. I may have misspoke, as it’s still possible for the JCP to reopen, but given their latest news fighting bankruptcy, it looks grim for the retailer. I just wanted to clear that up, since it’s possible for the JCP to reopen. Sorry!!! Thank you all for watching! ExLog 61 will finally bring the story of the nasty Indiana Mall Cop into the DMOD canon next week....stay tuned... Catch up on the full Expedition Log Series! May 2021 Johnstown Update: JCP is open a and using both floors. They have multiple mall entrances and the one by the Boscov's across from the food court escalators is open. The one by the play area is still closed. But it's still a functional store. Nothing is in the Sears or Bon Ton spaces yet. Was just there yesterday and that mall is MAYBE 25-30% full

I don't know if it's just my fond memories or not but, I remember malls from the late 70's feeling more cozy. Maybe it was because of the darker color tones used then and lack of skylights. I've also noticed that malls tend to use open ceilings more now than I remember. It's always given me the impression of something unfinished.

My parents live in Leominster MA and they have a fascinating dying mall called The Mall at Whitney Field. It just lost Macys AND Sears this year and only have a JCP and Burlington as anchors. I’d LOVE to see an episode on that mall. Your videos are some of the best I’ve seen.

I moved away from Leominster a couple of years ago. I was wondering what is going on there. It was pretty affordable as malls go. I wonder what has happened to Greendale and Soloman Pond in Worcester. In 1997 there were Bradley's, Brooks, Caldore, a big KMart, even a Wood Workers Supply. Service Merchandise, Circuit City were where Burlington and Old Navy are now.

I haven't been to this mall since 2009. It's wild to see it like this as well as all of the outer stores closed. Sad to see it without the fountain. I remember going to the mall with my grandparents when it opened, hitting up the auditorium in Boscovs, and then going to the Long John Silvers outside of it to eat. I was at the Indiana mall roughly two years ago and ate pizza at a little joint that had TV's you could put money into lol, that mall was a time capsule for sure.

Nice video. I came of age in this mall, as well as its predecessor, the long-demolished Richland mall. Your description of the aesthetics between this and the 1970’s malls (ie. Richland) was quite a revelation for me. Just something I never gave much thought... After reading Norman Schwartz’s piece on the death of “box malls” in college, and having also lived a few miles from Century III in Pittsburgh around the same time, I doubt these malls will ever see a resurgence.

Also reminds me of the Galleria mall in Buffalo NY. I only have vague memories of that mall as I visited only once on a saturday afternoon in the summer of '91. Wasn't anything to draw me back that the malls far closer to home had, even the vaunted cheaper prices weren't to be found.

I love the background information. It makes these very sad malls come alive. It makes me feel that for just a little bit the mall is happy. They're just more than wood, metal and glass. They're part of society. But one by one they can't come with us. Society is changing especially with the virus. I think malls will be another victim.

The Susquehanna Valley Mall in Selinsgrove PA, is open, it is anchored by Boscovs and has had trouble recently, losing big chains like Books A Million and Victoria Secret due to Co-Vid 19 and due to low business, although in November 2019, 11 small stores opened and H+R Block opened, the mall also has a movie theater next to it. There are about 40 stores left with several out parcels around the mall itself. It has a marble look and is truly amazing in my eyes. Maybe check it out if you haven’t already because it is beautiful.

You need to do the Charleston, West Virginia Towne Center Mall in downtown. It absolutely devastated local small & mom pop shops all over downtown. I remember it was like THE mall for the entire state because they had stores no other mall had in WV. I live out of state now and was actually in Charleston about a year ago and stopped by and it's in such a sorry state. Looking back after being one of those people who were always at the mall, I feel like malls were such a scam. They closed all local stores and replaced them with national store malls that paid low wages and high turnover. Their loyalty was to stock holders, not local communities. Now that they have destroyed main streets, they are going out of business themselves leaving local communities totally screwed. One of the biggest flaws of malls I feel like is you have to purposly drive to them. If you go to Charleston, WV, since the mall is right in the center of downtown, you can see all the (now empty) buildings and shops all around it and what it use to be like before malls. Since city hall, the capital building, and some offices are all around there, you could see how those small stores probably got so much business from people just walking home after work or meeting someone after work at a local restaurant. Malls keep everyone indoors and insulated from the outside. Look up downtown Charleston, WV videos on KZfaq from about the 60s or 70s before the mall was there - you could barely walk on the street! Now it's a ghost town.

I live in johnstown and the mall is an absolutely abysmal shell of what it once was. There's maybe 15 stores in it now. I have friends that had store fronts there for a short time and the rent was absolutely outrageous for this area. Johnstown is an old steel town and when steel and coal left our region so did many well to do people. Businesses simply cannot survive in the mall . Last I heard the mall was up for sherif sale. Which would not suprise me considering the road around the mall looks like main street in downtown Baghdad.

I worked at Sears at the galleria for 10 years. After Cambria county moved to yellow phase the mall is open. There has been a bit of an infusion of life with the old Lone Star steakhouse becoming a Primanti Bros restaurant. Work is also being done on the old Ponderosa to change it to a hibachi restaurant. I love your cinematography. It’s unique and compelling. You put a great deal of thought into these videos. Regarding this mall, the color choice of the common areas shows that the owners never spent 50 cents on the property. It looks so dated. Another nail in the coffin. Perhaps it wouldn’t have made much difference. I’m also sure the Penny’s will be on the list of closing stores. Finally I don’t understand how Boscov’s can stay in business. Time and time again they have exposure to dead or dying malls. Informative video. Great job.

You will need to transfer in Pittsburgh, but you are in PA? Tanglewood has been around since the early 70s, probably Crossroads too. Vallyview showed up later, blocking the extension of the ROA runway and hence any air service/growth potential. The defunct Piedmont Airlines was looking for a host city back in '66 and Roanoke said NIMBY so the went to CHARLOTTE with all those jobs.

If it were my property I would build out the little shops into a shit ton of efficiency and single family apartments. Seems like it could be a really cool place to live if they put a grocery store and some bars and clubs in there too. You could have an all in one place community. At least they would be collecting money in rent from people living there.

Omg. Did you look up Undefeatable because of me? This and Honor & Glory were this guy ("See ya!" I keep forgetting his name. And Cynthia's sister) in the beginning's only movies. Robin Shou, aka Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat movies, was in Honor & Glory. This one was more violent. Mullet dude wasn't in that one.

I remember when that mall was first opened. That mall has went down hill horrible. I travel almost an hour to go to a good mall. That is sad when you only live 30 minutes.

If you want to get to Roanoke, you can get the morning flight or the night flight from your city. It's that bad there.

Whoa that interior does look exactly like the York Galleria’s, it’s kind of odd. I haven’t seen two malls that are almost similar in character, this one’s the first. Super excited about the York Galleria episode; it was on life support, more or less, the last time I visited, I’m very curious how much better or worse it’s become

It seems odd to me to see stores that close, and then reopen, like the Boscovs in White Marsh. Bon-Ton must have thought there was a possibility to reopen due to the signage still being there.

Most likely the signage remained because they owned the parcel.

A rare example of good 90s architecture. I wonder how they resisted putting funky colors and shapes everywhere. 🤔

I don't think I"ve ever seen a mall layout quite like this one. Beauty. By the way, how did you digitally remove Joel and the Bots from the corner of the sponsor movie?

Whilst a lovely fountain/courtyard area is missing, there's a lot to like about that mall's spaciousness and openness and "light" feel -- everything that's missing in cramped malls in expensive-property Australia. Was the color scheme seafoam green when it opened? I would not be surprised if it was, as that would have been very early 90s. When it had all/most of its anchors, that would have been the kind of mall that is my preferred kind of hangout. Lots of space, nice finishes, etc. It's a shame Zamias couldn't hang on to at least the management of their flagship mall, but I do wonder about that decision to not talk to Dillard's.... (???)

Yes, this mall hasn't changed it's color scheme since it opened. It used to have a big fountain right beside the elevator. I honestly even think those hanging Christmas style lights with the American flag have been there forever.

I know Pac Fair well. And inside, my perception is that it still feels dark and still suffers from "space crunch" in its effort to pack as much shopping for tourists into its space as possible. Its centre court being outside gives it a different feel than classic American malls. The mall that Pac Fair most reminds me of is actually Jungceylon Centre in Phuket/Patong, Thailand, because of its somewhat tourist orientation, mixed indoor/outdoor feel, etc! (Now that you mention it, though, MAYBE Robina Town Centre has KIND OF a moderately-sized local American mall vibe... a seemingly non-space-constrained suburban hangout one can sit in and work on one's computer, with breaks for browsing the week's sales, tea, and snacking, and long vistas to stretch one's eyes, without feeling that one is out of place.)

@@jaeves007 Thanks for the info on decor. Oh, sigh... "used to have".... :-( So many shopping centres "used to have" cool features that SOMEONE thought they could improve on by removing them. :-( Does anyone know what's behind the scourge of fountain/art removals? Lower maintenance costs?
