We create pottery plaster slabs to dry the clay down. Also found it best to get the clay smooth and creamy before adding the colorants

I set aside trimmings until dry and store them in a plastic container. I place mason stain in a bowl and add a small amount of water to help dissolve it-- then add trimmings and mix. I allow it to stiffen up and wedge. I can also control the color value by adding more clay. If you are in production and need to repeat exact color, you'll have to measure as Jon did in his video. Good luck mud-sters!

You're the OG youtube potter. I love your enthusiasm plus its cool to see another entrepreneur doing so well. I have watched a lot of your glazing videos to learn about those combos.

This way is so much easier than adding mason stain to fresh clay! I've started doing this too. I wedge my slightly too wet clay/reclaim on a cement board and it absorbs enough to make it more workable. I also dry my reclaim on cement board, works great!

In a way that's what make clay so attractive as a material to create with, it's pretty much infinitely recyclable (before it gets fired I guess) so you don't end up having to throw away all your leftover slip and shavings and so on.

I think it’s the best way I have seen and not done yet but by comparison less work!

I get that it’s easier to combine when wet - but to be reproducible, you want to weigh dry against dry. Otherwise you need to know the hydration of the slip, which is tough.

I see you have changed your work table surface from the birch plywood surface. What did you change to? Cement board like Hardie backer board is a popular choice among potters.

Adding 10g of stain to 100g clay is not 10% stain. The final weight is 110g. That's 9.09% stain. 11.11g of stain and 100g of clay is 10% stain and 90% clay.
